Detecting The Cause Of Acidification At A Seasonal Wetland On The Swan Coastal Plain, Western Australia, Through Laboratory And Field Mesocosm Experiments, Kelli O'Neill

Acidification (pH< 4.5) was detected at Lake Jandabup, a shallow, seasonal wetland on the Swan Coastal Plain. Western Australia. Concern has been raised because populations of invertebrate species have declined or disappeared since acidification, potentially compromising the status of the lake as a nature reserve. The Jake bed is underlain with pyrite (feS2), which oxidises when dry producing sulfates, hydrogen ions and ferrous iron. Being seasonal, Lake Jandabup would be expected to be naturally acidic, but the more recent trend has been a prolonged (> 1 year) and extreme acidification (pH < 4.0). This study endeavoured to explain why the Jake may have undergone an acidic change, why it may have recovered and whether it will happen again. It was hypothesised that the acidification may have been caused by prolonged drying of the lake causing excessive oxidation of pyrite which produced more acid than the wetland could neutralise through buffering. The hypothesis was tested through laboratory and field experiments. The laboratory experiment involved taking intact sediment cores from around the lake, drying them for various lengths of time, and measuring pH, sulfate, total iron, total alkalinity and total aridity upon rehydration. Dried sediment from diatomaceous earth under Fe(OH)3 precipitate gave the lowest pH of less than 4.0. High sulfates, low alkalinity and low pH were interrelated. While drying in its own right produced low pH, generally there was no significant difference between drying times for release of selected variables. Recent work indicates that nitrogen stable isotopic signatures of aquatic biota can be used to link nutrient inputs in the marine environment to terrestrial sources. While this technique of tracing nutrients has been shown to be effective in environments that are not nutrient limited, it has not been proved that this method is effective in oligotrophic environments. This study examined whether nitrogen stable isotopic signatures of marine biota can be used to trace the distribution of sewage effluent in highly mixed, nitrogen limited waters, by examining the δ15N values of marine biota situated close to and distant from …

A Diet Study Of Australia's Most Critically Endangered Mammal, Gilbert's Potoroo, Potorous Gilbertii (Marsupialia : Potoroidae), Vinh Nguyen

After 125 years of presumed extinction, Gilbert's Potoroo (Potorous gilbertii) was rediscovered in 1994 in Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve, Albany. As only one population is known to exist, conservation is of prime importance. Faecal analysis was used to examine the diet of P. gilbertii. The species was found to be predominantly mycophagous (fungus-feeding) with invertebrate and plant matter fanning only a small part of its diet. Fungal material made up more than 90% of faecal matter throughout the year. A total of 44 fungal spore types were discerned. Of these, five were tentatively identified to species level with the …

Most of them have found his portrayals of women to be very humiliating. On the other hand, Spanish heterosexual, mainly male, film critics have attacked him for focusing only on portrayals of marginal genders and sexualities. POU domain genes comprise a subset of homeodomain genes that are developmental regulators. These genes encode sequence-specific DNA-binding proteins that are found in diverse metazoans. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detect previously undescribed POU genes in several invertebrate phyla. A class IV gene and a class VI gene were identified in sea anemones ( Condylactis ), two distinct class III genes were identified in snails ( Biomphalaria ), and a single class IV gene was identified in earthworms ( Lumbricus ). Environmental anthropology seeks to identify issues and propose resolutions when humans are directly affected by environmental consequences or indirectly by policies that may marginalize the concerns of certain populations. Africanized Honey Bees created both environmental and policy consequences in southern Nevada. Identification of the issues was accomplished with literature review, participant observation, informal interview, and conferencing with academic and agency officials related to the human/bee problem. The controversy in risk assessment has implications for urban residents in southern Nevada. Ecosystem simulation models use descriptive input parameters to establish the physiology, biochemistry, structure, and allocation patterns of vegetation functional types, or biomes. For single-stand simulations it is possible to measure required data, but as spatial resolution increases, so too does data unavailability. Generalized biome parameterizations are then required. Undocumented parameter selection and unknown model sensitivity to parameter variation for larger-resolution simulations are currently the major limitations to global and regional modeling. The authors present documented input parameters for a process-based ecosystem simulation model, BIOME–BGC, for major natural temperate biomes. This study examines the relationship between time perception and working memory in 14 children with ADHD and 19 children without ADHD. The children were assessed in a university clinic using rigorous diagnostic criteria and procedures. Three licensed psychologists based their diagnosis on numerous assessment measures. Time perception of the children was assessed using a computerized, prospective time reproduction task. Working memory was assessed using a standardized measure of working memory. Children in the matched group reproduced the 60-second trial with significantly greater accuracy and produced significantly greater scores on the measure of working memory than the children with ADHD. Possible sustained effects of hurricanes Opal and Erin on the macrobenthos of nearshore habitats of the Florida district of Gulf Islands National Seashore were assessed. Pre-hurricane macrobenthic data originating mainly from a large-scale faunal inventory conducted during 1993 were compared with posthurricane data collected one year after the 1995 disturbances. Nearshore habitats examined included both exposed and protected sand beaches, as well as grassbed and lagoon sites. Within one year after the hurricanes, few faunal effects could be discerned at exposed beach sites, whereas possible faunal effects were apparent in protected nearshore habitats. The article discusses American Trucking Associations v EPA, in which a two-judge majority of a DC Circuit panel held that the section of the Clean Air Act that authorizes EPA to set primary air quality standards applicable to criteria pollutants is unconstitutional as interpreted by EPA. The court held the EPA interpretation unconstitutional because it provides no criteria for determining how much pollution is too much. The court remanded to allow EPA the opportunity to adopt a saving interpretation of the statute by adopting a binding determinate decision making standard that EPA and a court can apply to determine how …

We placed leaf packs containing different proportions of sugar maple and red oak leaves into a headwater stream before and after a winter spate to determine the effects of leaf species and flood disturbance on leaf pack processing and macroivertebrate colonization patterns. We also collected natural leaf packs from three streams to examine how leaf pack quality influences macroinvertebrate colonization. Red oak leaves processed faster in association with maple leaves. Invertebrate densities were higher on leaf packs containing more fast-processing leaves. This study evaluated the long-term effects of prenatal cocaine exposure on child behavioral outcome at age 5 years, while considering the influence of the postnatal caregiving environment indicated by maternal drug use, maternal psychological functioning, and parenting quality. Behavioral outcome was measured by parent-reported behavior problems on the Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist. Subjects were 210 preschoolers (107 cocaine-exposed and 103 nondrug-exposed) and their biological mothers drawn from a larger cohort of mother-child pairs enrolled at birth in a longitudinal study evaluating the neurodevelopmental outcomes of children prenatally exposed to cocaine. Epidemiological studies have failed to show any important impact of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and disease on leprosy, in contrast to the well documented increase in incidence and morbidity with other mycobacteria in these patients, notably Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The early events following exposure and repeated exposure to Mycobacterium leprae (ML) have not still been studied. Previous studies of first inoculations of ML in the skin of rhesus monkeys have indicated delayed recruitment of CD4+ cells and delayed interleukin (IL) 2 secretion in skin inoculation sites in simian immunodeficiency (SIV) positive animals. Mechanisms of DNA alkylation and repair were investigated in 3 small fish species. Following aqueous exposure to either N-methyl- N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine or ethyl methanesulfonate, the hepatic DNA from the western mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis, was analyzed for alkyl-DNA adducts via high performance liquid chromatography - mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry. Although potential tissue detection limits ranged from 14--101 fmoles of alkyl adducts/mg tissue, no alkyl-DNA adducts were detected in the exposed tissues. To assess the potential repair of alkyl-DNA adducts in 2 other small fish species, alkyltransferase activities within hepatic protein extracts of the Gulf killifish, Fundulus grandis, and Gambusia affinis were determined using …

The plant breeding process begins with the selection of parents and crosses. Promising progeny from these crosses progress through a series of selection stages that typically culminate in multi-environment trials. I evaluated best linear unbiased predictors (BLUP), other predictors and prediction models at the initial (cross prediction), early replicated testing and late (multi-location) stages of a sugarcane breeding selection cycle. Model and predictor accuracy was assessed in the first two stages by using cross-validation procedures. This study examines how problematic representations of brides reflect anxiety about women's roles in the marriage market of the early twentieth-century United States in Grace Lumpkin's The Wedding, Eudora Welty's Delta Wedding, and Alice Childress's Wedding Band: A Love /Hate Story in Black and White. The study develops a theoretical model of stages young women negotiate in order to participate in the sexual economic process underlying the marriage exchange: initiate, self-fashioner, marriageable woman, bride, wife, and mother. Explosives contamination in soils is an environmental concern for the public due to their toxic effects. The United States Department of Defense (DoD) is particularly concerned with explosives contamination in soils due to the thousands of sites for which it is responsible for remediating. To date, the most common technology utilized for remediating explosives contamination in soils has been incineration. However, costs for incineration have been estimated to range from approximately $250 to $3250 per ton and are generally inversely related to the volume of soil. Cytochrome P-450 (CYP) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) are similar heme containing enzymes. Cimetidine (CIM) is an H2 antagonist, and since CIM inhibits CYP, it may also bind to the heme-iron of NOS and reduce NO generation. Six horses each had three tissue chambers inserted subcutaneously on either side of the neck for Trial 1. Trial 2 also used 6 female Thoroughbred horses implanted with at least two tissue chambers as in Trial 1. The goal was to monitor a large number of female alligators over a 3-year period to obtain information on alligator nesting ecology. This dissertation, although designed to estimate annual nesting rates, provides additional meaningful information on methods of capture, tag retention rates, nest spacing patterns, segregation of size classes, nest site fidelity, the relationship between attendance and nest success, the effects of fire ants on alligator nest success, the relationship between hatchling alligators and their mother, and hatchling dispersal. Research suggests that individuals with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) have significant dysregulation in a number of physiological indices, especially the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Biological theories of PTSD propose that prolonged SNS and HPA axis dysregulation places individuals with PTSD at risk for development of medical morbidity and impairments in health status. In laboratory bioassays, total mortality (neonate to pupation) among Bt-cotton varieties ranged from 13 to 89%; however, only cvs. CK 312/531, NuCOTN 33B, and PM 1220 RR/BG caused greater mortality than the soybean and meridic diet controls. Several Bt-cotton hosts increased larval developmental time, but none of the commercial Bt-cotton varieties (excluding CK 312/531) significantly affected adult longevity, generation time, doubling time, or intrinsic rate of increase (rm). Soybean looper larval and predator densities were monitored in soybean fields to determine the impact of Bt-cotton production on soybean looper seasonal abundance. These studies examined the role of micelle fatty acid composition, contaminant body burden, biotransformation, and non-specific toxicity on the systemic bioavailability of 3,4,3',4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (TCB) from the intestine of catfish, as well as the effect of TCB upon the vectorial transporter p-glycoprotein (pgp). Initial in vitro experiments demonstrated that the solubility of [14C]-TCB in micelles was favored by longer chain fatty acids, with higher [14C]-TCB solubility correlating to greater systemic bioavailability of [14C]-TCB in an in situ preparation. The systemic bioavailability of [14C]-TCB was demonstrated to be affected by in vivo exposures to TCB, in a dose-independent manner, and apparently unrelated …

Release of energy-related contaminants occurs ubiquitously in the environment. Cancer induction by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and aromatic amines have been well recognized in the workplace and are also suspected among the general population. Environmental PAHs exposure and effects have been investigated using biomarkers in aquatic and, to a lesser extent, terrestrial animals. Attempts to monitor the presence and effects of PAHs through the detection of point mutations in genes involved in carcinogenesis (p53 and K-ras) would yield interesting clues regarding possible etiologic agents and their potential effect. Bartonella henselae is a zoonotic agent in which the domestic cat serves as the natural reservoir, and humans acquire potentially serious infections associated with this microorganism. The purpose of this research is to contribute to the understanding of the pathogenesis of B. henselae in the domestic cat using a molecular approach. Using sequence differences in a portion of the I 6S rRNA gene between B. henselae genotype I, and B. henselae genotype II, a nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR) was designed and used to investigate various phases of feline bartonellosis.
