The Noesy Jigsaw: Automated Protein Secondary Structure And Main-Chain Assignment From Sparse, Unassigned Nmr Data, Chris Bailey-Kellogg, Alik Widge, John J. Kelley Iii, Marcelo J. Berardi, John H. Bushweller, Bruce Randall Donald

Dartmouth Scholarship

High-throughput, data-directed computational protocols for Structural Genomics (or Proteomics) are required in order to evaluate the protein products of genes for structure and function at rates comparable to current gene-sequencing technology. This paper presents the Jigsaw algorithm, a novel high-throughput, automated approach to protein structure characterization with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Jigsaw consists of two main components: (1) graph-based secondary structure pattern identification in unassigned heteronuclear NMR data, and (2) assignment of spectral peaks by probabilistic alignment of identified secondary structure elements against the primary sequence. Jigsaw's deferment of assignment until after secondary structure identification differs greatly from traditional approaches, …

Long-Term Spatial Stability Of Coyote (Canis Latrans) Home Ranges In Southeastern Colorado, Ann M. Kitchen, Eric M. Gese, Edward R. Schauster

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Long-term stability of territorial boundaries has not been well documented in canids. To evaluate the prevalence of long-term spatial stability of coyote (Canis latrans) home ranges, we compared the overlap of territorial boundaries and the spatial distribution of telemetry locations of packs in southeastern Colorado. From August 1983 to July 1988 (period l), 16 coyotes from six packs were radio-tracked. From April 1996 to August 1997 (period 2), 12 coyotes from six packs were captured and tracked in the same area. Mean percentage of overlap of pack ranges was 89.8 ± 8.3% (+SD) for period 1 ranges over …

Explicating Sex Differences In Marketing Managers' Egoist Versus Utilitarian Ethical Orientations: The Effects Of The Enactment Of Agentic Versus Communal Social Roles, Jason Blair Macdonald Apr 2000

Explicating Sex Differences In Marketing Managers' Egoist Versus Utilitarian Ethical Orientations: The Effects Of The Enactment Of Agentic Versus Communal Social Roles, Jason Blair Macdonald

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This study examines the issue of sex differences in ethical orientations and suggests that the enactment of social roles and the associated use of information processing strategies influence the presence of sex differences in managers' ethical orientations. Managers' ethical judgments and intentions to use punishments or rewards to encourage ethical behavior are the two dependent variables in the study.

A 3 (prime: gender-role, work-role, no role) by 4 (ethical condition: positive egoist/positive utilitarian, positive egoist/negative utilitarian, negative egoist/positive utilitarian, and negative egoist/negative utilitarian) experimental design was applied in the efforts to answer the main research question: What is the role …

Effect Of Chlamydia Trachomatis Infection And Subsequent Tnfa Secretion On Apoptosis In The Murine Genital Tract, Jean-Luc Perfettini, Toni Darville, Gabriel Gachelin, Philippe Souque, Michel Huerre, Alice Dautry-Varsat, David M. Ojcius Apr 2000

Effect Of Chlamydia Trachomatis Infection And Subsequent Tnfa Secretion On Apoptosis In The Murine Genital Tract, Jean-Luc Perfettini, Toni Darville, Gabriel Gachelin, Philippe Souque, Michel Huerre, Alice Dautry-Varsat, David M. Ojcius

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

The pathology observed during Chlamydia infection is due initially to localized tissue damage caused by the infection itself, followed by deleterious host inflammatory responses that lead to permanent scarring. We have recently reported that the infection byChlamydia in vitro results in apoptosis of epithelial cells and macrophages and that infected monocytes secrete the proinflammatory cytokine interleukin-1β. At the same time, proinflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) can also trigger apoptosis of susceptible cells. To study the possible relationship between Chlamydia trachomatis infection and apoptosis in vivo, we used the terminal deoxynucleotidyltransferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling technique to …

Shades Of Brown: The Law Of Skin Color, Trina Jones Apr 2000

Shades Of Brown: The Law Of Skin Color, Trina Jones

Duke Law Journal

Because antidiscrimination efforts have focused primarily on race, courts have largely ignored discrimination within racial classifications on the basis of skin color. In this Article, Professor Jones brings light to this area by examining the historical and contemporary significance of skin color in the United States. She argues that discrimination based on skin color, or colorism, is a present reality and predicts that this form of discrimination will assume increasing significance in the future as current understandings of race and racial classifications disintegrate. She maintains that the legal system must develop a firm understanding of colorism in order for the …

The Future Of The American Military Presence In Europe, Lloyd J. Matthews Colonel Apr 2000

The Future Of The American Military Presence In Europe, Lloyd J. Matthews Colonel

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Ten years have elapsed since the fall of the Berlin Wall, which served as a fitting symbol for the end of the Cold War. That historic juncture brought into question the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which has served Alliance members so well since its founding in 1949. It also brought into question the rationale for America's continued deep involvement in European security affairs. With the gradual realization that the Russian menace is essentially dead, at least for the next 10 to 15 years and perhaps longer, and with NATO's missions having evolved well beyond the original purpose of territorial defense, …

X-Ray Structure Of The Quinoprotein Ethanol Dehydrogenase From Pseudomonas Aeruginosa: Basis Of Substrate Specificity, Thomas Keitel, Annette Diehl, Tobias Knaute, John J. Stezowski, Wolfgang Hohne, Helmut Görisch Apr 2000

X-Ray Structure Of The Quinoprotein Ethanol Dehydrogenase From Pseudomonas Aeruginosa: Basis Of Substrate Specificity, Thomas Keitel, Annette Diehl, Tobias Knaute, John J. Stezowski, Wolfgang Hohne, Helmut Görisch

John J. Stezowski Publications

The homodimeric enzyme form of quinoprotein ethanol dehydrogenase from Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 17933 crystallizes readily with the space group R3. The X-ray structure was solved at 2.6 Å resolution by molecular replacement. Aside from differences in some loops, the folding of the enzyme is very similar to the large subunit of the quinoprotein methanol dehydrogenases from Methylobacterium extorquens or Methylophilus W3A1. Eight W-shaped β-sheet motifs are arranged circularly in a propeller-like fashion forming a disk-shaped superbarrel. No electron density for a small subunit like that in methanol dehydrogenase could be found. The prosthetic group is located in the centre …

Importance Of Migrating Salmon Smolt In Ring-Billed (Larus Delawarensis) And California Gull (L. Californicus) Diets Near Priest Rapids Dam, Washington, Darryl L. York, John L. Cummings, John E. Steuber, Patricia A. Pochop, Christi A. Yoder

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Ring-billed (Larus delawarensis) and California Gulls (L. californicus) have been implicated in depredations on migrating salmon smolt in the Columbia River. As part of a gull management program conducted in 1995 and 1996, we collected L. delawarensis (n = 120) and L. californicus (n = 45) near Priest Rapids Dam, Washington, and analyzed stomach contents to determine food habits and thus the importance of fish in gull diets. Percent volume measurements and index of relative importance rankings suggested a greater reliance on fish by L. californicus than by L. delawarensis. Peak percent consumption of fish by …

Natural Transfer Of Helminths Of Marine Origin To Freshwater Fishes, With Observations On The Development Of Diphyllobothrium Alascence, Robert L. Rausch, Ann M. Adams

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Infective stages of helminths of 5 species that occur as adults in marine mammals were found in burbot, Lota lota (L.) (Gadidae), from the lower Kuskokwim River (southwestern Alaska): Diphyllobothrium alascense Rausch et Williamson, 1958; Pyramicocephalus phocarum (Fabricius, 1780); Corynosoma strumosum (Rudolphi, 1801); Corynosoma semerme (Forsell, 1904); and Pseudoterranova decipiens (Krabbe, 1878). Some larval stages were obtained also from smelt, Osmerus mordax dentex Steindachner, an anadromous fish important as prey of burbot. Burbot, which are freshwater fish, could become paratenic hosts of those helminths by means of at least three interactions: by consuming marine fishes in brackish waters at river …

Beyond Perception: A Pretest And Posttest Evaluation Of A Regional Internet Extension Inservice Training, Robert M. Lippert, Owen Plank, Rama Radhakrishna

Journal of Extension

An Internet inservice training titled "Soil Acidity and Liming" was offered to county Extension agents representing six states (Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia). A Web page was constructed with materials provided by several specialists, and Listserv questions received responses from nine specialists representing the six states. A pretest and posttest were submitted by the agents on-line, along with their responses to a brief questionnaire. The questionnaire responses show that most of the agents were very receptive to this method of inservice training. The pretest and posttest scores show that the training resulted in a significant increase …

New World Nine-Primaried Oscine Relationships: Constructing A Molecular Framework, John Klicka, Kevin P. Johnson, Scott M. Lanyon

Ornithology Program (HRC)

Historically, a paucity of comparative morphological characters has led to much debate regarding relationships within and among the major lineages of New World nine-primaried oscines. More recently, DNA-DNA hybridization studies have provided novel and testable hypotheses of relationships, although no consensus has been reached. For 40 songbird taxa, we obtained 1,929 base pairs (bp) of DNA sequence from the mitochondrial cytochrome-b (894 bp) and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 (1,035 bp) genes. Phylogenetic analyses confirm the monophyly of this assemblage as traditionally defined. The lineages delineated historically on morphological grounds are retained; finches (Fringillinae) are sister to a well-supported clade …

A Special Theory Of Biphasic Mixtures And Experimental Results For Human Annulus Fibrosus Tested In Confined Compression, Stephen M. Klisch, Jeffrey C. Lotz Apr 2000

A Special Theory Of Biphasic Mixtures And Experimental Results For Human Annulus Fibrosus Tested In Confined Compression, Stephen M. Klisch, Jeffrey C. Lotz

Mechanical Engineering

A finite deformation mixture theory is used to quantify the mechanical properties of the annulus fibrosus using experimental data obtained from a confined compression protocol. Certain constitutive assumptions are introduced to derive a special mixture of an elastic solid and an inviscid fluid, and the constraint of intrinsic incompressibility is introduced in a manner that is consistent with results obtained for the special theory. Thirty-two annulus fibrosus specimens oriented in axial (n = 16) and radial (n = 16) directions were obtained from the middle-lateral portion of intact intervertebral discs from human lumbar spines and tested in a stress-relaxation protocol. …

Working Both (Positivist) Ends Toward A New (Pragmatist) Middle In Environmental Law, J.B. A. Ruhl Apr 2000

Working Both (Positivist) Ends Toward A New (Pragmatist) Middle In Environmental Law, J.B. A. Ruhl

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

This review of Daniel Farber's recent book Eco-pragmatism, in which he argues on behalf of taking more pragmatic approaches to the development of environmental policy, provides both the background necessary for appreciating Farber's union of ecosystem dynamics science and environmental pragmatism philosophy, and the basis for extending the new "eco-pragmatism" approach into natural resources conservation settings. Eco-pragmatism implies the intersection of two components-the eco, being the rich and developing field of ecosystem science and management, and the pragmatism, being the classical American pragmatist philosophy represented today in environmental settings through the emergence of environmental pragmatism philosophy. Unfortunately, Eco-pragmatism provides little …
