Previous theoretical and empirical research has categorized organizational justice into two primary components, distributive and procedural justice, with procedural justice further broken down into formal and interactional justice. This research used vignettes to manipulate the presentation of these three components of organizational justice. Social desirability appeared to have an influence on the reporting of ethical decision-making.

Role Of The Dopamine D₁-Like Receptor In Amphetamine-Induced Behavioral Sensitization: A Study Using Dopamine D₁A-Receptor Deficient Mice, Patrick Eugene Karper

The ability of the indirect dopamine agonist, amphetamine, to produce behavioral sensitization was assessed in adult D₁A-deficient and wild-type mice. It was originally predicted that : 1) dopamine (DA) D₁-like receptors are necessary for the occurrence of short- and long-term amphetamine-induced behavioral sensitization, 2) DA D₁-like receptors are necessary for environmental conditioning factors associated with amphetamine-induced behavioral sensitiazation, and 3) DA D₅ receptors are required for amphetamine-induced behavioral sensitization. Locomotor activity and sterotyped sniffing were assessed in each of three experiments.

Postlarval American lobsters Homarus americanus exhibit variation in size at settlement and timing of settlement but it is not known if this variability influences future survival. The ability to track the fate of individual newly settled lobsters has become possible with the advent of micro-wire tags. In this study micro-wire tags were used to identify individual postlarval and fifth instar lobsters that were released into the field and then recaptured 1 wk later. The Skn7 response regulator has previously been shown to play a role in the induction of stress-responsive genes in yeast, e.g., in the induction of the thioredoxin gene in response to hydrogen peroxide. The yeast Heat Shock Factor, Hsf1, is central to the induction of another set of stress-inducible genes, namely the heat shock genes. These two regulatory trans-activators, Hsf1 and Skn7, share certain structural homologies, particularly in their DNA-binding domains and the presence of adjacent regions of coiled-coil structure, which are known to mediate protein–protein interactions. In the nucleus, transcription factors must contend with the presence of chromatin in order to gain access to their cognate regulatory sequences. As most nuclear DNA is assembled into nucleosomes, activators must either invade a stable, preassembled nucleosome or preempt the formation of nucleosomes on newly replicated DNA, which is transiently free of histones. We have investigated the mechanism by which heat shock factor (HSF) binds to target nucleosomal heat shock elements (HSEs), using as our model a dinucleosomal heat shock promoter (hsp82-ΔHSE1). "On Horror's Head Horrors Accumulate": A Reflective Comment On Capital Child Rape Legislation, J. Richard Broughton

Duquesne Law Review

The constitutionality of imposing capital punishment for the crime of child rape remains an open question. The author asserts that state capital child rape statutes are constitutional. The author bases his conclusion on the United States Supreme Court's capital punishment decisions, the historical treatment of sex offenses and non-homicide capital crimes, and the brutality of rape, itself. Finally, the author urges caution to ensure that capital punishment is not meted out in a racially discriminatory manner.

This study examined elementary school students', parents', and teachers' reactions to instruction implemented by teachers participating in a special professional development program called Science: Parents, Activities and Literature (Science PALs). Specifically, this paper focuses on students' perceptions of their science instruction and attitudes toward science learning, and parents' and teachers' perceptions about science instruction as a function of their experience with an interactive-constructivist teaching approach designed to focus on student ideas, utilization of literature connections, and incorporation of parents as partners. Findings indicate that the Science PALs project successfully improved teachers' content-pedagogical knowledge in specific science units, pedagogical skills and …

C3H mice that have been infected with a Brazil strain of Trypanosoma cruzi and maintained at an elevated environmental temperature of 36°C survive an otherwise lethal infection. These mice show increased longevity and a dramatic increase in parasitemia levels. In contrast, C3H mice maintained at room temperature typically experience high parasitemia levels and die within 40 days of infection. Previous studies in the laboratory suggest cell-mediated immune responses rather than antibody-mediated responses are responsible for the enhances protection. No Women At The Center: The Use Of The Canadian Sentencing Circle In Domestic Violence Cases, Rashmi Goel

For Canadian Aboriginal women, domestic violence is pervasive. A report by the Ontario Native Women’s Association indicates that eighty percent of Aboriginal women surveyed had personally experienced family violence. In this context, Rashmi Goel looks at the use of sentencing circles to respond to wrongdoing by Aboriginal people. Current Aboriginal justice initiatives emphasize a return to traditional values and processes, manifested in one way in the sentencing circle. Yet, states Goel, such initiatives fail to restore Aboriginal women to their honored place. Contemporary Canadian sentencing circles exemplify this problem; they further injure victims in several respects. Hence, Goel argues that …

Our inability to accurately model marine food webs severely limits the prognostic capabilities of current generation marine biogeochemistry models. To address this problem we examine the use of data assimilation and mesocosm experiments to facilitate the development of food web models. The components of the data assimilation demonstrated include the construction of measurement models, the adjoint technique to obtain gradient information on the objective function, the use of parameter constraints, incorporation of discrete measurements and assessing parameter observability. We report measurements of total organic phosphorus, nitrogen, and carbon (TOP, TON, and TOC) along a meridional transect in the eastern subtropical North Pacific. In the surface waters, TOP and TON comprise 83% and 98% of the total dissolved phosphorus and nitrogen pools, respectively. Between the equatorial region and the subtropical gyre, there is a distinct gradient in surface TOP of about 0.25 µM, but very little gradient in TON. TOC increases by nearly 30 µM across the same region. Meridional advection of TOP along its gradient via Ekman transport can provide 40-80% of the phosphorus necessary to supply present …

A series of multi-layer numerical experiments show that classical finite amplitude instabilities in boundary currents are not sufficient to account for the pinched-off eddies observed in the ocean and in laboratory experiments. These instabilities (barotropic or baroclinic) are shown to lead to an entrainment of offshore fluid into the boundary currents. Eddy separation, on the other hand, requires an additional process, such as a larger scale of motion containing a downstream velocity convergence of finite amplitude; this might be produced by long period fluctuations in the discharge from an upstream source region which controls the boundary current, or by topographic …
