High Speed Access: Micro Radio, Action, And Activism On The Internet, Ted M. Coopman
Faculty Publications
During the spring and summer of 1999, the Low Power Radio Service Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) by the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) recently drew a record number of responses. Several thousand people from all over the country participated in what has traditionally been the purview of major corporations and institutions, including 1120 individuals who signed the Micro Radio Empowerment Coalition comments. This paper examines that response and its implications for the micro radio and other activist movements. The Internet played an important role not only in filing responses, but in drafting and signing responses as well. For example, the …

When mediators try to resolve a controversy by providing their analysis of the legal – or other – merits, they are providing the service that judges, arbitrators and neutral experts provide. In essence, such endeavors use the neutral’s judgment, award or opinion to determine or jump-start a resolution. This article urges that this add-on activity to mediation should be called by its proper name. The essay highlights the advantages of calling "mediation plus evaluation" a mixed process and discusses the advantages of having an eclectic and diverse mix of processes from which parties and counsel can choose to promote party …

The Molecular Mechanism Of Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Regulation By Dietary Factors In Intact Animals., Batoul Amir-Ahmady
The Molecular Mechanism Of Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Regulation By Dietary Factors In Intact Animals., Batoul Amir-Ahmady
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The expression of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) gene is stimulated by a high-carbohydrate diet and it is inhibited by the addition of polyunsaturated fat to the high-carbohydrate diet. G6PD expression is regulated by a posttranscriptional mechanism in the nucleus. In this regard, changes in the amount of G6PD mRNA in the cytoplasm are preceded by similar changes in the amount of nuclear precursor mRNA (pre-mRNA) in the absence of changes in transcriptional activity of the gene. Some components of the transcription and pre-mRNA processing machinery as well as pre-mRNA itself are associated with the insoluble portion of the nucleus known as …
The Natural Rate Of Unemployment, Its Estimation, And Evaluation Of Its Estimators., Victor Vyron Claar
The Natural Rate Of Unemployment, Its Estimation, And Evaluation Of Its Estimators., Victor Vyron Claar
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation estimates a time series of the natural rate of unemployment via competing methods, and evaluates such methods both within sample and for forecasting purposes. The methods used include the Kalman and Hodrick-Prescott filters. Evaluation proceeds along two lines. First, a Phillips curve is used in order to assess how well deviations of actual inflation from expected inflation are explained by deviations of the actual unemployment rate from estimated natural rates within a given sample period. The evaluative criterion is the overall fit of each regression. The analysis indicates that the in-sample fit of the Phillips curve changes little …
Preservice Teachers’ Beliefs About Teaching And Learning, Helga M. Gudenschwager
Preservice Teachers’ Beliefs About Teaching And Learning, Helga M. Gudenschwager
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Research shows that knowing what preservice teachers believe about teaching and learning helps their instructors to reinforce those beliefs that are compatible with current approaches in education and challenge those that promote the perpetuation of antiquated and ineffective teaching practices. Four main research questions guided this study: 1. To what extent the beliefs expressed by participants aligned with traditional or constructivist perspectives? 2. Do elementary and secondary majors differ in terms of their preference for practices aligned with these perspectives? 3. Do elementary and secondary majors differ in terms of their beliefs about the goals of education and effective strategies …
