The purpose of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial effect of calcium hydroxide paste and calcium hydroxide containing gutta percha ìPlusî points. Confocal scanning microscopy created a more sensitive model for assessing endodontic antimicrobial activity. The model consisted of anterior teeth with canals prepared to a #60 K Flex file. Target organisms (A) Enterococcus faecalis or a combination of (A) Enterococcus faecalis and (B) Bacteroides fragilis were inoculated into the prepared site. Despite a deluge of national attention to equity issues, public school administration is still the domain of men. Research attention to women in leadership has done little to close the gender gap in superintendents' and secondary school principals' offices, perhaps because of its focus on successful men rather than on the women who hold these positions. Qualitative interviews examine seven central Appalachian women school leaders in light of feminist standpoint theory, focusing on the way the women enter leadership, articulate a personal construction of the leadership role, and negotiate the borders between their own constructions and the prevailing ones. There is a wide range of brain material properties reported in the literature, and linear elastic models are frequently used for the brain tissue which is viscoelastic in nature. Although anxiety-related responding and skill deficits have historically been associated with performance-based problems such as high mathematics anxiety, the relative contributions of these variables to substandard performance remains poorly understood. Utilizing a 7% carbon dioxide gas mixture to induce fear, the present study was designed to determine the impact of fear-related responding to cognitive task performance. Independent variables included anxiety group, gender, and gas condition. Dependent variables included behavioral, physiological, and self-report indices. The purpose of this study was to examine subordinates’ perceptions of superiors’ humor orientation, assertiveness, responsiveness, avoidance strategies, approach strategies, and overall superior satisfaction. Participants were individuals over thirty that work at least 30 hours a week. 158 participants completed surveys. Results of the study show that humor orientation was positively and significantly correlated with responsiveness. Likewise, humor orientation was positively and significantly correlated with superior satisfaction. Humor orientation was also positively and significantly correlated with approach strategies. However, humor orientation was negatively associated with avoidance strategies. Furthermore, a post hoc analysis revealed that females perceived their supervisors as being …

This study examined the organizational personality types of "upward mobile," "ambivalent," and "indifferent" with reference to their relationships with worker sociocommunicative orientation, communication apprehension, immediacy, and job satisfaction. The study examined self-report data from the measures of organizational personality scales, job satisfaction, communication apprehension, immediacy, and assertiveness/responsiveness. The study found that each of the three personality variables have unique relationships (some linear, some non-linear) with communication apprehension, immediacy, assertiveness, responsiveness, and job satisfaction.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between trait anxiety and goal orientation in starting and non-starting college football players. One hundred and fifty-two volunteer male participants from Carnegie Mellon, Duquesne and Fairmont State took part in the study. The sample consisted of three National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) football divisions (i.e., IAA, II, III). To understand tissue participation in lysine oxidation, chicken lysine α-ketoglutarate reductase (LKR) activity and lysine oxidation (LOX) were measured in vitro. LKR activity was measured using a spectrophotometer and LOX was measured by collection of 14CO2 from [U-14C] L-lysine. LKR and LOX were measured in homogenates prepared from liver, kidney, pancreas, heart, brain, lungs, spleen, muscle, and intestine. LKR activities were 1000-fold LOX. LKR activity was highest in liver and intestine each approximately 63 µmoles/(hr*g tissue). Activity in other tissues was significantly greater than zero except for muscle. Muscle, liver, and intestine contributed about 70%, 15% and 6.5% respectively of …

The overall goal of this project was to investigate the feasibility of a new strategy to inhibit the NF-κB signal transduction pathway. Peptide P1 that resembled IκBα , the intracellular inhibitor’s kinase binding domain was designed to competitively inhibit IκBα’s degradation. Preliminary results in stably transfected cells indicated that P1 produced a two-fold inhibition in NF-κB dependent luciferase activity in Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulated RAW cell line, but not in BEAS-2B cell line. A transient transfection protocol was optimized in the BEAS-2B cell line and the effect of P1 was compared to SN50 a known inhibitor of NF-κB pathway. Our results …

Case-control studies have found elevated risk of colorectal cancer with higher eating frequency. The present analyses, the first to examine this association using prospectively collected information, utilized nationally representative data from the Epidemiologic Follow-Up Study of the First National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHEFS). The study population included 9,978 subjects followed from 1982–84 to 1992. Colorectal cancer cases (n = 141) were identified by self-report, hospital records, and death certificates. Interviews conducted in 1982–84 provided information on meal and snack frequencies and covariates of interest. This study investigates the biological and economic consequences of modifying the species selectivity properties of fishing gears in a multispecies context. The objective is to examine whether modifying the species selectivity properties can contribute to rebuild overexploited stocks. To meet this objective, conceptual and empirical bioeconomic models were constructed. The conceptual model was used to investigate the qualitative impacts and the empirical model was used to derive the quantitative impacts of modifying the species selectivity properties of the gear.

It is well known that people can produce regular rhythms, such as clapping or finger tapping-what is not well known is how such rhythms are maintained over time. One of the simplest activities to measure human rhythms is "continuation finger tapping," in which subjects are first asked to copy an audible rhythm by tapping along with their finger, and then attempt to maintain that tapping rate after the pacer tones stop.

Private property is a rather elusive concept. Any kid knows what it means for something to be mine or yours, but grownup legal theorists get flustered when they try to pin down the term. Typically they, actually we, turn to a familiar analytic toolkit: including, for example, Blackstone's image of private property as "sole and despotic dominion"; Hardin's metaphor of the "tragedy of the commons"; and, more generally, the division of ownership into a trilogy of private, commons, and state forms. This Article argues that securing the rights of transgender people requires a comprehensive and long-term litigation strategy and suggests Charles Hamilton Houston as the architect of the modern Civil Rights movement and the inspiration for a trans rights litigation strategy. Section II briefly details the life of Charles Hamilton Houston and focuses on the legal strategy he designed and carried out to overturn Plessy. We evaluated the long-term effects of small for gestational age (SGA) and preterm birth on psychomotor and physical development of children. We followed 857 singleton newborns to assess their physical growth at 5 y of age using z Scores of weight-for-age, weight-for-height, and height-for-age. Of the 857 infants, 740 children were assessed at age 5 y for intelligence quotient (IQ) using Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scales of Intelligence-Revised. A subset of 740 (68%) children was also evaluated at 1 y of age for mental development index (MDI) and psychomotor development index (PDI) measured by Bayley Scales for Infant Development. After …

Molecular, karyological, and nuclear genome quantification data from representatives of the order Trentepohliales (Chlorophyta) were used to infer evolutionary relationships with other green algal classes and orders. Phylogenetic analyses of the nuclear-encoded small subunit ribosomal DNA (18S rDNA) sequences from taxa representing all of the major lineages of green algae consistently indicated that the subaerial Trentepohliales are closely related to Ulvophycean marine green algae, particularly to the siphonous and hemisiphonous orders. The phylogenetic distribution of continuous and discontinuous types of mitochondrial large subunit ribosomal RNAs (mtLSU rRNA) in green algae has been shown to be consistent with phylogenetic relationships previously …

A total of 411 G clone cell-dependent virus strains recently were isolated from nasal, trachea and lung samples in etiological investigations of acute respiratory tract diseases of vaccinated cattle, including shipping fever pneumonia. The virus infectivity titers reached up to 1.2 x 10 7 plaque forming units per gram of lung tissues of fatal cases. These viral agents were isolated in the 1st G clone cell passage without trypsin enhancement, and induced cell fusion. They have a restricted hemagglutination pattern, agglutinating only rat and mouse erythrocytes. Majority of them has receptor-destroying enzyme activities. They are round and enveloped with a …

This study investigates the use and implications of the trope of marronage, the African-American practice of self-emancipation to forge alternative New World communities, in selected novels by Black women writers of North America and the Anglophone and Francophone Caribbean. It draws on theories of liminality to posit a theory of liberatory practice that deconstructs hegemonic narratives, both personal and historical. Postmodern approaches are deferred in favor of locating these texts and their concerns as deriving from the epistemological consequences of modernity.
