Reproductive Success Of Piping Plovers On Alkali Lakes In North Dakota And Montana, Robert K. Murphy, Michael J. Rabenberg, Marriah L. Sondreal, Bruce R. Casler, Debra A. Guenther Jan 2000

Reproductive Success Of Piping Plovers On Alkali Lakes In North Dakota And Montana, Robert K. Murphy, Michael J. Rabenberg, Marriah L. Sondreal, Bruce R. Casler, Debra A. Guenther

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Low reproductive success is thought to be a chief cause of the steady decline in numbers of piping plover (Charadrius melodus) that nest in the northern Great Plains. Surprisingly, few reproductive success data are published from alkali lakes in the region, where most breeding pairs of piping plover nest. During 1994 to 1997 we measured nest success and fledging rates of piping plovers at 32 alkali lakes across northwestern North Dakota and northeastern Montana, at the center of the species' breeding range in the Great Plains. Annual nest success and fledging rates averaged 38% (Mayfield estimate; 20 to …

Review Of Parasites Of North American Freshwater Fishes, Second Edition, Wilmer A. Rodgers Jan 2000

Review Of Parasites Of North American Freshwater Fishes, Second Edition, Wilmer A. Rodgers

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

In this second edition, the author uses the traditional better-known taxonomy, although a table listing the contemporary (or future) classification is presented in the foreword. The beginning of the book covers the public health aspects of fish parasites, and discusses methods of examining and collecting fish, and then preserving and making permanent preparations. These sections will be very helpful to students and researchers, as are the sections that list parasites by location in fish. The next sections present major groups of parasites and detailed genera and species. Drawings and photographs make identification relatively easy. An important addition to this second …

Non-Native Species Interactions: Management Implications To Aid In Recovery Of The Colorado Pikeminnow Ptychocheilus Lucius And Razorback Sucker Xyrauchen Texanus In The San Juan River, Co-Nm-Ut, James E. Brooks, Michael J. Buntjer, Jude R. Smith Jan 2000

Non-Native Species Interactions: Management Implications To Aid In Recovery Of The Colorado Pikeminnow Ptychocheilus Lucius And Razorback Sucker Xyrauchen Texanus In The San Juan River, Co-Nm-Ut, James E. Brooks, Michael J. Buntjer, Jude R. Smith

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

As part of the San Juan River Basin Recovery Implementation Program (SJRIP), investigations of non-native fishes were conducted during 1991-1997 to characterize interactions with native fishes. The impacts of non-native fish species on natives has often been identified as a key impact, along with habitat alteration, that facilitates loss of native biological diversity. In the San Juan River, the endangered Colorado pikeminnow Ptychocheilus lucius and razorback sucker Xyrauchen texanus, as well as the other members of the native fish community, are the focus of the SJRIP. A major component of native fish recovery efforts in the San Juan River …

Adaptive Regulation Of Waterfowl Harvests: Lessons Learned And Prospects For The Future, Fred A. Johnson, Dave J. Case Jan 2000

Adaptive Regulation Of Waterfowl Harvests: Lessons Learned And Prospects For The Future, Fred A. Johnson, Dave J. Case

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Waterfowl managers in North America have been relentless in their pursuit of biological understanding, driven by a conviction that “science” eventually will provide the certitude necessary for effective management policies. Today, the system of waterfowl management in North America is unparalleled among conservation programs in terms of scope, complexity, and cost (Hawkins et al. 1984). The record of accomplishment has been impressive, especially when compared with the more somber accounts of resource exploitation and collapse that tend to characterize much of the history of natural resource development (Ludwig et al. 1993). For all of the success, however, great uncertainty persists …

Double Cysteine Mutations In Staphylococcal Nuclease: The Effect Of Artificially Introduced Disulfide Bonds On Protein Structure And Stability, Anna Terry Jan 2000

Double Cysteine Mutations In Staphylococcal Nuclease: The Effect Of Artificially Introduced Disulfide Bonds On Protein Structure And Stability, Anna Terry

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Since a protein's function depends on its structure, basic research in protein structure facilitates the solution of many practical problems, such as the synthesis of more effective medicines. With this larger goal in sight, the purpose of this research project is to understand better the chemical principles that underlie protein structure and stability. Disulfide bonds are a potentially stabilizing feature of many proteins. They may form between cysteine residues in close proximity to one another if the orientation is favorable. Often found in proteins produced by organisms that grow at high temperatures, disulfide bonds may anchor side chains together, making …

Stepfamilies : Implications And Interventions For Children, Deanna S. Johnson

Graduate Research Papers

The American family has been in a state of transition for the past three decades. Marital dissolution has quadrupled in the past 20 years, with three in five marriages ending in divorce. Approximately 80% of divorced men and 75% of divorced women remarry, creating 5.3.million married-couple households in which at least one stepchild under 18 resides.

The author of this paper will address several factors and intervention strategies that have been identified as potential determinants of healthy adaptation in children in stepfamilies. Given the increasing prevalence of stepfamilies in this country, it is imperative that school counselors become knowledgeable in …

The Relationship Of Female Reproductive Hormones To Lumbopelvic Pain And Musculoskeletal Injuries In The Female Athlete, Christina M. Aksamit

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

The increased participation by females in athletics over the past decade, both competitively and leisurely, has brought attention to the number and severity of acquired injuries. Females tend to suffer a greater number of injuries than their male counterparts, and low back pain is also more prevalent in this population. Research is just beginning to focus on female athletes as their own separate entity. The female reproductive hormones have been targeted as a possible cause of many injuries secondary to the chemical and physical changes that occur with their fluctuations.

The purpose of this literature review is to identify the …

Gender And Violence: A Study Of Inpatients At A Forensic Psychiatric Hospital, Leslie Sean Carey, Kathie Sylvies Jan 2000

Gender And Violence: A Study Of Inpatients At A Forensic Psychiatric Hospital, Leslie Sean Carey, Kathie Sylvies

Theses Digitization Project

"Our society has generally viewed women as less aggressive and less likely to commit acts of violence in comparison to men. Statistics show that only 13 per cent of the violent crimes in the United States have been committed by women (Steffensmeier and Allan, 1996). However, employees at psychiatric hospitals often report problems of increased violent behavior among their female inpatients. This perception of the female inpatient population is further complicated by the mixed research findings regarding gender and violence. Considering the possible other environmental causations, gender alone should not prove an accurate variable in addressing violent behavior. Variables such …

Cognitive Behavioral Intervention For Children With Disruptive Behavior Disorders In Residential Treatment, Kathryn Joanne Morin Silva

Theses Digitization Project

Increasing numbers of children being referred for mental health services are exhibiting problematic behaviors that can be subsumed under the category of Disruptive Behavior Disorders. This study with its foundations in a post-positivist approach was designed to explore treatment effectiveness of cognitive behavioral intervention applied to adolescents at Oak Grove Institute, a residential treatment facility. This study hypothesized that Wexler's PRISM Model, with its integration of affect, would be instrumental in modifying disruptive behavior as measured at Oak Grove Institute. Although the small sample size precluded statistically significant findings, there were interesting results with respect to two dependant variables. Findings …

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Previously, we reported the expression of chimeric lipopolysaccharides (LPS) in Escherichia coli strain JM109 (a K-12 strain) transformed with plasmids containing Haemophilus influenzae lipooligosaccharide synthesis genes (lsg) (Abu Kwaik, Y., McLaughlin, R. E., Apicella, M. A., and Spinola, S. M. (1991) Mol. Microbiol. 5, 2475–2480). In this current study, we have analyzed the O-deacylated LPS and free oligosaccharides from three transformants (designated pGEMLOS-4, pGEMLOS- 5, and pGEMLOS-7) by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization, electrospray ionization, and tandem mass spectrometry techniques, along with composition and linkage analyses. These data show that the chimeric LPS consist of the complete E. coli LPS core …
