Toni Morrison's Argument With The Other: Irony, Metaphor, And Whiteness, Roy Francis Smith

Theses Digitization Project

Black people, and blackness as a general symbol, has traditionally occupied a marginal or disadvantaged position in American literature, as opposed to representations of white people and whitness as a general symbol. Morrison's fiction in effect reverses this representation and positions white people in the position of the Other.

Long Term Drug And Alcohol Treatment Program: An Outcome Study Comparing Secular-Based Treatment With Faith-Based Treatment For Addiction, Ruby Lee Adams

Theses Digitization Project

The study was conducted to see if there is as much or more of a difference in outcome of treatment for addiction in faith-based treatment than secular-based treatment. The research was conducted using a sample of thirty-seven respondents from various sites in Southern California who volunteered to fill out the questionnaire. Data was collected using a self-administrated survey questionnaire.

Youth Aggression: The Impact Of Attachment And Passive Family Violence, Rosie Maria Mayzum, Doris Menoken Paxton Jan 2000

Youth Aggression: The Impact Of Attachment And Passive Family Violence, Rosie Maria Mayzum, Doris Menoken Paxton

Theses Digitization Project

This study addresses three questions regarding the relationship of attachment to aggressive behavior in early school age children (2-6 years) who have witnessed domestic violence, and to adolescents (13-18) who have been diagnosed with Oppositional Defiant Disorder. The authors hypothesized that insecure attachment is a major cause for youth violence and that a secure attachment may lessen the negative effects of passive family violence. Data was extracted from case files; findings supported earlier attachment and domestic violence research; study limitations and social work implications were addressed.

The Rhetoric Of Science Education Reform, William W. Cobern Jan 2000

The Rhetoric Of Science Education Reform, William W. Cobern

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

Leon Lederman’s Project ARISE promotes a “physics first” reorganization of the secondary science curriculum. As a Nobel laureate in physics, his ideas have attracted considerable attention. Issues outside of physics, however, that Lederman does not appear ready to acknowledge will limit the impact Lederman hopes to achieve.

Going Beyong The Third Grade Science Kit: An Integrated Thematic Approach, Michele D. Wiederspohn

All Graduate Projects

A project has been developed to aid in the design of a third grade science program and/or to be used as a supplement to any existing third grade science curriculum. The project has been organized into fourteen lesson plans. Each lesson plan includes an overview of the lesson, student learning objectives matched to the Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements, activities, a list of required materials, an outline of instruction, and the name of a trade book to compliment the lesson. Current literature and research regarding the topic of integrated curriculum were explored.

Optical Fractionation Of Chlorophyll And Primary Production For Coastal Waters Of The Southern Ocean, Mark A. Moline, Barbara B. Prezelin Jan 2000

Optical Fractionation Of Chlorophyll And Primary Production For Coastal Waters Of The Southern Ocean, Mark A. Moline, Barbara B. Prezelin

Biological Sciences

Our objective was to quantify the potential variability in remotely sensed chlorophyll a (Chl a) and primary productivity in coastal waters of the Southern Ocean. From data collected throughout the springs/summers of 1991–1994, we calculated the proportion of water column Chl a and primary productivity within the upper optical attenuation length (K −1 par) and the satellite-weighted depth. The temporal variability was resolved every 2–3 days and was observed to be greater within years than between years. Three-year averages (n=223) revealed that 10.2 ± 3.6% of total Chl a and 14.8 ± 6.5% of production occurred …

Neural Networks And Structured Knowledge: Rule Extraction And Applications, Franz J. Kurfess Jan 2000

Neural Networks And Structured Knowledge: Rule Extraction And Applications, Franz J. Kurfess

Computer Science and Software Engineering

As the second part of a special issue on "Neural Networks and Structured Knowledge," the contributions collected here concentrate on the extraction of knowledge, particularly in the form of rules, from neural networks, and on applications relying on the representation and processing of structured knowledge by neural networks. The transformation of the low-level internal representation in a neural network into higher-level knowledge or information that can be interpreted more easily by humans and integrated with symbol-oriented mechanisms is the subject of the first group of papers. The second group of papers uses specific applications as starting point, and describes approaches …

Weevil Management In Orchards And Vineyards Looks Promising, Stewart Learmonth

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Research and monitoring undertaken by Agriculture Western Australia is showing that the management of weevils in Western Australia's orchard crops and vineyards is improving. A number of alternative management strategies are being implemented, and future research will assess the effectiveness of non-chemical approaches to weevil management.
