Evolutionary Algorithms For Solving Large Time Dependent Traveling Salesman Problems, Leonard J. Testa
Theses
This thesis presents an evolutionary algorithm (EA) to efficiently solve large instances of the time dependent travelling salesman problem (TDTSP). In this approach, the path the salesman must follow is structured as an ordered list of cities. The path may optionally have two kinds of constraints. Precedence constraints specify that a specific city must be visited before another specific city. "Time windows" specify the time at which specific cities must be visited. This work demonstrate that EAs are more effective than traditional methods, such as linear or dynamic programming, for solving general TDTSPs of up to 50 cities. This thesis …

Living African Elephants Belong To Two Species: Loxodonta Africana (Blumenbach, 1797) And Loxodonta Cyclotis (Matschie, 1900), Peter Grubb, Colin P. Groves, Joseph P. Dudley, Jeheskel Shoshani

Living bush and forest African elephants, hitherto regarded as a single species, are evolutionarily and ecologically distinct forms. They deserve to be ranked as full species: the bush African elephant, Loxodonta africana (Blumenbach, 1797), and the forest African elephant Loxodonta cyclotis (Matschie, 1900). L. cyclotis is phylogenetically more primitive than L. africana. The implications of this designation may help in conserving these keystone species.

Scientific evidence is an inescapable facet of modern litigation. The Supreme Court; beginning with the seminal case of Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, Inc, and continuing with General Electric Co. v. Joiner and Kumho Tire Co. v. Carmichael, has instructed federal judges to evaluate the scientific validity of such evidence in determining the evidence's adinissibiliV. In this Article, Professor Erica Beecher-Monas argues that many judges ignore the science component of their "gatekeeping" duties, focusing instead on rules of convenience that have little scientific justification. Homeotic genes encode transcription factors, believed to regulate cell proliferation, differentiation, as well as cell migration to create positional identities during embryogenesis. In the mouse, the Hox complex consists of at least 39 genes, organized into four clusters, in four different chromosomes. Hoxc5 and Hoxc6 are adjacent genes located in chromosome 15, and are expressed in the developing somites of the thoracic region and central nervous system with overlapping patterns. Both Hoxc5 and Hoxc6 are also expressed in the mammary gland. This study demonstrates that a targeted disruption of the Hoxc6 gene results in a failure of ductal development in …

The threat of the use of a biological agent as a weapon presents the American public with a potential for catastrophic consequences with massive loss of life and economic disaster. Reducing the effect of a biological warfare attack requires resources beyond those found within local or state governments. The integration of appropriate federal assets in a timely fashion will significantly reduce casualties and economic loss. Military medical assets support the federal response. Managing the consequences of a domestic biological warfare attack is a new role for the military, requiring different support packages than those configured to support the war fight. …

The decision in Kass illustrates a situation where well-founded common law contract principles were applied to a novel reproductive issue in order to respond to rapidly evolving technological progress. However, this legal dilemma presents a variable that warrants special attention. The parties involved in the case at hand struggled for control of a possible human life; Mrs. Kass hoped to preserve the pre-zygotes for future implantation attempts, and Mr. Kass sought to avoid the tribulations associated with compulsory parenthood. Developing product architectures is a key phase in design and development processes. It encompasses the transformation of product function to alternative product layouts. In this paper, we describe a new approach for identifying modules for product architectures. We begin by reviewing the terminology and motivation for modular products. The new concepts of a functional basis and time ordered function chains are used to formally derive functional models of products. Then, three heuristic methods for identifying modules from functional models are presented. Using the formal functional decomposition and heuristic methods, modular design can be executed earlier in the product development process, …

It is proposed that cancer results from the breakdown of universal control mechanisms which developed in mutual association as part of the historical process that brought individual cells together into multi-cellular communities. By systematically comparing the genomes of uni-celled with multi-celled organisms, one might be able to identify the most promising sites for intervention aimed at restoring the damaged control mechanisms and thereby arresting the cancer.
