The Experience Of Recovery From The Perspective Of Chemically Dependent Women: A Qualitative Study, Heidi Kammer Jensen
The Experience Of Recovery From The Perspective Of Chemically Dependent Women: A Qualitative Study, Heidi Kammer Jensen
Theses and Graduate Projects
Research on the experience of chemically dependent women has evolved over the past two decades. This qualitative study contributes to the increasing research on women's issues by exploring the experience and meaning of recovery for women. An interview guide was used to conduct in-depth interviews with six women about their meanings of recovery and motivation for seeking and maintaining recovery Content analysis was used to find common themes of the recovering experience. Results of the study concluded that recovery for a women is not only sobriety, but also includes change and self-discovery. Findings displayed themes of insight and pain as …

Establishing The Inundation Distance And Overtopping Height Of Paleotsunami From The Late-Holocene Geologic Record At Open-Coastal Wetland Sites, Central Cascadia Margin, Robert B. Schlichting
Establishing The Inundation Distance And Overtopping Height Of Paleotsunami From The Late-Holocene Geologic Record At Open-Coastal Wetland Sites, Central Cascadia Margin, Robert B. Schlichting
Dissertations and Theses
Mapping and stratigraphic investigations of back barrier, open-coastal plain sites have been used to establish minimum inundation distances and wave heights of tsunami produced by great subduction zone earthquakes in the central Cascadia margin. Cascadia tsunami deposits have been reported for many coseismic subsidence events in bay marsh settings where tidal-channel features focus tsunami energy. Variable magnitude (8.5±0.5 Mw), frequency (500±300 yr recurrence), and rupture geometry produce widely varying computer model outcomes for Cascadia tsunami inundation. The results presented in this thesis provide specific quantitative data regarding tsunami inundation at the open coast.

Excessive Yawning And Ssri Therapy, Mark D. Beale, Timothy M. Murphree
MUSC Faculty Journal Articles
As we become more experienced with the long-term use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), more subtle side-effects may become evident. Clinicians may be aware of yawning as a side-effect of antidepressant therapy, however sparse literature exists on the topic. We present two cases in which excessive daytime yawning was associated with SSRI treatment.

Phytochemical Comparison Of Puccinellia Arctica To Poa Pratensis, Puccinellia Langeana, And Puccinellia Phryganodes For Evidence Of Chemical Defense, Trent Joseph Volz
Phytochemical Comparison Of Puccinellia Arctica To Poa Pratensis, Puccinellia Langeana, And Puccinellia Phryganodes For Evidence Of Chemical Defense, Trent Joseph Volz
Plant, Animal and Soil Sciences
Puccinellia arctica is a species of arctic grass that is unpalatable to Canada geese, Branta canadensis, and may be an effective and non-lethal means of controlling the growing populations of urban Canada geese that are problematic in many areas of North America. The secondary metabolite profile of P. arctica was compared to the metabolite profiles of three palatable grass species to determine the plausibility that P. arctica is chemically defended. The volatile and non-volatile secondary metabolite profiles of both P. arctica and the palatable grasses were the same. No alkoloids were detected in any of the grasses. Condensed tannin levels …
Comorbidity Of Seasonal Affective Disorders With Schizophrenia In The Extreme North, Julie Ellen Doorack
Comorbidity Of Seasonal Affective Disorders With Schizophrenia In The Extreme North, Julie Ellen Doorack
Psychology
The purpose of this study was to provide estimates of the prevalence of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) among Alaska residents with schizophrenia and to evaluate the relation of SAD symptoms to symptoms of general depression, negative schizophrenia, and alcohol abuse. Nine (33%) of the subjects exceeded cut-off criteria for SAD. Assessment of depression supported the diagnostic classification of respondents who met cut-off criteria for SAD as depressed, but also supported conceptualizations of SAD as a syndrome separate from unipolar depression. Evaluation of negative symptoms of schizophrenia validated the divergence of SAD and depression symptoms from negative symptoms. Implications of this …
Organizational Communication And Culture In Female Predominated Workplaces, Sarah Rush Comstock
Organizational Communication And Culture In Female Predominated Workplaces, Sarah Rush Comstock
Communication
While equality of the sexes has still not been achieved, the ongoing struggle for parity has paved the way for an influx of females into workplaces. In many organizations this increase has resulted in a higher ratio of females to males. Offices that are predominated by on sex or the other create communication problems, attitudes, and ways of dealing with co-workers on an interpersonal level that organizations with a balance between males and females do not face. This study will explore the perspective of females working in gender predominant organizations, and also observations on organizational culture; intra-organizational communication; communicated support …
Organizational Culture And Meanings In Tension: An Analysis Of The Alaska Volcano Observatory, Shelly Lisa Worley
Organizational Culture And Meanings In Tension: An Analysis Of The Alaska Volcano Observatory, Shelly Lisa Worley
Communication
The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) is an organization that is responsible for observing volcanic activity in Alaska and surrounding regions. This organization has a great impact on the public and agencies in Alaska because it is responsible for ensuring the safety of many Alaskans, and to many people who live in neighboring regions. AVO is not only responsible for saving lives, but also responsible for notifying agencies that depend on this organization for volcanic crisis notification. This study is an ethnography of the Alaska Volcano Observatory and through interpretation of my data as research too, I provide a sense of …
Estimation Of Growing Season Length In Northern Alaska With Avhrr Ndvi Bi-Weekly Satellite Data, Heather Beth Goldman
Estimation Of Growing Season Length In Northern Alaska With Avhrr Ndvi Bi-Weekly Satellite Data, Heather Beth Goldman
Forest Sciences
Twice-monthly AVHRR-derived NDVI were used to estimate growing season length across Alaska, north of the Alaska Range. An algorithm, based on the ratio of NDVI to annual maximum NDVI for each pixel, was used to represent percent of maximum greenness for each composite period. Greenup and senescence commenced when NDVI values rose above and fell below a selected percent of maximum greenness. Six different percent of maximum greenness threshholds, ranging from 25 to 50 percent, were evaluated. This algorithm eliminates complications of landscape-specific NDVI thresholds and year-to-year variability. The algorithm was tested against 1) air temperature data from 23 weather …

Migratory Patterns Of Yukon River Inconnu As Determined With Otolith Microchemistry And Radio Telemetry, Randy J. Brown
Migratory Patterns Of Yukon River Inconnu As Determined With Otolith Microchemistry And Radio Telemetry, Randy J. Brown
Fisheries
Migratory patterns of Yukon River inconnu Stenodus leucichthys were evaluated using otolith aging and microchemical techniques and radio telemetry. Research was conducted each fall between 1997 and 1999, on inconnu captured at a study site 1,200 river km from the Bering Sea. Biological data were collected to establish maturity and spawning condition. Sagital otoliths were analyzed optically to determine age distribution, and microchemically to determine amphidromy. Inconnu were tagged with radio transmitters and located in upstream spawning destinations. Inconnu captured at the study site were uniformly large, mature fish preparing to spawn. Age estimates ranged from 7 to 28 years. …
