How does language structure patriarchy? How are gendered language and creation story imagery evidenced in contemporary debates on gay marriage? Helene Cixous suggests that Western thought is organized around binary, hierarchical oppositions---the most fundamental of which are male over female and masculine over feminine. Language and its connections to psychological and her/historical origins are central to her work. Cixous suggests that the separation of male and female, masculine and feminine, result in a war of sexual difference. I explore these themes with a feminist deconstruction of Internet sites in support of and against gay marriage. I then utilize Cixous's feminine …

This exploratory study investigates the contraceptive determinants affecting the variation behind different contraceptive use patterns in Indonesia and the Philippines. I analyze how much effect various determinants have on use patterns and whether these same determinants are relevant to a similar degree in both countries. Several demographic studies have indicated that while education and other socio-economic; variables play a large role in contraceptive use, other factors are pertinent as well. Cells may die via a programmed cell death called apoptosis. Apoptosis can be triggered by many death signals, some of which cause cytochrome c to be released from the mitochondria initiating the caspase cascade. When there is an over-expression of Heat Shock Protein 27 (HSP27), the cell does not obey the death signals that it receives. In this study, the molecular mechanism for the HSP 27 inhibition of the caspase cascade is described in human breast cancer cells that were engineered to constitutively express HSP 27. This thesis investigates the feasibility of using several types of ion-exchange resins to remove perchlorate from waters. The capability of the resins to remove perchlorate, as well as their regeneration efficiency, were evaluated using both synthetic solutions and perchlorate-contaminated water from the Las Vegas Valley. For synthetic solutions, styrenic strong base resins showed high perchlorate removal efficiency but regeneration efficiency was low. Acrylic strong-base resins showed satisfactory perchlorate removal, but they regenerate better than the styrenic counterpart. Acrylic weak base resin showed satisfactory perchlorate removal efficiency and very high regeneration efficiency when regenerated with NaCl or caustic solutions. High concentrations …

Hamlet: Red, an adaptation proposes an in-depth method of teaching Shakespeare's works by reconstructing the literature so it is relative to the cultural context of its students. This proposal focuses specifically on Hamlet as studied by at-risk middle schoolers. Among healthcare professionals, there is little research on health promotion and health-promoting practices, particularly advanced practice nurses (APN's) The literature also reveals a paucity of research on the counseling practices of APN's. The purpose of this descriptive, correlational study was to examine the relationships between selected variables, derived from Pender's revised Health Promotion Model (1996), and the degree to which they explain advanced practice nurses' current practice of health-promoting behaviors from a random sample of APN's (N = 357). Among the retroposons, the source of the endonuclease activity is known to be variable. We investigated whether any retroposon genomes encode potential multiple endonuclease functions. Amino acid alignments were generated to reveal the presence of the characterized ordered-series-of-motifs (OSM) that define four different endonuclease functions. These endonuclease functions include a retroviral-like integrase (IN), an apurinic-apyrimidinic endonuclease (APE), the PDD endonuclease recently identified in the R2BM retroposon and an HNH endonuclease signature conserved by the group 11 intron sequences. The phenomenal meaning of romantic love is sought, using the descriptions of co-researchers. A brief discussion of the theoretical underpinnings of phenomenology is provided, and the methods of phenomenological psychology are outlined. The specific methods for arriving at the phenomenal meaning of romantic love are chosen. Six coresearchers were interviewed to elucidate lived-experiences they had with romantic Love The interviews were transcribed into six protocols. The six protocols are phenomenologically reduced into meaning units and their essences. The essences are presented within the context of the protocols. The migration and distribution of contaminants in the subsurface environment are controlled by groundwater movement and the extent of interaction between the contaminants and surrounding rock matrix. Studies have shown that diffusion through the rock matrix may serve as a prominent contaminant retardation mechanism in crystalline igneous rocks; The diffusion of reactive and nonreactive solutes through basalt and breccia cores from the Cannikin Test Site, Amchitka Island, Alaska has been studied. This experiment examined foliar damage associated with sprinkle irrigation of reuse water. Reuse water, municipal water and a synthesized saline water were applied via sprinkler irrigation to 20 ornamental tree species. A visual damage index was created based on canopy and leaf level characteristics to assess damage. The index rated species tolerance to reuse water applied directly to the foliage. After 15 months of treatment, most species had higher index values (greater stress) when sprinkle irrigated with reuse or saline water. Cancer patients use alternative therapies (ATs) frequently and often without the knowledge of their health care providers. The purpose of this study was to investigate oncology nurses' perceived knowledge of ATs, their level of assessment of the use of ATs by cancer patients, and what ATs they recommend to patients. This thesis investigated the feasibility of using a membrane-immobilized biofilm reactor to remove perchlorate from waters. Perchlorate (ClO4 -) is easily reduced under anaerobic conditions to harmless chloride (Cl-). In this system, the perchlorate-contaminated water is physically separated from the biofilm by the membrane. Perchlorate diffuses, without the need of external energy, to the degrading biofilm, thereby minimizing the contamination of the product water by microbes. A mixed microbial culture capable biologically of reducing perchlorate was enriched and attached to the membrane surface. Chlorine is used extensively in the chemical industry and for disinfection of drinking water. Many methods have been reported for the determination of chlorine species. Fluorescence quenching to determine chlorine is a promising method because of its high sensitivity and selectivity. This study focuses on development of a sulfonamide-based collection system for low levels of chlorine in air. Quantitation of chlorine is based on the quenching of the fluorescence signal observed when chlorine reacts with the fluorescent sulfonamide compound. The radon concentrations within fiber crete and the native material from the U1a Complex at the Nevada Tests Site, Nye County, Nevada, were quantified and compared to each other. Gamma spectroscopy measurements resulted in an average 222Rn concentration to be 0.038 +/- 0.0011 and 0.014 +/- 0.001 Bq g-1 for the native material and fiber crete, respectively. The emanation of 222Rn from the host material was measured via lucas cell scintillation. The average emanation coefficients were significantly higher for the cured fiber crete at 0.07 than for the native material at 0.005. While the cured fiber crete emanation coefficients matched …

The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to investigate health-promoting lifestyle practices and correlate these to self identified factors that may limit health promotion activity of frontier rural elders living in Nevada. Pender's Health Promotion Model provided the theoretical framework for this study. The sample included 114 participants that were aged 65 and older from locations in Nevada counties that qualify as frontier (population less than 6/square mile). Participants completed a two part self-administered questionnaire, the Health-Promotion Lifestyle Profile II (HPLP II) and the revised Elderly Health Care Needs Questionnaire (EHCNQ). The Integration Of Facial And Auditory Affect: An Emotional Mcgurk Effect?, Teri Jean Forrest

Research investigating human emotion processing has typically studied either auditory (vocal) or visual (facial) information in isolation. However, speech perception literature supports integration of auditory and visual phonetic information by way of the McGurk effect. This study hypothesized an emotional McGurk effect (i.e., integration of auditory and visual emotional information). To evaluate this hypothesis, emotionally incongruent auditory-visual stimuli (e.g., a joyful voice with a sad face) were developed on a sample of 120 participants. These stimuli were then presented to 30 additional participants who categorized them according to one of eight common emotions. Results indicated significant (p < .001) Condition by Emotion interaction effects, suggesting that emotional information from auditory and visual sources is integrated during the perception of auditory emotion. This integration appears to occur in a predictable manner. To understand emotion perception, future studies will need to consider the interaction of auditory and visual emotional information.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most commonly diagnosed childhood disorders in the United States. The symptomatic behaviors of ADHD often start as noncompliant behaviors, which can manifest themselves into increasingly inappropriate behaviors. If left untreated ADHD can become the catalyst for additional disruptive behavior disorders, as the child develops and begins to experience an increase in academic demands, family and peer rejection; This study used a one-group pretest-posttest design that was implemented in four separate ADHD parent and child groups. This is an outcome of study of former foster care youth who aged out of the child welfare system. These youth have been out of the foster care system for anywhere from six months to five years. This study consists of twenty respondents, ten male and ten female, taken from a larger study of 100 former foster care youth. The main areas addressed in this study include investigation into the youth's foster care experience, their level of preparation to transition to life on their own, and their post foster care adjustment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial effect of calcium hydroxide paste and calcium hydroxide containing gutta percha ìPlusî points. Confocal scanning microscopy created a more sensitive model for assessing endodontic antimicrobial activity. The model consisted of anterior teeth with canals prepared to a #60 K Flex file. Target organisms (A) Enterococcus faecalis or a combination of (A) Enterococcus faecalis and (B) Bacteroides fragilis were inoculated into the prepared site. A Zeiss confocal scanning microscope defined living and dead organisms. Teeth were seeded with paste and with the ìPlusî points. Samples were studied by (CFU/ml) and laser …
