In this presentation the author argues that improvement in schooling and teacher education in the United States will be successful to the extent that educators establish via research and practice and make known to the public and to budget controlling authorities the clear relationships which exist between investment in education and productive citizenship. Until educators become more proactive, demanding, political, and willing to serve as American Reconstructioneers of Culture (ARCs), our educational institutions will continue to drift with a tide of mediocrity as resources flow to other more viable and vocal areas.

: Results of a survey of the level of access provided to selected free scholarly electronic journals by academic libraries is reported. A list of scholarly journals that are available electronically without any access limitations was compiled, and for each title the number of holding institutions on OCLC and its coverage by major abstracting and indexing services was determined. The twenty-five most popular titles, determined by number of holding institutions on OCLC, were searched on a random sample of library websites and catalogs to provide a separate gauge for access levels provided by institutions. Much as James Joyce’s Ulysses uses Bloom’s Jewishness to help define Stephen’s progress toward artistic autonomy and exile, Dorothy Richardson’s autobiographical novel Pilgrimage relies on the figure of a Jew to reflect and shape its protagonist’s emotional and political concerns. Critics have recently begun to uncover the role that the Jew plays in this thirteen-part novel, noting the ways Miriam Henderson constructs her Englishness by means of comparison with the Jew, the extent to which her views are influenced by the anti-Semitic and misogynist Weininger, and the threat to her individuality which Miriam senses in her Jewish suitor.1 Missing from …

Differences in canopy exchange of water and carbon dioxide that occur due to changes in tree structure and density in montane Norway spruce stands of Central Germany were analyzed with a three dimensional microclimate and gas exchange model STANDFLUX. The model was used to calculate forest radiation absorption, the net photosynthesis and transpiration of single trees, and gas exchange of tree canopies. Model parameterizations were derived for six stands of Picea abies (L.) Karst. differing in age from 40 to 140 years and in density from 1680 to 320 trees per hectare. Renardine is a bone tar product available for use as a coyote (Canis latrans) repellent in Canada. The substance is applied to pasture borders to prevent coyotes from entering and attacking sheep. Because data regarding the effectiveness of Renardine are lacking, we designed two experiments. In the first, six pairs of coyotes were first presented with 400 g of ground meat in two pans (200 g/pan) with false screen bottoms. Beneath the screens were absorbent tubes wetted with 10 ml of distilled water. Subsequently, during a treatment period, the absorbent tube was wetted with 10 ml of Renardine. …

Dg93, A Nodule-Abundant Mrna Of Datisca Glomerata With Homology To A Soybean Early Nodulin Gene, Nancy Fujishige

We have isolated a 590-bp full-length cDNA clone designated Dg93, an mRNA that is highly expressed in symbiotic root nodules of the actinorhizal host Datisca glomerata. Dg93 mRNA encodes a deduced polypeptide of 105 amino acids with significant identity (74%) to the soybean (Glycine max) early nodulin (ENOD) gene GmENOD93 (Kouchi and Hata, 1993). Dg93 mRNA is abundant in nodules at 4 weeks post inoculation, the earliest time assayed, and steady-state mRNA levels remain elevated 11 weeks after inoculation. Spatial patterns of Dg93 mRNA expression are complex, with transcript accumulation in the nodule lobe meristem, early infection zone, periderm, and …

Ex Parte Civil Commitment, Family Care-Givers, And Schizophrenia: A Therapeutic Jurisprudence Analysis, Éva Szeli

First, this Article will discuss schizophrenia and its impact on these individuals and their families. Family variables in the course of the disorder will be highlighted. Then, this Article will review the legal power afforded such families by ex parte provisions in civil commitment statutes using the involuntary examination portion of the Florida mental health code as a model. Finally, this Article will assess this system of civil commitment available to care-giving families in therapeutic jurisprudential terms, with recommendations for maximizing the therapeutic consequences and minimizing the antitherapeutic consequences of ex parte procedures.

Detection Of Parasitised Fly Puparia Using Near Infrared Spectroscopy, Floyd E. Dowell, Alberto B. Broce, Feng Xie, James E. Throne, James E. Baker

Near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy was used to identify house fly (Musca domestica L.) puparia that contained viable parasitoids. Results derived from a partial least squares analysis of NIR spectra showed that about 80–90% of puparia containing parasitoids could be identified correctly. Difference spectra and beta coefficients indicated that absorption differences between parasitised and unparasitised puparia may have been due to moisture content and/or differences in composition of chitin or lipid components. Detection of viable hymenopterous parasitoids within puparia could assist commercial insectaries in delivering known quantities of parasitised puparia for biological control of house flies and other filth flies …

Avidin is a glycoprotein found in chicken egg white, that sequesters the vitamin biotin. Here we show that when present in maize at levels of ≥100 p.p.m., avidin is toxic to and prevents development of insects that damage grains during storage. Insect toxicity is caused by a biotin deficiency, as shown by prevention of toxicity with biotin supplementation. The avidin maize is not, however, toxic to mice when administered as the sole component of their diet for 21 days. These data suggest that avidin expression in food or feed grain crops can be used as a biopesticide against a spectrum …

Predatory geocorids, Geocoris punctipes Say (Geocoridae: Hemiptera), that had been reared (domesticated) for over 6 years (60 continuous generations) on an artificial diet were compared with feral (F1) counterparts to determine possible domestication-associated losses in predatory capabilities. Using adult female predators provided with either tobacco budworm larvae, Heliothis uirescens F., or pea aphids, Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris, as prey, I measured predator weights, handling time with a single prey, amount extracted, consumption rate, and feeding (gut) capacity. Domesticated females were significantly smaller than ferals, weighing 4.53 mg versus 5.09 mg, respectively. Domestication did not significantly influence handling times, which averaged 131 …

We describe a field facility that controls CO₂ along continuous gradients from superambient to subambient concentrations. The facility consists of two transparent, tunnel-shaped chambers, each 1-m wide and tall and 60-m long. Pure CO₂ is injected into one chamber during daylight to initiate a superambient CO₂ gradient (550–350 µmol mol^–1). Ambient air is introduced to the second chamber to initiate a subambient CO₂ gradient (350–200 µmol mol^–1). CO₂ concentrations at night are regulated at 150 µmol mol^–1 above daytime values along each gradient. The CO₂ gradients are maintained by …

Hamadryas baboons exhibit a multi-level social structure in which several one-male units, each consisting of a ‘leader’ male and one or more females, comprise a band’ and two or more bands comprise a troop. Cohesion of each one-male unit is maintained by aggressive herding by its leader male [1]. Here I describe the consequences of 2 takeovers in a band of wild hamadryas baboons. I report evidence of infant mortality following takeovers, changes in female reproductive condition within 2 weeks after takeovers, and the reacquisition of a female by a deposed leader male, none of which has been previously reported …

The present paper discusses the ability to determine low altitudes and challenges the effectiveness of current general aviation landing flare instructions. Conclusions are based on literary review from a variety of sources such as general aviation flight instruction manuals, aviation literature, and scientific publications. Key findings suggest that current flare instructions are inconsistent, ambiguous, and of limited helpfulness to pilots wishing to learn how to determine altitude before initiating the landing flare.

The activities of mouse liver glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) induced by myristicin, the active compound in parsley leaf oil, against the carcinogens 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide (4NQO) and benzo(a)pyrene-4,5-oxide (BP-4,5-oxide) were studied. A/J mice were treated with three 20 mg doses (one dose every other day) by gavage. Affinity purified liver GST samples from treated animals showed a 7.2-fold increase in activity toward 4NQO when compared with equal amounts of liver samples prepared from the control group. Activity against BP-4,5-oxide was increased 1.8-fold in the experimental group. Experimental samples also showed a significant increase in activity toward the substrates 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (CDNB), 2,4-dichloronitrobenzene (DCNB), …
