Past-Dependency, Pragmatism, And Critique Of History In Adjudication And Legal Scholarship, Richard A. Posner

Using Nietzsche's great essay on the uses and disadvantages of history for life as his jumping-off point, Judge Posner examines the utility of the study of history for adjudication and legal scholarship. He argues, following Nietzsche; that the wrong kind of historical study can be very bad for "life " including law, while the right kind-the kind deployed by a pragmatic judge or a policy-oriented legal scholar-may deviate from literal accuracy in the direction of a rhetorical and imaginative narrative of historical events that can be constructively employed in a forward-looking approach to legal problems.

Paradigm Shifts In Neural Induction, Scott F. Gilbert

The molecularization of developmental biology was originally seen as a challenge to the integrity of that discipline. However, important new insights from the analysis of gene expression soon transformed the field from one of experimental anatomy to one of developmental genetics. One of the main areas to be transformed from an anatomical to a molecular study was « primary embryonic induction ». The molecular analyses showed that some of the fundamental concepts concluded from the experimental embryological approach to primary embryonic induction were false. First, the neural fate of cells was not being induced. Rather, the epidermal fate was induced …

The purpose of the project was to develop a curriculum of Internet instruction for parents of Washington Middle School students. Through a review of the current literature it was found that the recurring lack of communication between parents, students and educators was identified as a barrier for involving families in their students' education. To overcome this barrier four sessions of instruction and practice were developed to increase the families' ability to communicate with their children's educators. The sessions introduce the basic layout and function of computers, the Internet, using email for communication, skills vital for finding information on the internet, …

The Art Of Science: An Integrative Curriculum, Lisa Kay Dorsing

This project shows the development of an integrated, interdisciplinary curriculum which combines the visual arts with the physical, life and health sciences at the sixth grade level. The integrated curriculum sample identifies and aligns with the Essential Academic Learning Requirements of Washington state. In addition, the sample lessons maintain the integrity of both art and science, the two subjects being integrated, demonstrating how integration can take place while allowing both subjects to maintain their value as individual disciplines. The review of literature gives background on issues revolving around integration in general, as well as integration involving the arts.

Studies Of Tryptophans In Membrane- Spanning "Walp" Peptides By Deuterium Nmr Spectroscopy, Nichole Reed

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

WALP pep tides of sequence acetyl-Gly-Trp-Trp-(Leu-Ala)-Trp-Trp-Ala-ethanolamine insert into lipid bilayers as membrane-spanning a-helices and modulate the lipid phase behavior as functions of n and the lipid acyl chain length. A key feature of the WALP peptides is the positioning of tryptophan (Trp) indole rings at the membrane/water interface. For the examples WALP19 with n = 6.5 and WALP23 with n = 8.5, we have labeled individual indoles with deuterium and incorporated the labeled peptides in oriented, hydrated bilayers of Dimyristoyl-phosphatidylcholine (DMPC). Pentoxifylline Modulation Of The Cytotoxic T-Cell Differentiation Pathway To Enhance Immunological Memory, Eric Goodspeed

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Immunological memory, acquired either by previous infection or vaccination, affords vertebrates a large margin of survival. Subsequent exposure to a "remembered" pathogen signals memory cells to undergo a rapid, clonal proliferation into armed effector cells. This rapidly mobilized clone mediates the specific clearance of the trespassing pathogen. Typically, this secondary recall response effectively dispatches the particular pathogen prior to any manifest disease pathology. This is the age-old, enjoyed benefit of immunity. Though this appreciation for immunological memory has been in documentation for nearly 3 millennia, our ability to intentionally increase its normal level of formation is only now beginning. The …

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

The National Science Education Standards contain several mandates that share the use of alternative and creative experiences in the teaching of science at all levels. An important feature of these standards is the call for learning settings and environments different from the traditional classroom in order to enhance student interest and participation in the learning process. New York City is rich in institutions that are ideal for the implementation of effective science teaching through the use of informal resources. This article uses the American Museum of Natural History as a prime example of this.

The opilionid fauna of Albania is still poorly known. In the entire literature on this topic from thecterritory of this country are recorded 31 species, some of which have vague taxonomical status or need confirmation. As a result of examination of material from the collections of the author and of the National Museum of Natural History in Sofia, 20 species were established altogether. Thoughts On Some Potential Appellate And Trial Court Applications Of Therapeutic Jurisprudence, Steve Leben

Seattle University Law Review

To date, the application of therapeutic jurisprudence principles has been concentrated mainly on specialized trial courts: drug treatment courts, domestic violence courts, criminal courts, and juvenile and family courts. Its application to trial courts generally, as well as its application to the appellate courts, remains largely unexplored. This Article considers three areas in which trial and appellate courts may want to consider applying therapeutic jurisprudence.

Male Circumcision And Hiv Prevention: Directions For Future Research, Johannes Van Dam, Marie Christine Anastasi

HIV and AIDS

A growing body of scientific publications suggests that male circumcision is associated with reduced risk of HIV infection in sub-Saharan Africa. Thus, male circumcision is being considered as a potential intervention in the prevention of sexually transmitted HIV infection, even though this procedure has profound cultural implications and carries the risk of complications, and its benefits are realized only many years later. This report presents the findings of a meeting of international researchers, organized by the Horizons Project to explore the programmatic and research implications of the association between male circumcision and HIV prevention.
