Evaluation Of The Anchorage Coordinated Agency Network (Cans) Program, Matthew Giblin

In spring 1999, the Anchorage Police Department and the Alaska Division of Juvenile Justice formed a partnership to enhance the supervision and services provided to juvenile probationers in Anchorage. Modeled after a successful program in San Diego, California, the Anchorage Coordinated Agency Network (CANS) project extended the supervision arm of the youth probation office by having Anchorage police officers make random visits to juvenile probationers. This evaluation examines the CANS program during its pilot phase, June through December 1999. The evaluation assesses whether juveniles participating in the CANS program differed from a control group of non-CANS participants with respect to …

Small Mammal Communities In Riparian And Upland Habitats On The Upper Coastal Plain Of Virginia, A. Scott Bellows, Joseph C. Mitchell

We compared small mammal communities between riparian (stream corridor) and nearby upland habitats in a hardwood forest ecosystem on Fort A.P. Hill, Caroline County, Virginia. We used a combination of small-scale drift fence/pitfall trap arrays and snap traps to capture small mammals during April – October 1998, with an additional winter sample in January 1999. We captured seven small mammal species at 14 sites (7 pairs). Numbers of species were not significantly different between habitat types. Bray-Curtis polar ordinations showed that plant and small mammal community compositions were similar in upland sites and that these communities were most varied in …

Observations On Amphibians And Reptiles In Burned And Unburned Forests On The Upper Coastal Plain Of Virginia, Joseph C. Mitchell

I evaluate the results of a short-term study on the effects of prescribed burning on terrestrial amphibians and reptiles on Fort A.P. Hill, Caroline County, Virginia. Six species of amphibians and reptiles were observed in unburned sites and eight species were observed in burned sites. More individual amphibians (46) were observed in unburned stands than in burned stands (15). Adults of two species (Bufo americanus, Plethodon cinereus) were found dead under logs in the still smoldering prescribed burn. The results of this study suggest that prescribed burning may have some negative effects on amphibians and reptiles. Because …

Horseshoe crabs (Limulus polyphemus) are bled by biomedical companies for the extraction of Limulus Amoebocyte Lysate (LAL), a clotting agent used in the detection of endotoxins. In 1998, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission mandated that all biomedical companies collecting horseshoe crabs for the production of LAL study the horseshoe crab mortality rates resulting from the company's blood extraction process. BioWhittaker, a Cambrex Company is one of the largest producers of LAL in the world. Oviposition Sites And Emergence Habitats Of 13-Year Periodical Cicadas (Brood Xix) In Eastern Virginia, Heather F. Sahli, Stewart Ware

Virginia Journal of Science

While much research has been done on periodical cicadas, apparently no quantitative studies have been carried out to determine the vegetational structure of periodical cicada brood emergence sites or oviposition sites. We determined large tree and small tree densities and dominance in five forest stands which experienced high densities of Brood XIX cicada emergence in 1998. Paired observations were made at one of these sites to determine whether there was a preference for egg deposition in woodland edges versus the forest interior. Correlations Between Burrowing Owl And Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Declines: A 7-Year Analysis, Martha J. Desmond, Julie A. Savidge, Kent M. Eskridge

Concern over the status of species associated with prairie dog colonies has increased with the recent proposed listing of black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus). We monitored burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia) populations and prairie dog densities in 17 black-tailed prairie dog colonies in the Nebraska panhandle between 1990 and 1996. All prairie dog colonies were controlled at least once during the study. We observed a 63% decline in nesting pairs of burrowing owls and significant declines in burrow densities. Results indicated a time lag in owl response to changes in active burrow densities. However, in the later …

More than 80 percent of lamb death occurs in the first 2 to 3 days of age. Generally, starvation, hypothermia (lowered body core temperature), and scours account for these baby lamb losses. It’s essential for a newborn lamb to consume adequate colostrum -- 2 to 3 ounces per pound of body weight -- during its first 24 hours of life. Ewe colostrum is preferred, yet cow and goat colostrum can be substituted. Colostrum provides energy, protein, minerals, vitamins, water, and important antibody properties.

As a case study of the solar-stellar connection, we have analysed a prolonged time series of BV photometry of the chromospherically active binary V815 Her . The surface differential rotation in the rapidly rotating G5{v} primary caused changes of 4.6% in the seasonal photometric rotation periods. This would imply a differential rotation coefficient of k = 0.184, if the rotation of the starspots follows the solar law of differential rotation and the activity is confined within the same latitudinal range as in the Sun, having k = 0.189 and the spectral-type of G2{v}. Sociology

Two great transitions, from seal hunting to cod fishing, then from cod fishing to shrimp, affected population centers of southwest Greenland during the20th century. These economic transitions reflected large-scale shifts in the underlying marine ecosystems, driven by interactions between climate and human resource use. The combination of climatic variation and fishing pressure, for example, proved fatal to west Greenland's cod fishery. We examine the history of these transitions, using data down to the level of individual municipalities. At this level,the uneven social consequences of environmental change show clearly: some places gained, while others lost. Developments in 20th-century Greenland resemble patterns …
