This paper presents a low power MOS-VLSI implementation of an oscillator proposed by Freeman to model a very important component of the olfactory cortex. The model dynamics has time constants in the order of 1/220 (s). To accomplish the long-time constants a new filtering technique recently proposed was utilized. All the blocks involving information processing were designed to operate below threshold (weak inversion).

Effects Of Cosolvents And Ph On Protein Adsorption On Polystyrene Latex: A Dynamic Light Scattering Study, Da Song, Daniel Forciniti

Dynamic light scattering was used to study the adsorption of two proteins with different surface properties (IgG and HSA) on negatively charged polystyrene latex. The proteins were adsorbed from water and from water/methanol and water/glycerol mixtures at various pH. Some striking differences between the adsorption behaviors of the proteins were observed. Whereas the thickness of the adsorbed layer of HSA was extremely sensitive to pH and solvent composition, that of IgG was not. IgG mainly showed an end-on orientation on polystyrene whereas several different surface orientations are suggested for HSA under different conditions. The use of ozone in water treatment plants is expanding rapidly in the United States. Ozone offers excellent disinfection properties (including chlorine-resistant pathogens) and does not form trihalomethanes. Additionally, ozone can be used to achieve or control many other water quality parameters such as color, taste and odor, and inorganic and organic contaminant concentrations. Control of ozone's disinfection byproducts such as bromate (formed in high bromide waters) is required. This presentation will review the synergistic effects of ozone applicable to use in small water treatment plants.

Accumulation Of Heavy Metals By Vegetables Grown In Mine Wastes, George P. Cobb, Kristin Sands, Melissa Waters, Bobby G. Wixson, Elaine Dorward-King

Lead, cadmium, arsenic, and zinc were quantified in mine wastes and in soils mixed with mine wastes. Metal concentrations were found to be heterogeneous in the wastes. Iceberg lettuce, Cherry Belle radishes, Roma bush beans, and Better Boy tomatoes were cultivated in mine wastes and in waste-amended soils. Lettuce and radishes had 100% survival in the 100% mine waste treatments compared to 0% and 25% survival for tomatoes and beans, respectively. Metal concentrations were determined in plant tissues to determine uptake and distribution of metals in the edible plant parts. Individual soil samples were collected beneath each plant to assess …

Part of Professor William Eskridge's mission in Gaylaw (Gaylaw: Challenging the Apartheid of the Closet by William N. Eskridge, Jr., Harvard University Press, 1999) is to describe the historical development of the complex legal and, to some extent the cultural, landscape for gays. (pp. 17-137) Though not much of Eskridge's presentation of the history of American law's treatment of gays draws from original research, its synthesis of the available secondary sources is a useful contribution and will likely become a staple of classes treating the subject.

An Analog Front-End Speech Processor Using The Ratio Spectrum, John G. Harris, Shao Jen Lim

We have combined the standard front-end filter bank with a feature extraction process to produce a model that requires dramatically less hardware (or software). This new model, based on the frequency-sampled ratio spectrum, can be interpreted as a small set of constant-Q filters whose center frequencies adapt to locations of high signal energy. The resulting feature vectors are shown to outperform several competing techniques for phoneme recognition. Results from fabricated CMOS analog VLSI circuits illustrate a hardware efficient method to sample the ratio spectrum.

Functional models represent a form independent blueprint of a product. As with any blueprint or schematic, a consistent language or coding system is required to ensure others can read it. This paper introduces such a design language, called a functional basis, where product function is characterized in a verb-object (function-flow) format. The set of functions and flows is intended to comprehensively describe the mechanical design space. Clear definitions are provided for each function and flow. The functional basis is compared to previous functional representations and is shown to subsume these attempts as well as offer a more consistent classification scheme. …

In honor of the Syracuse Law Review's 50th Anniversary, this article considers various developments in health law and concludes that the passage of the Medicare amendments to the Social Security Act has had the most significant impact on the field. The article discusses the impact of Medicare on the culture of hospitals and their medical staffs, on the development and dissemination of new technologies, and on restructuring and reforming the industry in key areas, including fraud and abuse, patient dumping, organ donation, advance directives, patients' rights, and other agencies' regulation of health care providers.

Human Taste And Cognition In Tzeltal Maya Medicinal Plant Use, David G. Casagrande

Results of recent research strongly suggest that people find beneficial phytochemicals by selecting plants to use as medicinals and that taste plays a major role in this process. The research reported here involved an experiment performed with Highland Tzeltal Maya of Chiapas, Mexico to determine if bitterness served as a chemical cue for plants appropriate for treating gastrointestinal versus respiratory illnesses. Eight Tzeltal men and two women were asked to taste common medicinal preparations, describe the taste, and provide the name and medicinal use of the source plant. Simplicity And Complexity In Contracts, Karen Eggleston

Standard economic models of contract imply that contracts should be highly "complex," by which we mean (1) rich in the expected number of payoff-relevant contingencies; (2) variable in the magnitude of payoffs contracted to flow between parties; and (3) severe in the cognitive load necessary to understand the contract. Yet most realworld contracts are simple along all three of these dimensions. We argue that many factors, often neglected in the literature, account for this discrepancy. The factors are categorized as asymmetric information, monitoring dynamics, evolutionary pressures, conventions, reliance on trust and reputation, enforcement costs, bounded rationality, and renegotiation. The problems concerning the development of show caves are here considered by taking into account different aspects of the problem. A procedure to carry out an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has been established in the last decade and it is now currently applied. Such an assessment starts with a pre-operational phase to obtain sufficient information on the undisturbed status of a cave to be developed into a show cave.
