Flame In The Grate: The Kullus Character In A Selection Of Harold Pinter's Early Works, Brian Charles Nudelman Jan 2000

Flame In The Grate: The Kullus Character In A Selection Of Harold Pinter's Early Works, Brian Charles Nudelman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Between the years 1949 and 1955, Harold Pinter was writing not plays, but poems and prose. Three works written during this period are "Kullus," "The Task," and "The Examination." Not only do these works follow chronologically, but also the intricate relationship between the narrator and Kullus established within each seems to continually refer back to a previous work. When read together, with "The Task" central, the three works form a continuing narrative of conflict and personal struggle, and for each to be fully appreciated and understood, one needs that knowledge gained from seeing the progression in relationship that is developed …

Forecasting Foreign Exchange Rates Using Neural Networks, Amit H. Talati Jan 2000

Forecasting Foreign Exchange Rates Using Neural Networks, Amit H. Talati

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Time series is a phenomena which appears in the financial world in various forms. One of the objectives of time series is to forecast the future based on the past. The goal of this thesis is to use foreign exchange time series, and predict its future values and trends using neural networks. The thesis covers background work in this area and discusses the results obtained by other researchers. A neural network is then developed to predict the future values of the USD/GBP and USD/DEM exchange rates. Both single-step and iterated multi-step predictions are considered. The performance of neural networks strongly …

Financial Market Integration And Cross-Border Spillover Effects In Europe, Jorg. Bley Jan 2000

Financial Market Integration And Cross-Border Spillover Effects In Europe, Jorg. Bley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The ongoing political, legal, and economic harmonization within the European Union has lead to a higher degree of integration of national financial markets. The introduction of the single European currency, the euro, eliminated a traditional source of risk to international portfolio investors. In light of these developments, Part I of the empirical analysis had the following objectives: (1) to determine the relative importance of country, sector, and industry factors in explaining individual company's stock return behavior in the wake of the formation of the European Union, (2) to identify the multiple factor model, consisting of country and/or sector and/or industry …

Group-Level Consequences Of Communication About Physical Appearance, Donna Jill Schwartz Jan 2000

Group-Level Consequences Of Communication About Physical Appearance, Donna Jill Schwartz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Recent research has looked at sociocultural standards and social comparison to explain body image disturbances (Thompson, 1996). This study uses Latane's Dynamic Social Impact Theory to explore the emergence of group level consequences of discussing these societal standards of physical appearance. It was hypothesized that there would be more clustering, consolidation, correlation and continued diversity amongst the participants opinions by the end of the five week discussion. These hypotheses were not supported by measures of clustering, consolidation, correlation and continued diversity. These results indicate that Dynamic Social Impact Theory alone may not be useful for studying the consequence of group …

The e+-jet invariant mass spectrum produced in the reaction e+p → e+ X has been studied at a center-of-mass energy of 300 GeV. The data were collected using the ZEUS detector operating at the HERA collider, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 47.7 pb-1. The observed mass spectrum is in good agreement with Standard Model expectations up to an e+-jet mass of 210 GeV. Above this mass, some excess is seen. The angular distribution of these events is typical of high-Q2 neutral current events and does not give convincing evidence for the presence of a narrow scalar or vector …

In a search for signatures of physics processes beyond the Standard Model, various eeqq vector contact-interaction hypotheses have been tested using the high-Q2 deep inelastic neutral-current e+p scattering data collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 47.7pb-1 of e+p interactions at 300 GeV center-of-mass energy. No significant evidence of a contact-interaction signal has been found. Limits at the 95% confidence level are set on the contact-interaction amplitudes. The effective mass scales Λ corresponding to these limits range from 1.7 TeV to 5 TeV for the contact-interaction scenarios considered.

The production of D*± (2010) mesons in deep inelastic scattering has been measured in the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 37 pb-1. The decay channels D*+ → D0π+ (+c.c.), with D0 → K-π+ or D0 → K-π-π+π+, have been used to identify the D mesons. The e+p cross section for inclusive D*± production with 1 < Q2 < 600 GeV2 and 0.02 < y < 0.7 is 8.31±0.31(stat.)+0.30-0.50 (syst.) nb in the kinematic region 1.5 < pT(D*±) < 15 GeV and \η(D*±)\ < 1.5. Differential cross sections are consistent with a next-to-leading-order perturbative-QCD calculation when using charm-fragmentation models which take into account the interaction of the charm quark with the proton remnant. The observed cross section is extrapolated to the full kinematic region in pT(D*±) and η(D*±) in order to determine the charm contribution, Fcc̄2 (x, Q2), to the proton structure function. The ratio Fcc̄2/F2 rises from ≃10% at Q2 ≃ 1.8GeV2 to ≃30% at Q2 ≃130GeV2 for x values in the range 10-4 to 10-3.

Correlations between charged particles in deep inelastic e+ p scattering have been studied in the Breit frame with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 6.4pb-1. Short-range correlations are analysed in terms of the angular separation between current-region particles within a cone centred around the virtual photon axis. Long-range correlations between the current and target regions have also been measured. The data support predictions for the scaling behaviour of the angular correlations at high Q2 and for anti-correlations between the current and target regions over a large range in Q2 and in the Bjorken scaling variable x. …

The e+p charged-current deep inelastic scattering cross sections, dσ/dQ2 for Q2 between 200 and 60000 GeV2, and dσ/dx and dσ/dy for Q2 > 200 GeV2, have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA. A data sample of 47.7 pb-1, collected at a center-of-mass energy of 300 GeV, has been used. The double-differential cross-section dσ/dQ2 falls by a factor of about 50000 as Q2 increases from 280 to 30000 GeV2. The double differential cross section d2σ/dxdQ2 has also been measured. A comparison between the data and Standard Model (SM) predictions shows that contributions from antiquarks (ū and c̄) and quarks (d …

Predicting Turnover And Retention In Nursing Home Administrators: Management And Policy Implications, Douglas A. Singh, Robert C. Schwab Jan 2000

Predicting Turnover And Retention In Nursing Home Administrators: Management And Policy Implications, Douglas A. Singh, Robert C. Schwab

Faculty Publications

Administrator turnover and its impact on the quality of patient care are important concerns in the nursing home industry. This study evaluates a model to determine which factors, attitudes, and personal characteristics can predict tenure. Responses to a survey from 290 nursing home administrators (NHAs) who furnished data on their previous positions were analyzed using logistic regression methods. The extracted model correlates tenure with the administrator's past patterns of stability, community attachment, organizational commitment, and facility performance. The model is particularly effective (85% accuracy) in flagging NHAs who are likely to depart within their first 3 years of employment. Implications …

Sex & Surveillance: Gender, Privacy & The Sexualization Of Power In Prison, Teresa A. Miller Jan 2000

Sex & Surveillance: Gender, Privacy & The Sexualization Of Power In Prison, Teresa A. Miller

Journal Articles

In prison, surveillance is power and power is sexualized. Sex and surveillance, therefore, are profoundly linked. Whereas numerous penal scholars from Bentham to Foucault have theorized the force inherent in the visual monitoring of prisoners, the sexualization of power and the relationship between sex and surveillance is more academically obscure. This article criticizes the failure of federal courts to consider the strong and complex relationship between sex and surveillance in analyzing the constitutionality of prison searches, specifically, cross-gender searches.

The analysis proceeds in four parts. Part One introduces the issues posed by sex and surveillance. Part Two describes the sexually …

Framed: Utilitarianism And Punishment Of The Innocent, Guyora Binder, Nicholas J. Smith Jan 2000

Framed: Utilitarianism And Punishment Of The Innocent, Guyora Binder, Nicholas J. Smith

Journal Articles

This paper is a defense of utilitarian penology, against the familiar retributivist charge that it promotes framing the innocent, and other charges similarly depending on the notion that utilitarianism encourages officials to deceive the public. Our defense proceeds from the striking fact that utilitarianism's critics do not cite textual evidence that the originators of utilitarian penology in fact endorsed punishing the innocent or deceiving the public. Instead, critics claim that these unsavory policies follow logically from the premises of utilitarianism. Our argument, in brief, is that the charge of framing the innocent rests on a misunderstanding of utilitarian penology. We …

Government Lawyers, Robert E. Rodes

Journal Articles

I am grateful to Professor Lee for the opportunity to comment on this fine set of papers regarding the ethical obligations of government lawyers. These papers shed light on many interesting aspects of serving the government. Professors Shaffer and Lee explore the peculiar challenges to integrity that a lawyer experiences when he has a client who can chop his head off. The challenges are less today, but a lawyer with large student loans to pay may not realize that they are. Professor Hazard points out that government lawyers are government employees with the responsibilities that government employment entails. Professor Green …

Choosing The Lesser Evil: Comments On Besharov's "Child Abuse Realities", Margaret F. Brinig

Journal Articles

Determining the degree of state intervention into intra-family decision making requires an unhappy choice between allowing abuse to continue or interfering with some families that would be better left alone. Mr. Besharov introduces the possible harms associated with the increased involvement of the state but fails to fully comprehend the circumstances that necessitate such involvement. Evils bracket the phenomenon discussed in Mr. Besharov's paper and this one. The difference in our approach lies in the choice we think is the lesser evil of the two, not that we think that either the harms associated with state involvement or the risk …

A Tribute To A Friend And Colleague: Frank Beytagh, Fernand N. Dutile

Journal Articles

I am delighted to say a few words on this wonderful occasion honoring Professor Francis X. Beytagh. He and I became colleagues at Notre Dame in 1971. In twenty-nine years of friendship, Frank and Diane have shared with Brigid and me much joy—and significant sadness. Today's ceremony brims with joy, and Brigid and I are so pleased that we could be here to share joy yet again with Frank and Diane.

His intellectual depth and practical wisdom find consistent expression through his indefatigable devotion to mission. I have known many people with some of these qualities, but it is rare …

Consortia Vs Reform: Creating Congruence, Margaret Landesman, Johann Van Reenen

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

The inability of research libraries to offer the collections their users desire has become more pronounced each year. In response, libraries have moved in two directions: the rapidly growing consortial movement and the movement to advocate and support reforms in scholarly communication. However, if libraries do not pay careful attention, these two directions may, at least partially, cancel one another out.
