The Effects Of Dietary Fatty Acids And Non -Steroidal Anti -Inflammatory Drugs On Cyclooxygenase-2 Expression., Kyung-Hee Sohn

Dietary n-3 fatty acids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) were shown to have cancer preventive and tumor regressive effects. Fatty acids and NSAIDs are substrate and inhibitors, respectively, of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), which is a key enzyme in the conversion of arachidonic acids to prostaglandins. Thus, the modulating effects of different types of dietary fatty acids and NSAIDs on the expression of COX-2 are studied here. Results show that both n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) inhibit Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced COX-2 expression and NF-kappaB activation in macrophages. The interaction of ADH with C-nitroso, N-nitroso and peroxide substrates was investigated. To better elucidate the mechanism of these interactions, cobalt-substituted HLADH was introduced and compared with native HLADH. Both binary and ternary complexes of p-nitrosophenol with Co(II)ADH caused a blue-shift of the d-d transition region of the Co(II)ADH spectrum, indicating direct interaction of the C-nitroso moiety with the metal active site. In addition to this blue shift with NADH, both pNSP and N,N'-dimethyinitrosamine enhance the absorbance of the 643 nm peak of the ADH/NADH/pyrazole ternary complex, which suggests that these compounds compete with pyrazole for ligand association with the …

There are very few studies on B deficiency in rice (Oryza sativa L.). Reported critical values of B deficiency in rice are contradictory and mechanisms of B uptake by plant are not understood. Objectives of this study were to determine B effects on rice grown in hydroponics and soil; to determine critical values of B deficiency in rice tissues, hydroponic solution and soil; and to explore B-uptake mechanisms in both monocots (rice) and dicots (soybean (Glycine max L.)). Over the past twenty-five years, much of the research on the relationship between culture and education has looked at children's educational processes through the lens of group membership. Environmental education is a component of community-based education programs. Environmental education in the United States and in Louisiana was described (Objectives 1 and 2). Because of rapid changes in environmental science, and the responses of citizens to environmental topics, extension faculty need additional programming techniques and more process and strategic skills training. The focus of this study was to investigate the relationship between violent criminal activity and alcohol abuse, and to further extend the knowledge about these phenomenon which currently appear in the literature. The association between these two variables has been asserted for many years, but few definitive correlations have been established using representative data. This study sought to determine if a statistical relationship exists between alcohol abuse rates of inmates serving time in Louisiana and their convictions for violent crimes. A sedentary lifestyle is prevalent in the United States and is associated with poor health outcomes (Blair et al., 1989). While regular exercise has been shown to have numerous physical and mental health benefits, much of the population does not perform physical activity at a level necessary to achieve significant health benefits. In 1994, a sweet potato sample showing leaf curl symptoms was collected from the field in Louisiana. When graft-inoculated, Ipomoea setosa reacted with mild upward leaf curling while I. aquatica reacted with a bright yellow mottle. The putative virus was transmitted by the sweet potato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci biotype B, and it was designated the United States isolate of Sweet potato leaf curl virus (SPLCV-US). Four independent Southern blot hybridizations using the DNA-A of different begomoviruses as probes confirmed the presence of begomovirus-like DNA in the infected plants. Obesity, a recognized health problem, is associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes and hypertension. Removal of adrenal steroids by adrenalectomy (ADX) slows the development of obesity. Leptin decreases food intake through effects initiated by activation of the JAK-STAT pathway. Defects in leptin signaling lead to obesity, which is associated with hyperleptinemia and leptin resistance. In chapter 4, leptin induces phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) mRNA expression and increases glucose production in hepatocytes from lean but not obese Zucker rats. This suggests that hyperleptinemia in obesity causes hyperglycemia. In chapter 5, ADX decreased the levels of PEPCK mRNA, and increased leptin receptor mRNA expression …

Kate Chopin's Contribution To Realism And Naturalism: Reconsiderations Of W. D. Howells, Maupassant, And Flaubert., Jean Ann Witherow

No one has previously undertaken a detailed examination of Kate Chopin's documented intertextuality with writers such as W. D. Howells, Hamlin Garland, Maupassant, and Flaubert. My purpose is to examine Chopin's works in the context of writers with whom she interacts and so to reveal her impact on the development of literary realism and naturalism. My study reveals that, though her mature writing eliminates sentimentalism, she never abandons romance elements residual from her youth. Her typically subjective narrator removes narrative authority, intensifies our involvement with characters, and validates the marginalized voice. Darwin and the philosophers temper her Catholicism, yet she …

Arti Rai's article in the Fall 1999 issue of the Northwestern University Law Review explores the proper use of both legal rules and prescriptive norms to shape behavior in the basic biological research community. Rai's article builds upon the extensive work in this area by Rebecca Eisenberg, which first attained prominence through Eisenberg's article in the December 1987 issue of the Yale Law Journal. Eisenberg concludes that the use of patents in the area of basic biological research may frustrate central norms of the community. Bacterial hyaluronidases, enzymes capable of breaking down hyaluronate, are produced by a number of pathogenic Gram-positive bacteria that initiate infections at the skin or mucosal surfaces. Since reports of the hyaluronidases first appeared, there have been numerous suggestions as to the role of the enzyme in the disease process. Unlike some of the other more well studied virulence factors, much of the information on the role of hyaluronidase is speculative, with little or no data to substantiate proposed roles. Private property is a rather elusive concept. Any kid knows what it means for something to be mine or yours, but grownup legal theorists get flustered when they try to pin down the term. Typically they, actually we, turn to a familiar analytic toolkit: including, for example, Blackstone's image of private property as "sole and despotic dominion"; Hardin's metaphor of the "tragedy of the commons"; and, more generally, the division of ownership into a trilogy of private, commons, and state forms. Response Of The Tick Dermacentor Variabilis (Acari: Ixodidae) To Hemocoelic Inoculation Of Borrelia Burgdorferi (Spirochetales), Robert Johns, Daniel E. Sonenshine, Wayne L. Hynes

When Borrelia burgdorferi B31 low passage strain spirochetes were directly injected into the hemocoel of Dermacentor variabilis(Say) females, the bacteria were cleared from the hemocoel within < 24 h. Viable spirochetes were not found in hemolymph, salivary gland, or ovary tissues by subculturing or by IFA. The hemocyte population increased ≈6 times within the first 6 h after inoculation compared with the uninoculated controls. In contrast, the soluble total hemolymph protein content decreased inversely with the increase in hemocytes. Borreliacidal activity was demonstrated with cell-free hemolymph from D. variabilis. In vitro antimicrobial assays using hemolymph from borrelia-challenged and nonchallenged ticks resulted in 72% spirochete reductions compared with only 11.5%, respectively, within 1 h. Additional evidence of induced antimicrobial hemolymph protein activity was demonstrated by SDS-PAGE, which revealed upregulation of a lysozyme-like peptide (≈ 15 kDa) (22% increase) and the induction of a ≈ 5.8 kDa peptide in the B. burgdorferi-challenged ticks.
