A Three-Phase Constitutive Model For Macrobrittle Fatigue Damage Of Composites., Gasser Farouk Abdelal
A Three-Phase Constitutive Model For Macrobrittle Fatigue Damage Of Composites., Gasser Farouk Abdelal
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Failure in materials occurs as a result of damage accumulation. Damage in composite material can be studied applying the continuum approach or the micromechanical approach. The continuum approach treats the composite material as transversely isotropic medium. In this approach, there is no distinction between the fiber and the matrix. The micromechanical approach studies the different damage mechanisms such as, fiber damage, fiber/matrix debonding, and matrix cracking. The research in this dissertation is focused on applying the micromechanical approach. A micromechanical macrobrittle damage (damage under monotonic load) model is developed and compared with available experimental data. Then an anisotropic fatigue damage …
Life On Campus Really Ain't So Bad, Avern Cohn
Life On Campus Really Ain't So Bad, Avern Cohn
Michigan Law Review
The Shadow University is a highly tendentious account of Alan Charles Kors and Harvey A. Silverglate's view of academic and student life in America's colleges and universities over the last twenty years. Kors and Silverglate see these colleges and universities turning from promoting personal and academic freedom to suppressing open expression and denying basic liberties to students and faculty alike. To make their point, they have scoured college and university campuses from coast to coast to find incidents involving student speech code violations, as well as student and faculty discipline and misbehavior proceedings. They also examine multicultural and diversity programs …

Rethinking Relationship-Specific Investments: Subcontracting In The Japanese Automobile Industry, Yoshiro Miwa, J. Mark Ramseyer
Michigan Law Review
Longer ago than either of us cares to remember, one of us attended junior high in Tokyo. On Saturdays, he worked at a printed circuit factory. Or maybe "factory" makes it all sound too grand. A small building in back of a gas station, it had three or four punch presses. The "president" supervised matters (though he actually spent more time hanging out at the gas station), together with a sidekick who did assorted odd jobs besides. Several middle-aged women with no apparent technical education or skill ran the presses. The junior high kid spent his time trimming the sheets …

I, too, have a work-related anecdote from my youth to relate. During one summer break from college, I had a job on the night shift in the canning plant of a Coca-Cola bottling franchisee in my hometown in New Hampshire. The process of canning tonic (known as "soda" outside of New England) consisted of three stages, beginning with the fabrication of cans in a room at one end of the building and concluding with the filling and sealing operations in a room at the other end. In between, workers in a third room inspected cans as they arrived by conveyor …
Exploring The Battle Of The Forms In Action, Daniel Keating
Exploring The Battle Of The Forms In Action, Daniel Keating
Michigan Law Review
Like many commercial law professors, I have long been fascinated with the workings of the Uniform Commercial Code's section 2-207, the "battle of the forms" provision. There are two features of that section, one internal and one external, that make it such an intriguing statute to ponder. The internal source of fascination with section 2-207 is that it provides a classic model for teaching students about the intricacies of statutory construction. There is probably no other provision within U.C.C. Article 2 that provides more confusion to law students and more challenge to the instructor than does section 2-207. There is …

The Sound Of One Form Battling: Comments On Daniel Keating's 'Exploring The Battle Of The Forms In Action', Richard Craswell
Michigan Law Review
Daniel Keating has provided a thoughtful and useful study of the way that businesses form contracts. In particular, he has given us a good deal of data concerning the problem known as the "battle of the forms." Commercial lawyers have, of course, been wrangling over this problem for decades, so it is no small accomplishment to be able to offer a useful contribution. In Part I below, I describe more precisely just what Keating's data does and does not illuminate. Parts II and III then focus on a particular contracting practice that Keating has identified: the practice of getting both …

A Risk Assessment Of Nursing Personnel Injuries Occurring While Lifting, Transferring Or Repositioning Nursing Home Residents., James T. Culligan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The primary objective of this research thesis was to identify the root causal factors associated with lost time injuries occurring among nursing personnel in long term care facilities. The critical elements assessed and evaluated include: length of service; time of day injury occurred; task being completed when injury occurred; similar incidents in the past (accident repeaters); type of shift on which injury occurred; number of hours worked the day injury occurred; impact of company policy; availability of mechanical lifts; training on how and when to use mechanical lifts; exercise; stretching; training on safe lifting techniques or good body mechanics; gait …

Sand Casting Benchmarking: Questionnaire Development, Analysis And Participant Evaluation., Kimberly Hawkins Spangler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research focused on obtaining information on sand casting practices and providing participants in the research with feedback. It also focused on determining if any significant relationships existed among the data. A detailed questionnaire, containing 96 questions, was developed and sent to sand casters. Fifty sand casters participated in the benchmarking study during late 1995 and early 1996. The data were analyzed to provide the participants with a personalized evaluation indicating how they compared with other sand casters pouring the same primary type of metal. The data were further analyzed using correlations and non-parametric statistical tests to determine if any …
The Distribution Of Federal Grants In Appalachia: The Effects Of Race., Steven Ray Gregory
The Distribution Of Federal Grants In Appalachia: The Effects Of Race., Steven Ray Gregory
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
African Americans are an economically and socially oppressed group both currently and historically within the American South and Appalachian region. They experience socioeconomic barriers at local and national levels. Even so, within Appalachian counties, populations with greater percentages of African Americans receive greater per capita federal grant spending. Moreover, southern Appalachian counties including counties in the Black Belt region show the most dramatic increases in federal grants. Still, within Appalachian counties receiving increased federal grants, unemployment rates are not affected. Further, metropolitan counties are not benefitting from increased federal grant spending. Consequently, these counties are experiencing economic growth with little …

Partitioning Of Large Hdl Asic Designs Into Multiple Fpga Devices For Prototyping And Verification, Nilesh V Dhavlikar
Partitioning Of Large Hdl Asic Designs Into Multiple Fpga Devices For Prototyping And Verification, Nilesh V Dhavlikar
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The ASIC (Application specific Integrated Circuit) designs grow continuously bigger and bigger. This causes dramatic increase in the simulation run time. It is very hard to simulate these designs because the simulation time has risen from hours to days and weeks. Hardware Embedded Simulation (HES) is a technology that facilitates incremental design verification of ASICs. The FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays) can play an important role in ASIC design cycle. But it is not possible to fit an entire ASIC design into a single FPGA device. This problem can be solved by partitioning the given design into multiple small size …
The Dynamics Of Faith-Based Organizations And Their Effects On Educational Standardization, Patricia Gail Haase
The Dynamics Of Faith-Based Organizations And Their Effects On Educational Standardization, Patricia Gail Haase
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Remnants of Christian tradition exist in American culture although we live in a pluralistic society. Faith-based schools seek to restore elements of the Christian tradition, believing those values essential for their children. Some in the greater community look to such schools for elements and practices to translate and apply into the greater systems; Private faith-based education is considered overall successful, but there are problems that warrant discussion. Most of the dynamics are typical of all organizations, but perhaps not expected because of the moral representation. Others dynamics are unique or exaggerated in faith-based organizations; Non-profit organizations, including faith-based, exist to …

Be An American Reconstructioneer Of Culture, John Sikula
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
In this presentation the author argues that improvement in schooling and teacher education in the United States will be successful to the extent that educators establish via research and practice and make known to the public and to budget controlling authorities the clear relationships which exist between investment in education and productive citizenship. Until educators become more proactive, demanding, political, and willing to serve as American Reconstructioneers of Culture (ARCs), our educational institutions will continue to drift with a tide of mediocrity as resources flow to other more viable and vocal areas.

The Evolution Of Hot Spots In The U.S. Biotechnology Industry, Timothy B. Folta, Yoon-Suk Baik
Purdue CIBER Working Papers
This study empirically tests Pouder & St. John's propositions (1996) on the evolutions of geographic clusters, in the context of the U.S. biotechnology industry. We find that during the origination period of the cluster evolution clustered biotechnology firms exhibit higher cost economies and legitimacy in obtaining resources than non-clustered competitors. While, after the early period, such clustered firms' advantage in resource access and innovations are statistically significantly declining. These findings evidence the decline of positive net benefits from geographic clustering over time. Given the inconsistent empirical results in the literature on whether there are positive net benefits to geographically clustered …
