In this age of information technology, it is morally imperative that equal access to information via computer systems be afforded to people with disabilities. This paper addresses the problems that computer technology poses for students with disabilities and discusses what is needed to ensure equity of access, particularly in a university environment.

Do Inner-City, African-American Males Exhibit "Bad Attitudes" Toward Work?, Jill Littrell, Elizabeth Beck

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Many potential employers of inner-city African-American men believe that African-American men have poor work attitudes. The investigations reported here attempted to evaluate the veridicality of this assumption. The responses of African-American men who utilize a soup-kitchen were compared with college men on a variety of attitude measures, as well as on their reactions to a scenario about a man who worked for an unfair boss and quit in response. Generally, little support for the view that innercity, African-Americans men have a predilection to presume prejudice or unfairness, or to render a favorable evaluation of quitting under unfair conditions, was found.

Moral Education And Teachers’ Self-Perceptions: Novice Male Teachers In The Catholic High School, Aine Donovan

Journal of Catholic Education

This article describes a qualitative study of six Catholic high school teachers, all male and all relatively new to Catholic education. Each subject participated in six hours of ethnographic interviews, yielding a rich description of their self-perceptions, educational competence, and faith background. Teaching as a vocation and moral education emerged as important themes for these teachers and for future study.

With a call for integration commonly expected in liberal arts education, this article explores the philosophy of Bernard Lonergan. Highly specialized disciplines, as valuable as they are to preserving and expanding a professional knowledge base, can nonetheless lead to the extreme compartmentalization of education. This article offers a philosophical foundation on which to build a truly Catholic liberal arts education.

OBJECTIVE: This study was carried out to ascertain the prevalence of hypertension in our community with a view to forming a baseline and planning strategies for prevention and control. METHODS: A cross sectional study carried out by collecting data from randomly selected case notes of 3747 patients (1683 males and 2064 females), regarding age, sex, blood pressure measurements and whether or not they were on treatment for hypertension. RESULTS: The prevalence of hypertension in the total population was 3.1% (females 3.05% and males 2.67%). With regard to age group, the prevalence was highest in 65-74 years in both males and …

This thesis explores the relationship between homophobia and fear-of-intimacy in heterosexual college students, with a focus on gender differences. The study builds upon existing research suggesting that men often display higher levels of homophobia and fear-of-intimacy, potentially due to gender role socialization, cultural expectations, and psychosocial development patterns. Using Erikson's theory of psychosocial development and various social and psychological frameworks, the author hypothesizes that homophobia may act as a barrier to intimacy, especially in men.

It has been found that parotid glands secrete a factor into blood that stimulates dentinal fluid movement, which in turn, prevents the development of dental caries. This factor, designated as parotid hormone, has been isolated from porcine parotid glands and its partial amino acid sequence has been determined. This study was developed to isolate and identify the cDNA sequence for porcine parotid hormone.

Phytochemicals are naturally-occurring compounds found in plants, many of which are consumed as nutritional supplements by humans. Pycnogenol is a mixture of flavonoid compounds extracted from bark of pine trees (Pinus maritima) and is commercially available in several different pharmaceutical preparations as a free radical scavenger.

Since few scientific studies have documented the pharmacologic effects of pycnogenol, our objective was to characterize the biological activity of pycnogenol. Molecular chaperones play an integral role in the folding of most polypeptides in vivo, and protect proteins against aggregation when a cell is under stress. The GroESL proteins of Escherichia coli are the best characterized of the ringed chaperones, or chaperonins. Chaperonins of the eukaryotic cytoplasm interact with a limited number of polypeptides, whereas GroEL is promiscuous as it binds and mediates the folding of many polypeptides. Replacement resorption (RR) occurs following severe injury to the periodontal ligament (PDL). It has been suggested that inflammatory reactions precede RR. The purpose of this study was to examine and compare histologically the effect of topical application of two anti-inflammatory medications and stannous fluoride (SF) on the development of RR. Thirty-four roots of beagle dog mandibular 2nd, 3rd, and 4th premolars received root canal therapy. They were then extracted and left to bench dry for one hour. This study is [sic] introduces a new extension of Euclidean Distance Matrix Analysis (EDMA) as applied to growth prediction analysis. Using EDMA eliminates the presupposition of a set growth pattern, which is introduced by traditional superimposition techniques. When EDMA is extended to analyze prediction methodologies, using a non-age-matched growth sample, some shortcomings become evident. These involve bootstrapping techniques, relative difference in growth, and absence of clinical, real world measure. Many cancer patients experience adverse chemotherapy-related side effects. The present study examined whether the perception that one can control and effectively cope with her treatment for breast cancer mitigate against any nausea and vomiting that she may experience in anticipation of chemotherapy treatments. Seventy-five women with breast cancer completed the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale - Form C, the Krantz Health Opinion Survey, the Ways of Coping Scale - Revised, and the Morrow Assessment of Nausea and Emesis. As hypothesized, internal health locus of control was significantly positively related to positive reappraisal coping strategies. This relationship was moderated by …

Recently, several states have passed legislation allowing or directing state officials to impose treatment, sometimes referred to as chemical castration, on particular classes of sex offenders. Several other states have attempted to pass similar legislation. Such legislation raises multiple intricate issues including the efficacy of the treatment, the responsibilities of medical professionals implementing the provisions of the statutes, and the constitutionality of the statutes. Currently, yellow perch Perca flavescens stocking needs in South Dakota are met by intensive trap and transfer of juvenile and adult perch. The success of these stocking efforts is largely undocumented, primarily due to problems in distinguishing yellow perch produced within the recipient water body and stocked perch. We first developed a transfer-tank marking protocol to determine immersion duration and optimal concentration of oxytetracycline (OTC) hydrochloride needed to produce an effective mark. This study examined differences in learning styles between African-American and Caucasian students while also taking into consideration students' gender. Students in grade 9th through 12th grade completed the Silver-Hanson Learning Preference Inventory (Hanson, Silver & Gulkus, 1984). This inventory is a 125-item questionnaire, which assesses students' preferences for different learning conditions, modes, and areas of interest. The sample included the results of the Learning Style inventory obtained from 95 African-American students and 95 Caucasian-Students. This study found that there is substantial evidence that gender has an affect on learning style. However, this study found marginal evidence that ethnicity affects learning …

Interspecies transmission of the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs), or prion diseases, can result in the adaptation and selection of TSE strains with an expanded host range and increased virulence such as in the case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy and variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. To investigate TSE strain adaptation, we serially passaged a biological clone of transmissible mink encephalopathy (TME) into Syrian golden hamsters and examined the selection of distinct strain phenotypes and conformations of the disease-specific isoform of the prion protein (PrP^Sc). Parasites of the fathead minnow, Pimephales promelas, were examined in fish collected from Elk Creek (40.88534°N, 96.83366°W) and West Oak Creek (40.90821°N, 96.81432°W), Lancaster County, Nebraska. These two streams are part of the Salt Valley watershed and flow together approximately 2 km downstream from the collection sites to form Oak Creek. This study examined the extent to which the two tributaries constitute a continuous habitat with respect to fish hosts.
