Black And White Undergraduate Resident University Students' Stages Of Intercultural Sensitivity And Racial Identity At Indiana State University, Kenneth Darryl Coopwood Jan 2000

Black And White Undergraduate Resident University Students' Stages Of Intercultural Sensitivity And Racial Identity At Indiana State University, Kenneth Darryl Coopwood

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The summary report of the 1996 climate study conducted at Indiana State University revealed that the campus could appropriately be termed chilly”. The study further revealed that only 54% of Black students and 74.9% of White students would recommend the university to another potential student. The ability to survive in chilly” climates has many determinants rooted in students' ability to identify with self (Tatum, 1997). However, since there were no or inaccurate references to student present identities, retention-based programmatic developments thought to be central to student perceptions of campus life were perceived to be in vain. The use of cognitive …

Improvement Of Reconciliation For Quantum Key Distribution, Keath Chen Jan 2000

Improvement Of Reconciliation For Quantum Key Distribution, Keath Chen

Theses

Quantum Key Distribution is meant to be an ultimate computer security system that will not need upgrade/overhaul from time to time. QKD allows the generation of long key length on demand. QKD, coupled with the unconditional secure "one-time pad" encryption system, will be unbreakable for eavesdropper with infinite resources. Numerous experimental QKD prototypes have demonstrated that QKD is likely to be a reality before quantum computer. One of the steps in a Quantum Key Distribution protocol is to remove the transmission errors from quantum communication, which typically has a high error rate (one percent or higher). An interactive error control …

Internet Protocol Version 6 And The Future Of Home Networking, Laurie Blumsack Jan 2000

Internet Protocol Version 6 And The Future Of Home Networking, Laurie Blumsack

Theses

Home networking will be more of a necessity in the future than it is today. The homes of the future will make our lives easier in many ways. As microprocessors become less expensive and require less power they will be implanted into many of the common household items used everyday. Appliances and components will evolve into smart devices that communicate with each other. Connecting these devices will become more important as devices incorporate new technologies. It will be necessary to build a network that can handle the needs of this type of computing environment. The home networks of the future …

Traditional Classroom Versus Distance Learning Approaches In Providing Eduactaion For Students At The College Of Applied Science And Technology At Rit, Ryan Griske Jan 2000

Traditional Classroom Versus Distance Learning Approaches In Providing Eduactaion For Students At The College Of Applied Science And Technology At Rit, Ryan Griske

Theses

This thesis discusses the current controversial issue of traditional classroom vs. distance learning approaches in higher education institutions using a case study in the College of Applied Science and Technology at RIT. The most important question addressed in the thesis is, "Are distance learning methods effective for addressing university-level learning goals?" (Kathleen Davey, 1999, p. 45). There are currently many disputes between educational researchers on this issue. The first four chapters cover details of the proposal stage as previously approved by the Thesis Committee. Chapter One briefly introduces this issue and several important terms used throughout the thesis (e.g., distance …

Variations In Mediation: How - And Why - Legal Mediators Change Styles In The Course Of A Case, Dwight Golann Jan 2000

Variations In Mediation: How - And Why - Legal Mediators Change Styles In The Course Of A Case, Dwight Golann

Journal of Dispute Resolution

I will seek to show in this article that professional legal mediators in fact use a variety of styles, and that they change their approach constantly during a single mediation, even within a single meeting with a disputant. I will argue that these stylistic changes are the norm rather than the exception in the mediation of civil legal disputes and that the use of evaluative techniques is also frequent, even among those mediators who favor a broad, facilitative approach. Finally, I will describe the contrasting styles that the filmed mediators used in the same dispute and argue that these variations …

Turning The Ship Of State, Jeffrey M. Senger Jan 2000

Turning The Ship Of State, Jeffrey M. Senger

Journal of Dispute Resolution

In his thoughtful article on the future of ADR, Professor Frank Sander notes, "On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I think we've made amazing progress. On Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, ADR seems more like a grain of sand on the adversary system beach."' In the federal government, I believe things are somewhat better than that. Perhaps five days out of seven I am impressed with the progress of the government in implementing ADR, particularly in the last ten years, which I will describe below. The other two days, like Professor Sander, I become more discouraged as we run into one of …

Urine Trouble! Extending Constitutionality To Mandatory Suspicionless Drug Testing Of Students In Extracurricular Activities, James M. Mccray Jan 2000

Urine Trouble! Extending Constitutionality To Mandatory Suspicionless Drug Testing Of Students In Extracurricular Activities, James M. Mccray

Vanderbilt Law Review

The United States makes clear its reverence for education by demanding that its children attend school.' What is less clear, how- ever, is the nation's dedication to each student's constitutional rights. From the earliest days of the common law, public school students have lacked fundamental rights, even the right of liberty in its narrowest sense.' Although public students retain certain constitutional rights,' the public school system maintains an elevated power over its students." This power is like that of a parent,' including the duty to "inculcate the habits and manners of civility" into its students.' The public school's control over …

Ce-Qual-W2 Version 3: Hydrodynamic And Water Quality River Basin Modeling, Scott A. Wells Jan 2000

Ce-Qual-W2 Version 3: Hydrodynamic And Water Quality River Basin Modeling, Scott A. Wells

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

CE-QUAL-W2 is a two-dimensional (longitudinal-vertical) water quality and hydrodynamic computer simulation model that was originally developed for deep, long, and narrow waterbodies. The current model, Version 2, has been used in over 200 river, reservoir/lake, and estuary applications throughout the U.S. and abroad. Version 2, though, cannot accommodate systems that have a significant sloping water surface since the vertical coordinate system is aligned with gravity and vertical accelerations are neglected. The governing equations for CE-QUAL-W2 were re-derived so that it could be applied to entire river basins including river-estuary, lake-river, and reservoir-river systems with channel slopes. This re-derivation is one …

Auto-Inhibition Of Ets-1 Is Counteracted By Dna Binding Cooperativity With Core-Binding Factor Α2, Tamara L. Goetz, Ting-Lei Gu, Nancy A. Speck, Barbara J. Graves Jan 2000

Auto-Inhibition Of Ets-1 Is Counteracted By Dna Binding Cooperativity With Core-Binding Factor Α2, Tamara L. Goetz, Ting-Lei Gu, Nancy A. Speck, Barbara J. Graves

Dartmouth Scholarship

Auto-inhibition is a common transcriptional control mechanism that is well characterized in the regulatory transcription factor Ets-1. Autoinhibition of Ets-1 DNA binding works through an inhibitory module that exists in two conformations. DNA binding requires a change in the inhibitory module from the packed to disrupted conformation. This structural switch provides a mechanism to tightly regulate Ets-1 DNA binding. We report that the Ets-1 partner protein core-binding factor α2 (CBFα2; also known as AML1 or PEBP2) stimulates Ets-1 DNA binding and counteracts auto-inhibition. Support for this conclusion came from three observations. First, the level of cooperative DNA binding (10-fold) was …

Survey Of Aquatic Plants In Corps Of Engineers Reservoirs, Kimberly D. Walker, Mark D. Sytsma Jan 2000

Survey Of Aquatic Plants In Corps Of Engineers Reservoirs, Kimberly D. Walker, Mark D. Sytsma

Center for Lakes and Reservoirs Publications and Presentations

A survey of aquatic plants in a selected Corps of Engineers reservoirs in Oregon was conducted. Cottage Grove, Dorena, Fern Ridge, Dexter and Willow Creek Reservoirs contained abundant aquatic plants. Potamogeton pectinatus and Potamogeton epihydrous were the most common native plant species. Myriophyllum aquaticum and Potamogeton crispus were the most widespread nonnative plants. Species richness in the reservoirs was correlated with trophic status and basin morphology. Shallow reservoirs that included extensive areas of nutrient-rich sediments that were historic flood plain soils supported the greatest biomass and number of species. Mesotrophic reservoirs had lower species diversity. Oligotrophic reservoirs with steep basin …

Mobile Agents: Motivations And State-Of-The-Art Systems, Robert S. Gray, George Cybenko, David Kotz, Daniela Rus

Dartmouth Scholarship

A mobile agent is an executing program that can migrate, at times of its own choosing, from machine to machine in a heterogeneous network. On each machine, the agent interacts with stationary service agents and other resources to accomplish its task. In this chapter, we first make the case for mobile agents, discussing six strengths of mobile agents and the applications that benefit from these strengths. Although none of these strengths are unique to mobile agents, no competing technique shares all six. In other words, a mobile-agent system provides a single general framework in which a wide range of distributed …

Important Factors In The Development Of Nascar, Kathleen Munger, David L. Groves

Visions in Leisure and Business

This study investigated the success of the National Association of Stock Car Automobile Racing (NASCAR). An examination and analysis of history as related to success provided a framework to understand the sport. Content experts in the motor sport field (identified through leadership identification) validated previously established NASCAR categories through a review process. Critical incident interviews were conducted to identify and prioritize the most important identified elements within these categories with the results of the interviews being compiled in a typology format. The typology was then reviewed by the Content experts for validation and modification of the framework. The study identified …

NASCAR as a sport has the most loyal fans. The purpose of this project was to identify potential variables that explain such loyalty. None of the coefficient of determination (r2) were very strong. Those variables that show the most promise for characterizing the fans were those variables related to the experiential base of NASCAR.

S C O R P State Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan Nebraska Action Program Jan 2000

S C O R P State Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan Nebraska Action Program

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications

Over a third of nonresidents who visit Nebraska in the summer months go to attractions and events. For each attraction or event visited, they spend an average of a halfday longer stay in Nebraska and spend an additional $64, according to data from Nebraska's OED. Outdoor recreation will likely continue to increase with active families, climbing incomes, and shorter work weeks. However, Nebraskans may spend more on long weekends and vacations closer to home in coming years if fuel prices keep climbing. If Nebraska is to meet existing and expected recreation and tourism demands, the long-range statewide forecasts to meet …
