Differences In Attitude Between Black And White Women Towards Domestic Violence, Paula Ellis

Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the similarities and/or differences between African American and White women in their level of acceptance and personal experience regarding domestic violence. This study compared 62 women, 31 African American and 31 White women, ages ranging from 18 to over 58, employed at an area hospital in St. Louis. The study addressed their experiences and attitudes toward domestic violence. The data was analyzed through descriptive statistical comparisons between the two groups, using the Chi-Square procedure. The results of the study indicate no significant difference in the level of acceptance of violence between the …

Practice, Policy, And Pedagogy In A Mandatory Environmental Law Course, Michael Allan Wolf, Joel B. Eisen Jan 2000

Practice, Policy, And Pedagogy In A Mandatory Environmental Law Course, Michael Allan Wolf, Joel B. Eisen

Law Faculty Publications

All students at the University of Richmond School of Law are required to complete a first-year course in Environmental Law, as an introduction to the strategies and technicalities of statutory and regulatory regimes. This requirement poses special pedagogical challenges for the instructors. How, for example, is the class to address pollution questions regarding diverse media? Which of the many federal and nonfederal statutory provisions deserve the most (and least attention)? How does the instructor hold the attention of, and gain the most effective work product from, students whose major interests lie outside the area of Environmental Law? What is the …

Reflections On Being A Law School Dean In An Interconnected World, Claudio Grossman Jan 2000

Reflections On Being A Law School Dean In An Interconnected World, Claudio Grossman

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

After reaching a certain level of momentum, a law school can pretty much run itself. Even in the absence of leadership, the law school will continue to function as it has in the past; students will come each year, and classes will be held. A sort of inertia results, in which nothing changes; things continue as they always have. Inertia is a dangerous thing in education, and it is the responsibility of the law school's dean to prevent it. A law school dean is charged with contributing to the development of a vision that will guide the law school in …

The Legacy Of Geographical Morality And Colonialism: A Historical Assessment Of The Current Crusade Against Corruption, Padideh Ala'i

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

This Article examines the legacy of the rule of geographical morality - that is the norm by which a citizen of the country in the North may engage in acts of corruption in any country in the South, including bribery and extortion, without the attachment of any moral condemnation to those acts. Part I of the Article begins by reviewing the impeachment trial of Warren Hastings, who served as Governor General of the Bengal from 1772-1785, on charges of bribery and corruption. It was during that impeachment proceeding when the words "principles of geographical morality" were used by, the prosectuor, …

Guest Editor's Introduction To The Symposium: War And The United States Military, Kenneth Anderson Jan 2000

Guest Editor's Introduction To The Symposium: War And The United States Military, Kenneth Anderson

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Millennia come and millennia go, and the fact of war remains unchanged. People still fight for territory, the land of their fathers, Lebensraum, control of the seas, gold, silver and diamonds, oil, water, pillage and the spoils of war, resources of all kinds, the glorification of leaders, gods of many faiths, politics, ideology, conquest, the establishment, peace and stability of empires, the right to be left alone, and sometimes, so we are told, justice, resistance to aggression, and the preservation of peace. Measured in millennial time, very little about war has changed, and, further, nothing distinguished the passage from 1999 …

The Influence Of Particle Size On Sand-Pack Properties And Drying Profile., Chandrashekmar S. Gothoskar Jan 2000

The Influence Of Particle Size On Sand-Pack Properties And Drying Profile., Chandrashekmar S. Gothoskar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The problem of underground contamination including contamination of potable water aquifers is more serious now than ever. Stringent pollution control laws as well as concern for the environment has given birth to the technology for remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater. The Research conducted thus has proposed a way to contain the contamination from underground storage tanks from spreading and travelling downwards using the principles of desiccation in in-situ formations. The desiccant barrier proposed here is the circulating air barrier (CAB) which utilizes the injection of dry gas or air to create an ultra dry zone in situ. Thus the …

The Influence Of Friendship, Friendship Quality, And Gender On Collaborative Processes And Performance., Lisa Marie Swenson Jan 2000

The Influence Of Friendship, Friendship Quality, And Gender On Collaborative Processes And Performance., Lisa Marie Swenson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Characteristics of peer collaborators (gender) and the collaborative context (friendship, friendship quality, same-gender peer) may affect task processes and performance. Forty six same-gender adolescent dyads (26 girl dyads, 20 boy dyads; mean age = 15.69 yrs) collaborated on a problem-solving task that involved planning a route around a hypothetical town to obtain various items. Goals for and perceptions of collaboration were assessed as an index of collaborative processes. Performance was assessed through route length, time to complete the task, total cost, and errors on the task. Contrary to predictions, collaborating with a friend, though not detrimental to performance, did not …

Attribution: A Political Psychology Perspective On The Democratic Peace., Edward Michael Goldcamp Jan 2000

Attribution: A Political Psychology Perspective On The Democratic Peace., Edward Michael Goldcamp

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Currently there appears to be irrefutable evidence of the existence of a democratic peace. The concept of pacific interaction between democratic nations has become a virtual law in the study of Political Science. Many explanations exist, generally following one of two tracts. There are both structural and normative explanations. The premise of this dissertation is that neither current set of explanations is adequate. Therefore, it is necessary to pursue a third type of explanatory theory. This study examines the role of culture and attribution in foreign policy. The notion of polity similarity is replaced with cultural similarity. I examine the …

The Effects Of Social Support On Men's Exercise-Related Cardiovascular Reactivity., Daniel Benjamin Hollander Jan 2000

The Effects Of Social Support On Men's Exercise-Related Cardiovascular Reactivity., Daniel Benjamin Hollander

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A predictor of cardiovascular disease is increased heart rate and blood pressure reactivity to physical tasks. One psychological factor that is associated with a reduced cardiac (i.e., heart rate) and vascular (blood pressure) reactivity has been social support. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the effects of social support on exercise-related CV reactivity. It was hypothesized that participants would demonstrate lower CVR in the Partner Present condition than in the Alone condition and that level of intimacy would be related to CVR. Male participants (N = 32) who were in an enduring romantic relationship (i.e., minimum duration …

Nato Intervention On Trial: The Legal Case That Was Never Made, Paul Williams, Michael Scharff Jan 2000

Nato Intervention On Trial: The Legal Case That Was Never Made, Paul Williams, Michael Scharff

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

The United States and its NATO allies have defended the air strikes against Yugoslavia on moral grounds (to stop atrocities) and security grounds (to prevent the conflict from spilling over to neighboring European countries), but curiously they have never articulated a legal justification for the intervention. The nearest the NATO countries have come to articulating a legal rationale has been to cite various resolutions of the Security Council, in which the Council has determined that the actions of Yugoslavia in Kosovo constitute a threat to peace and security in the region and, pursuant to Chapter VII of the UN Charter, …

A Structure-Model For The Hamlet-Tradition, Christopher Scott Chiron Jan 2000

A Structure-Model For The Hamlet-Tradition, Christopher Scott Chiron

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The "hero-as-fool" structure-model for the Hamlet-story proposed by William F. Hansen is modified into an "Amlethan" structure-model with five major elements: ( 1) the Usurpation; (2) the First Test (of the Maiden); (3) the Second Test (of the Mother); (4) the Third Test (of the Journey); and (5) the Revenge. The first and last elements emphasize the "avenging son" aspect of the story whereas the middle three elements emphasize the "hero-as-fool" aspect. The Amlethan structure-model is then re-applied to the two "essential" texts in the tradition, Saxo Grammaticus' narrative of Amleth (c. 1200) and William Shakespeare's play Hamlet (c. 1600). …

The Relationship Between Childhood Sexual Abuse And Revictimization In Adulthood Among Uni College Students, Kristine R. Wroblewski

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a relationship between childhood sexual abuse and adult revictimization. Two hypotheses were examined. It was hypothesized that childhood victims of sexual abuse were more likely to be revictimized as adults. It was also hypothesized that there would be significant differences in demographic and psychosocial correlates between victims of childhood sexual abuse and those who did not report childhood sexual abuse.

The Health and Safety Survey was administered to 589 students at the University of Northern Iowa. There were 398 female respondents and 182 male respondents. The Health and Safety …

Conflicts Between U.S. Law And International Treaties Concerning Geographical Indications, Christine Farley Jan 2000

Conflicts Between U.S. Law And International Treaties Concerning Geographical Indications, Christine Farley

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

It should not be surprising that the United States is not a major proponent of the protection of geographical indications. Countries that stand to benefit the most from this protection are those that have a long history of traditional industries, such as many European countries. These historical differences may help explain the stance that the United States has taken with regard to the protection of geographical indications, as compared to its stance towards other intellectual property rights negotiated in TRIPs Agreement. But the inability of the U.S. to benefit to the same extent as European countries, because of its apparent …

Determinants Of Citations To Articles In Elite Reviews Interpreting Legal Citations, Ian Ayres, Fredrick E. Vars Jan 2000

Determinants Of Citations To Articles In Elite Reviews Interpreting Legal Citations, Ian Ayres, Fredrick E. Vars

Essays, Reviews, and Shorter Works

This article analyzes the determinants of citations to pieces published from 1980 to 1995 in Harvard Law Review, Stanford Law Review, and The Yale Law Journal. We also rank articles by number of citations using regressions controlling for time since publication, journal, and subject area. To summarize a few of our results: cita- tions per year peak at 4 years after publication, and an article receives half of its expected total lifetime citations after 4.6 years; appearing first in an issue is a sig- nificant advantage; international law articles receive fewer citations; jurisprudence articles are cited more often; articles by …

Their Promises Of Paradise: Will Olmstead V. L.C. Resuscitate The Constitutional Least Restrictive Alternative Principle In Mental Disability Law, Michael L. Perlin Jan 2000

Their Promises Of Paradise: Will Olmstead V. L.C. Resuscitate The Constitutional Least Restrictive Alternative Principle In Mental Disability Law, Michael L. Perlin

Articles & Chapters

This article argues that the Supreme Court's decision in Olmstead v. L.C., 119 S. Ct. 2176 (1999), finding a qualified right to community treatment and services for certain institutionalized persons under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and endorsing an "integration mandate," forces us to reconsider the role of the "least restrictive alternative" in institutional mental disability law, and may serve to resuscitate and revitalize the constitutional foundations of that principle in this area of the law. In this context, Olmstead has the capacity to be the Supreme Court's most therapeutic mental disability law decision since that Court decided, in …
