We have adapted the self-referencing microelectrode technique to allow sensitive and noninvasive measurement of oxygen fluxes around single cells. The self-referencing technique is based on the translational movement of a selective microelectrode through the gradient next to the cell wall or membrane. The electrode is moved at a known frequency and between known points. The differential electrode output values are converted into a directional measurement of flux by the Fick equation. By coupling the newly developed oxygen-selective self-referencing electrochemical microelectrode (SREM-O2) system with self-referencing ion-selective proton measurements (SRIS-H+) we have characterized oxygen and proton fluxes from a single cell of …

The ratio of the number of observed taxa to that expected to occur in the absence of human-caused stress (OIE) is an intuitive and ecologically meaningful measure of biological integrity. We examined how OIE ratios derived from stream invertebrate data varied among 234 unimpaired reference sites and 254 test sites potentially impaired by past logging. Data were collected from streams in three montane ecoregions in California. Two sets of River Invertebrate Prediction and Classification System (RIVPACS) predictive models were built: one set of models was based on near-species taxonomic resolution; the other was based on family identifications. Two models were …

Territorial Use Rights: A Rights Based Approach To Spatial Management, Keith R. Criddle, Mark Herrmann, Joshua A. Greenberg
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
The advantages of increasingly fine scale management of fisheries may be offset by increased enforcement and management costs, reduced catch-per-unit-effort and increased running costs for harvesters, and by an intensification of the race for fish. An alternative to regulated open access would be to lease or permanently transfer, spatially defined harvest privileges. Exclusive spatial use privileges have been used to control grazing on public rangelands, and the exploitation of forest, petroleum, and mineral resources on state and federal lands and on the submerged lands of the outer continental shelf. Individual and community based spatial use privileges have been used to …

An Analysis Of Persistence, Resilience, And The Conservation Of Keystone Species, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
Ecologists and economists are increasingly in agreement that ecological and economic systems are linked and that these systems should be viewed as one system. However, because this recognition has been recent, there are very few formal studies of jointly determined ecologicaleconomic systems (ecosystems). Consequently, this paper has two objectives. First, the ecological concepts of persistence and resilience are characterized in the context of a stylized ecosystem. Next, these concepts are used to study a conservation problem with two noteworthy features. In this problem, the obj ects of interest are keystone species, and society is assumed to derive benefits from the …

Paleoenvironments Of Early Theropods, Chinle Formation (Late Triassic), Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona, François Therrien, David E. Fastovsky
Geosciences Faculty Publications
Three localities in the Chinle Formation (Late Triassic), Petrified Forest National Park (PEFO), Arizona, provide insights into the paleoenvironments frequented by primitive North American theropods. At the Dinosaur Wash locality, an undetermined theropod is preserved in paleosols that indicate a transition from wet to dry conditions on the floodplain. Coelophysis bauri remains from the Dinosaur Hill locality are preserved in a filled channel scour. The paleosols at this locality contain carbonate nodules intimately associated with Fe and Mn oxides, indicative of alternating alkaline/acidic conditions around roots in response to a semi-arid climate with strong seasonal precipitation. At the Dinosaur Hollow …

Wetland Mitigation And Amphibians: Preliminary Observations At A Southwestern Illinois Bottomland Hardwood Forest Restoration Site, Kenneth S. Mierzwa
Wetland Mitigation And Amphibians: Preliminary Observations At A Southwestern Illinois Bottomland Hardwood Forest Restoration Site, Kenneth S. Mierzwa
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Much has been written on amphibian declines attributed to habitat loss or fragmentation. Much less is known about the response of amphibians to restoration of wetland habitat. Amphibians were monitored at a series of southwestern Illinois wetland mitigation sites from 1995-1998. By the end of the study period, all seven species of amphibians previously known from the site had been found within restored wetlands, and an eighth species had apparently colonized the site. Amphibian species associated with open sunlit wetlands were the first to enter the mitigation sites and were the most abundant. As trees mature and mitigation sites become …

Thoreau probably occurred in the home of Dr. and Mrs. Ezra S. Carr while he was a student it the Wisconsin State University, Madison, from ■ [lebruary, 1861, to June, 1863. The Carrs were keenly interested in the works of Emerson and Thoreau, and had (granted Muir access to their library. It is reasonable to presume his reading matter included Thoreau's Walden published …

Although the raccoon (Procyon lotor) is commonly harvested and consumed throughout the southeastern United States, little is known regarding the fate and effects of environmental pollutants to this species, and the potential for it to act as a contaminant vector to humans or other predators. Muscle and liver tissues were collected from 76 raccoons from locations on and near the Department of Energy's Savannah River Site (SRS) in South Carolina and analyzed for radiocesium (137Cs). Raccoons were trapped from areas near a former reactor cooling reservoir known to be contaminated from former nuclear production activities, a stream drainage system also …

Additive And Nonadditive Effects Of Herbivory And Competition On Tree Seedling Mortality, Growth, And Allocation, Scott J. Meiners, Steven N. Handel
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
The interaction between simulated cotyledon herbivory and interspecific competition was studied in a greenhouse experiment using two species of trees, Acer rubrum and Quercus palustris, which commonly invade abandoned agricultural fields. Herbivory treatments were applied as a gradient of cotyledon removal for A. rubrum with 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100% of cotyledon tissue removed. Cotyledons from Q. palustris were clipped and removed (control, early, and late removal) to create a gradient of seed reserve availability. The competition treatment consisted of plugs of old-field vegetation that filled the pots with perennial cover. Mortality of seedlings was higher with competition. There …

The alternative pathway of complement is an important defense against pathogens and in tick rejection reactions. The tick Ixodes scapularis is able to feed repeatedly on its natural host and has a salivary anticomplement activity that presumably facilitates feeding. In this study, we purified and then obtained the amino-terminal sequence of the I. scapularissalivary anticomplement (Isac). We found a full-length clone coding for Isac by random screening of a salivary gland cDNA library. Expressing Isac cDNA in COS cells reproduced the activity found in tick saliva, namely, inhibition of rabbit erythrocyte lysis by human serum in the presence of …

Predation Of Juvenile Acipenser Fulvescens By Micropterus Punctulatus And Ictalurus Punctatus, Mark Sandoval
Capstone Research Projects
The predation of lake sturgeon, Acipenser fulvescens, by spotted bass, Micropterus punctulatus, and channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, was investigated under artificial conditions. Experiments were conducted in a 27,600-liter tank at the Southeast Aquatic Research Institute. Spotted bass were provided bluegill, Lepomis macrochirus, as a potential food source during the first four days of each experiment, and lake sturgeon were provided as a potential food source during the latter four days of each experiment. Channel catfish were given either chow or lake sturgeon separately or chow and lake sturgeon concurrently as food sources. Spotted bass consumed 85 bluegill (x = 6.87 …

The Chattanooga Procedure: A New Technique Used For Anterior Multi-Level Cervical Fusions, Elizabeth Van Horn, Scott D. Hodges, S. Craig Humphreys, Jason Eck, Laurie Covington, Joseph E.D. Peterson
Capstone Research Projects
STUDY DESIGN: A preliminary assessment of anterior cervical fusion performed with interbody cage and DOC plate.
OBJECTIVES: To describe and evaluate the efficacy and safety of the "Chattanooga Procedure", a modified technique in achieving anterior cervical fusion.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Anterior cervical fusion with interbody bone graft and anterior plating is connnonly performed. Unfortunately, the plate has been reported to shield the graft from loading thus reducing fusion rates. The use of interbody fusion cages has been effective in the lumbar spine and has gained acceptance in the cervical spine.
METHODS:. Twenty-five patients received "The Chattanooga Procedure" between 7/24/98 …
