Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

Migratory paths of North American waterbirds have traditionally been evaluated by relocating birds banded as nestlings. Although over 8,000 banded Double-crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) have been recovered in North America since 1923, the movements of wintering and breeding cormorants remain poorly understood. We initiated a satellite telemetry study to determine the annual and regional distributions of 25 cormorants (in each of two study years) captured near primary aquaculture areas in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Preliminary data suggest that cormorants generally remained near aquaculture facilities where they were captured, marked, and released. We conducted surveys of federal officials nationwide and of local officials in California to determine historical and temporal aspects, location, size, and control of American crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos) urban roosts. The national survey consisted of a 2-page questionnaire sent via email to United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services state directors representing the lower 48 states. The California survey consisted of a 3-page questionnaire mailed by the League of California Cities to 473 towns and cities and an email inquiry sent to Agriculture Commissioners in 29 counties. It was hypothesized white-tailed deer {Odocoileus virginianus) could be readily conditioned to 2 commonly used deterrents, Deer-Away® Big Game Repellent (BGR) and blood meal (BM). Plots were randomly assigned BGR, BM and control. Free-ranging deer were initially conditioned to forage for corn at each 49m2 bare earth plots delivered at 0500 hr and 1600 hr by programmable sling-type feeders. Hoof prints were counted within a 3.7m2 sample area of each plot to quantify activity. Following preconditioning, data were collected during 5, 5-day periods. Application of BGR and BM to their respective bare earth plots occurred during periods 2,4 and 5. …

Odors are frequently used to attract coyotes (Canis latrans) to control devices. Coyote olfactory perception is vital to effectively manage depredation of livestock by coyotes because of the importance of volatile cues to this species. Lures are usually chosen to reflect the biological needs of coyotes as well as relying on food-seeking behaviors to elicit attraction. Anise (Illicum verum) was chosen as the stimulus because of its attractiveness to dogs and its common use as an ingredient in animal foods. Theses

Eye movements can be thought of as a window onto pre-conscious thought. Patterns of visual fixations over time as well as space can reveal cognitive strategies that are not amenable to conscious control or verbalization. A spatial analysis of an eye movement trace usually emphasizes the role that eye movements have in moving the retinal image of an object of interest from the periphery to the fovea for closer inspection. It is generally believed that a sequence of fixations across a region of space builds up the perception of a high-resolution field of view everywhere. Recent studies have shown that …

Enhancing physiological processes and reducing production costs associated with mating are key considerations for optimizing swine breeding herd management. Successful matings from either natural mating or artificial insemination, involve coordinating insemination with ovulation. Hand mating or pen mating takes advantage of the boar’s innate ability to determine which females are in estrus and carry out the breeding process. However, as the swine industry has evolved, artificial insemination is emphasized as a way to capitalize on advantages beyond estrus detection.

Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs, Acetaminophen, Cyclooxygenase 2, And Fever, Daniel L. Simmons, David Wagner, Kenneth Westover

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are frequently used antipyretic agents that most probably exert their antifever effect by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX)–2. Thus, COX-2–selective drugs or null mutation of the COX-2 gene reduce or prevent fever. Acetaminophen is antipyretic and analgesic, as are NSAIDs, but it lacks the anti-inflammatory and anticoagulatory properties of these drugs. This has led to the speculation that a COX variant exists that is inhibitable by acetaminophen. An acetaminophen-inhibitable enzyme is inducible in the mouse J774.2 monocyte cell line. Induction of acetaminophen-inhibitable prostaglandin E2 synthesis parallels induction of COX-2. Thus, inhibition of pharmacologically distinct COX-2 enzyme activity by …
