Intermolecular energy transfer is a process of crucial importance to photochemistry and photophysics. Complexed lanthanide ions are well suited as energy transfer donors because they display dependable absorption and luminescence qualities with narrow rare-earthion emission in addition to relatively long excited-state lifetimes.

This project used a pulsed nitrogen laser and high speed digital techniques to study energy transfer dynamics between excited state Tb(acac)₃ and an ionic organic dye called Red 40. Previous studies have shown that apoE is upregulated in injured nerves, and that it may participate in nerve regeneration by recycling lipids from the degenerating myelin sheath to axonal growth cones. However, these studies fail to differentiate apoE function in degeneration and regeneration, because of temporal juxtaposition of degeneration and regeneration in these models. In this study, we characterized the apoE expression during olfactory nerve regeneration in mice, which occurs over an extended seven week period. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegerative disorder characterized by progressive memory loss and loss of cognitive function. The pathogenesis and progression of AD is poorly understood. Recently, several risk factors have been determined, however, how these risk factors function to induce AD onset has yet to be elucidated.

Apolipoprotein E genotype has been clearly demonstrated to be a risk factor for AD. The apoE2 and apoE3 isoforms appear to be protective against AD, whereas the apoE4 isoform has been implicated in the development of AD. Differences In The Dreaming Style Of Schizophrenic And Non-Schizophrenic Subjects Based On Subscales Of The Dreaming Style Questionnaire, Larry Knopp

The differences in dreaming style between 25 participants diagnosed with schizophrenia and 90 participants comprising a control group were examined. A Dreaming Style Questionnaire (DSQ), was administered to each participant. Nine subscales of the DSQ were used to explore differences in dreaming style between these two groups. A significant difference (p <.003) was found for the familiarity of characters subscales, showing those diagnosed with schizophrenia report that the characters in their dreams are unfamiliar to them. Trends were noted for the subscales assertiveness, low involvement, participation, and bizarreness. Information processing, function of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and dreaming style, were reviewed. It is concluded that dreaming style differences are found between the two groups. The significance of dream research is that innovative treatment methods for common mental health issues are being implemented and are proving to exhibit benefits to the recipient. Hopefully, research will shed some light on the etiology of mental health disorders resulting in better treatment methods.

Five restored prairie sites at Prairie Ridge State Natural Area in Jasper County were studied during the growing season of 1998. These sites varied in age from two years to thirty years and in size from 4 acres to 10 acres. Key areas of data recorded were an overall and site specific vascular species lists, phenology of various species, and cover analysis of each site. Frequency cover and importance values of the taxa were determined using randomly located quadrats along line transects. The study examined the impact of working different shifts on the injury and illness rates at a diesel engine factory. A retrospective study was conducted using injury data from 1995-1999 collected from the test site. The injury rates of the shifts were compared with each other and with other studies. The study showed that there was not a significant increase in the amount of injuries on the first shift as compared to the other two main shifts. This indicates that the off shifts may not necessarily cause an increase in the injury and illness rate at the facility. The results …

Cigarette smoking is a risk factor in respiratory disease, cancer and cardiovascular diseases and other health problems. The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of smoking on white blood cells and to assess the relation between smoking, red blood cells, nutrient intake, and newborn weight among pregnant WIC participants residing in Northern West Virginia. The study consisted of 110 pregnant women. Data for this study were obtained by in-person interviews at the clinical site or at the participants' home. The objective of this study was to determine the profitability and risk-return characteristics of trout production in West Virginia. A combination of primary data (from a producer survey) and secondary data (from published sources and expert opinion) was used. Two sets of models (mixed-integer and quadratic-programming/portfolio) were estimated. Raceways and tanks were the two types of systems analyzed, for three different production capacities. The alternatives for the portfolio analysis included investment in a CD (to represent opportunity cost), food-fish production for sale to processors, and recreational or fee fishing. A single adult female specimen of the calanoid copepod Ctenocalanus heronaeVega-Pérez and Bowman was collected during a zooplankton survey carried out in February 1997 in Campeche Sound, the central-southeastern portion of the Gulf of Mexico. The taxonomy of the genus Ctenocalanus Giesbrecht is still unclear. Characters used to separate the species have been considered rather subtle. In this paper the taxonomic illustrations of the specimen collected are accompanied by a revision of the taxonomic features commonly used to identify the species. Relationship Between Pea Crab (Pinnotheres Maculatus) Parasitism And Gonad Mass Of The Bay Scallop (Argopecten Irradians), Paul A.X. Bologna, Kenneth L. Heck Jr.

We investigated the prevalence of pea crabs (Pinnotheres maculatus) in bay scallops (Argopecten irradians) from 1994 through 1996 in a scallop population from St. Joseph Bay, Florida. We also assessed their impacts on scallop reproductive potential. Our results showed that prevalence in bay scallops varied between 0 and 20% and were extremely low during 1996 (<2%). Comparing Gonadal-Somatic Indices (GSI) between infested and non-infested bay scallops in samples assessed the impact of pinnotherid parasitism. Results showed that GSI was significantly reduced in infested individuals compared to non-infested individuals of the same size range (t₁₂ = 2.3, P <0.04). These results suggest that P. maculatus infestation may lower the reproductive potential of individual scallops, but the low rates of parasitism may only minimally impact the host population.

Chickens and turkeys are routinely infected with the roundworms Ascaridia galli and A. dissimilis, respectively. The current study was conducted to gather basic information on these worms and to determine whether heterologous infections (chicken worms in turkeys and turkey worms in chickens) would be successful. Chickens and turkeys were obtained at day of hatch, brooded to 7 days of age, and placed in pens (25/pen) according to infection as received at 7 days of age: homologous, heterologous and control (no infection). We clinically assessed and performed polymerase chain reaction analysis for the GAA trinucleotide repeat expansion in 103 patients from 73 families in Ireland, with a prior clinical diagnosis of Friedreich’s ataxia (FA) or an unclassified progressive ataxic syndrome. The patients were classified as “typical” or “atypical” FA according to Harding’s mandatory clinical diagnostic criteria. All patients underwent blood glucose analysis, and electrocardiography and echocardiography was performed in 99 and 101 patients, respectively. Mutation screening for expanded CAG trinucleotide repeats, associated with spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) 1, 2, 3 and 6 was performed in 86 patients overall, including all GAA negative patients. …
