Analysis Of The Vocalizations Of Orcinus Orca In Response To Anthropogenic Noise, Carolyn Elizabeth Talus May 2000

Analysis Of The Vocalizations Of Orcinus Orca In Response To Anthropogenic Noise, Carolyn Elizabeth Talus

Fisheries

Underwater noise created by vessel traffic in the world's oceans may be detrimental to marine life that relies on acoustic senses for survival. An analytical study was completed which examined changes in vocal behavior of subpod A36, killer whales (Orcinus orca) that reside off Vancouver Island. The average call rate of each call type was calculated from the recordings, and call rates were found to significantly decrease in the presence of vessel noise. Structural characteristics of specific call types such as differences in frequency, duration, and harmonics were also examined and statistically compared with and without boat noise. Differences found …

Condition And Food Availability To Pacific Sand Lance (Ammodytes Hexapterus) In Prince William Sound, Alaska, Julia Mabry May 2000

Condition And Food Availability To Pacific Sand Lance (Ammodytes Hexapterus) In Prince William Sound, Alaska, Julia Mabry

Fisheries

Pacific sand lance (Ammodytes hexapterus) is a common forage fish for seabirds in Prince William Sound, Alaska (PWS). The objectives of this study were to determine if condition of young-of-the-year (YOY) sand lance varies within PWS, and if variation in condition is related to temperature and food availability. Fish were collected in 1996, 1997, and 1998 and assayed for energy content. Zooplankton samples were collected concurrently. SeaWiFS ocean color satellite images and AVHRR temperature images were analyzed for chlorophyll biomass and temperature history. Standard lengths of YOY sand lance ranged from 47 to 97 mm, and their energy content ranged …

Modeling Life Stage Dynamics Of Pseudocalanus Spp. (Copepoda: Calanoida) From Prince William Sound, Alaska, Natalia M. Pintchouk May 2000

Modeling Life Stage Dynamics Of Pseudocalanus Spp. (Copepoda: Calanoida) From Prince William Sound, Alaska, Natalia M. Pintchouk

Fisheries

A stage at age 1D numerical model (SAGE) was developed to describe reproduction, development, and growth of a group of neritic copepods Pseudocalanus spp., and to predict structure and demography of this group. The model tests the relative importance of female abundance, temperature and food on productivity. During spring and the beginning of the summer, stage-specific abundance data from one location in Prince William Sound (PWS), Alaska were available to evaluate the reproductive timing and provide model validation. Development of Pseudocalanus spp. was modelled as synchronous, without overlapping broods. Molting costs and assimilation efficiency were estimated from literature data on …

Inhibition Of Listeria In Cold-Smoked Salmon Using Liquid Smoke And Isoeugenol, Susan M. Vitt May 2000

Inhibition Of Listeria In Cold-Smoked Salmon Using Liquid Smoke And Isoeugenol, Susan M. Vitt

Fisheries

Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen, ubiquitous in nature and sometimes found in seafood. Cold-smoked salmon products have few barriers to inhibit pathogen growth. This study investigated the antilisterial effects of liquid smoke and the phenolic compound isoeugenol. Five commercial liquid smokes were tested 'in vitro' and the most inhibitory to Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19115 and L. innocua ATCC 33090 was Charsol Supreme. Chum salmon samples (100-g each) were dipped for 15 seconds at varying concentrations of liquid smoke, processed, and analyzed for L. innocua. Liquid smoke concentrations of 60-100% reduced L. innocua by 3-logs in the final product. Dwell …

An Investigation Of Environmental Variables Affecting Concentrations Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Eastern Alaska, Timothy S. Howe May 2000

An Investigation Of Environmental Variables Affecting Concentrations Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Eastern Alaska, Timothy S. Howe

Theses (Unassigned)

Analytical methods for determining polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations in spruce needles were developed and evaluated. Concentrations of four PAHs (phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene and pyrene) were determined in spruce needles collected near Eastern Alaska roadways. These needle concentrations were used to develop multivariate models that described the influence of climate and geographical variables on concentrations. These variables included latitude, longitude, radial distance from urban site, elevation, temperature, precipitation, ecosystem type, tree species, non-volatile extractable content of needles, and forest fire impact. The models show that three possible sources of PAHs exist in eastern Alaska, urban sites (Fairbanks, Anchorage and Valdez), …

Perceived Parental Drinking Patterns Among Adult Alcoholics In Residential Treatment, Victor John Behling May 2000

Perceived Parental Drinking Patterns Among Adult Alcoholics In Residential Treatment, Victor John Behling

Psychology

Drinking in Alaska has almost reached epidemic proportions in some subcultures. Alaska Natives have the highest number of FAS cases as compared to non-Natives. Nationally, youth drinking has been correlated to parental drinking. This study addressed the issue of whether there is a difference between the perceived drinking of people in treatment by gender, age, and ethnicity. The parental drinking of one hundred and thirty-four people diagnosed as alcohol dependent or alcohol abusers and in treatment was examined. Significant differences were found between the perceived parental drinking by age, gender, and ethnicity. In addition, many of the subjects did not …

This study used a quasi-experimental design to evaluate the outcomes of a continence program in a rehabilitation center with patients receiving therapies (N=l2) and to evaluate the knowledge and attitudes of the rehabilitation staff (N=27) before and after reviewing a teaching module about urinary incontinence. Roy's adaptation theory was used as the conceptual framework for this research project. The tools used for data collection were: the Functional Independence Measure {FIM), daily 24 hour incontinence logs, pre/post true and false knowledge tests and pre/post staff attitude questionnaires. Eleven of the 12 patients admitted to the program had improved FIM scores and …

Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of The "Youth Leadership" Class In The Prevention Of Adolescent Depression, Jacqueline Oria May 2000

Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of The "Youth Leadership" Class In The Prevention Of Adolescent Depression, Jacqueline Oria

Master's Projects

Depression in adolescence is a common and potentially life-threatening health problem. Depending upon the severity of symptoms, anywhere from 2% to 40% of teenagers are affected with depression (Sadler, 1993). The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of prevention strategies on decreasing the rate of depression in adolescents. It is hoped that a class addressing specific skills identified as having an impact on adolescent depression will affect the youth participating in the program.

Contaminating Space: Project West Ford And Scientific Communities, 1958-1965, Tanya J. Levin May 2000

Contaminating Space: Project West Ford And Scientific Communities, 1958-1965, Tanya J. Levin

Arctic and Northern Studies

From 1958 until 1965 the MIT Lincoln Laboratory worked on a military communications experiment which involved injecting a belt of copper dipoles into earth orbit. The US Air Force and Defense Department supported this project, called West Ford, because the project promised to deliver a secure and reliable system to transmit messages. Some optical and radio astronomers protested the belt because they feared that the dipoles would interfere with research. Other astronomers and scientists looked positively upon the project primarily because of the fields in which they worked, the funding they received, and the contacts they maintained. West Ford casts …

Culture Of Origin And Illness Attribution: The Implications Of Cross-Cultural Awareness For Health Care Professionals, Eri Matsumoto-Lyons May 2000

Culture Of Origin And Illness Attribution: The Implications Of Cross-Cultural Awareness For Health Care Professionals, Eri Matsumoto-Lyons

Master's Projects

People from different cultural backgrounds have different beliefs and perceptions concerning health and illness. Differing illness beliefs between health professionals and patients may result in conflicting expectations regarding treatment choice and outcome. This non-experimental research was designed to explore illness attribution among Caucasian, Hispanics, and Asians with chronic or acute illness. The results suggest that there was no significant difference in illness attribution beliefs between the three ethnic groups; however, primary language, years spent in U.S., and educational backgrounds were associated with differences in illness attribution. Health care providers must think of culture in a broader spectrum than just race …

Seasonal Movements Of Broad Whitefish (Coregonus Nasus) In The Freshwater Systems Of The Prudhoe Bay Oil Field, William A. Morris

Biological Sciences

Adult broad whitefish were tagged with radio transmitters in the Little Putuligayuk and Putuligayuk rivers along the Beaufort Sea coast of the Prudhoe Bay area, Alaska. Thirty-two fish were tagged in Lake Judith, a shallow tundra lake in the Little Putuligayuk River system. An additional 5 fish were tagged in the Putuligayuk River near a suspected spawning and overwintering site. Many fish left the tundra system to overwinter in the west channel of the Sagavanirktok River, however, unexpected movements also occurred. Six (20%) of the fish found in overwintering areas moved to the east channel of the Sagavanirktok River, an …

Maximizing Qiviut Growth In Muskoxen, Morgan A. Robertson May 2000

Maximizing Qiviut Growth In Muskoxen, Morgan A. Robertson

Biological Sciences

Qiviut, the insulating underwool grown annually by muskoxen, is the basis of a successful knitting industry in Alaska. This study tested the hypothesis that the dietary sulfur-amino acid methionine could limit qiviut growth. Effects of commercial rumen-protected methionine supplements were measured in three experiments. In Experiment 1, emergent qiviut growth began in May and June, peaked in August and declined substantially by October. Three commercial methionine supplements were palatable and promoted fiber growth in subadult and adult muskoxen. In Experiment 2, the methionine supplement Smartamine promoted qiviut quality, growth, annual yield and strength. In a commercial enterprise, Experiment 3, Smartamine …

Mechanism Of Impact And Potential Recovery Of Pigeon Guillemots (Cepphus Columba) After The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill, Pamela Seiser May 2000

Mechanism Of Impact And Potential Recovery Of Pigeon Guillemots (Cepphus Columba) After The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill, Pamela Seiser

Biological Sciences

The abundance of pigeon guillemots in oiled areas of Prince William Sound, Alaska, failed to increase after the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. Population growth may be constrained by the physiological effects of oil exposure, food availability, and nest predation." The author "conducted a comparative study among unoiled, oiled, and pre-spill data sets, to provide insight on factors limiting population recovery in oiled areas. Blood samples from chicks in oiled and unoiled areas provided little evidence of physiological effects of exposure to oil. Pigeon guillemot diet, productivity, growth rates, and fledging weights in unoiled areas of southwestern Prince William Sound …

Population Dynamics And Ecology Of Yellow-Cheeked Voles (Microtus Xanthognathus) In Early Post-Fire Seres Of Interior Alaska, Karin Linnaea Lehmkuhl May 2000

Population Dynamics And Ecology Of Yellow-Cheeked Voles (Microtus Xanthognathus) In Early Post-Fire Seres Of Interior Alaska, Karin Linnaea Lehmkuhl

Biological Sciences

Yellow-cheeked voles occupy early successional habitats in boreal regions, but specific factors influencing the species' distribution and population dynamics are not well known. Yellow-cheeked voles were studied in three early post-fire habitats in interior Alaska to relate population parameters to habitat characteristics. Voles were live-trapped during June, July, and August of 1997 and 1998, and habitat components were measured withing trapping grids. Capture data were analyzed using the robust design to estimate vole abundance, density, survival, and recruitment. Yellow-cheeked voles were most abundant in the floodplain white spruce, where survival was stable and recruitment was high. The white spruce habitat …

The Role Of Education In The Treatment Of Chronic Pain Patients: A Quantitative Study Of Factors That Influence The Self -Management Of Chronic Pain, Donna L. Agan Edd May 2000

The Role Of Education In The Treatment Of Chronic Pain Patients: A Quantitative Study Of Factors That Influence The Self -Management Of Chronic Pain, Donna L. Agan Edd

Dissertations

The factors involved in the successful self-management of chronic pain are not well understood. Many issues complicate addressing these factors. Individual suffering, exhaustion of family resources, and the costs to society for medical care, lost wages, welfare and disability benefits demand increasingly more resources each year. At the micro level, patients who live the daily rigors of chronic pain want medical science to solve their malady. At the macro level, health plan administrators want their patients to successfully self-manage pain with the least medical intervention and cost, because they know a cure is not probable. In the middle, the medical …

Effect Of Receptor-Selective Retinoids On Growth And Differentiation Pathways In Mouse Melanoma Cells, Sejal H. Desai, Goran Boskovic, Linda L. Eastham, Marcia Dawson, Richard M. Niles May 2000

Effect Of Receptor-Selective Retinoids On Growth And Differentiation Pathways In Mouse Melanoma Cells, Sejal H. Desai, Goran Boskovic, Linda L. Eastham, Marcia Dawson, Richard M. Niles

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Treatment of B16 mouse melanoma cells with all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA) results in inhibition of cell proliferation and induction of differentiation. Accompanying these events is an induction of retinoic acid receptor β (RARβ) expression, an increase in protein kinase Cα (PKCα) expression, and enhanced activator protein-1 (AP-1) transcriptional activity. These cells express nuclear RARα and RARγ and nuclear retinoid X receptors (RXR) α and β constitutively. We tested the ability of receptor-selective retinoids to induce the biochemical changes found in ATRA-treated melanoma cells and also tested their effectiveness in decreasing anchorage-dependent and -independent growth. The RXR-selective ligand (2E,4E)-6-(5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-3,5,5,8,8-pentamethyl-2-naphthalenyl)-3,7-dimethyl-2,4,6-octatrienoic acid (SR11246) was …

An Upwelling Case Study On Florida's West Coast, Robert H. Weisberg, Bryan D. Black, Zhenjiang Li May 2000

An Upwelling Case Study On Florida's West Coast, Robert H. Weisberg, Bryan D. Black, Zhenjiang Li

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Using a combination of satellite sea surface temperature imagery; in situ currents, temperature, and sea level data; and a numerical circulation model, we describe an upwelling event observed along Florida's west coast. Although ubiquitous features of continental shelves, descriptions of coastal upwellings (or downwellings) are generally complicated by the continuum of processes in which they occur. For the case study presented the winds were light, and the baroclinic background currents were steady for several days prior to the event. These conditions allow the evolution of a specific wind-driven upwelling event to be viewed as an initial value problem. The data …

Comparison Of Plasma Fsh Concentration In Boars And Gilts From Lines Selected For Ovulation Rate And Embryonal Survival, And Litter Size And Estimation Of (Co)Variance Components For Fsh And Ovulation Rate, R. K. Johnson, J. J. Ford

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The objective of this research was to determine whether plasma concentration of FSH was genetically correlated with ovulation rate and thus was a useful trait for indirect selection. Blood samples were collected from 619 animals from five lines of pigs. Line I was selected for increased index of ovulation rate and embryonal survival, and Line C was its randomly selected control. Pigs sampled from Lines I and C were from generations 12 and 13. Pigs from three additional lines that were derived from eighth-generation pigs of Lines I and C also were used. These lines were Line C2, a randomly …
