Ecogeographic Aspects Of Greater Prairie-Chicken Leks In Southeastern Nebraska, Paul A. Johnsgard

An analysis of the distribution of 104 Greater Prairie-chicken leks in Pawnee and Johnson counties indicates that the birds favor using those mile-square sections having no more than two dwellings per section, ones that are located at least two miles from the nearest town, and at least a half-mile from the nearest lek. Relationships with the nearest water were not clear, but most leks were located at least a half-mile from it, perhaps reflecting a general avoidance of heavy cover during the display season.

Observations On The Biology Of The Antlion Genus Glenurus Hagen (Neuroptera: Myrmeleontidae), Lionel A. Stange

This New World genus contains nine described species classified in the Nemoleontini. Larvae have been found for five species (Miller and Stange, unpublished data). The larvae have only two mandibular teeth and the labial palpus has only 2 segments. These characters are unknown in other genera of the Nemoleontini. Larvae live in dry tree holes (Miller, R. and L. Myosides Seriehispidus Roelofs, An Asian Weevil New To The United States (Coleoptera, Curculionidae), Charles W. O'Brien

Myosides seriehispidus Roelofs, a small cryptic broadnosed weevil from Japan, is reported as established in the eastern U.S. since at least 1973. This nocturnal weevil has been collected most often from leaf litter using berleses. The genus and species are redescribed and placement in Kissinger's key to genera of North American weevils is indicated. Dorsal and lateral habitus photographs of this species are included.

A New Species Of Peckia (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) From Costa Rica, With A Note On P. Pexata (Wulp), Thomas Pape, Magnus Anderson

A new species of Peckia Robineau-Desvoidy is described from the coastal dry forest of Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica, viz., Peckia glyphis sp.n., and a key to the ten species of Peckia known from the area is provided. A lectotype is designated for Peckia pexata (Wulp, 1895) and intraspecific variation in male leg setosity and in the morphology of male terminalia are documented.

A complete listing of these taxa is provided, with published and new records from the state, synonyms, and type localities. Abstract:Taxonomy and distribution of the ectoparasitic insects of bats from Argentina, are reviewed. Seventeen species of Diptera (six of Nycteribiidae and eleven of Streblidae), six species of Siphonaptera (four of Ischnopsyllidae, one of Pulicidae, and one of Stephanocircidae), and seven species of Hemiptera (Polyctenidae) are known presently for Argentina. The information was obtained by reviewing the literature and collecting in the field between 1989 and 1998. The specimens collected in the field were compared with the type material deposited at the Field Museum of Natural History (CHNM).

Influence Of Habitat Use Patterns On Cooperative Breeding In The Brown-Headed Nuthatch, Albert Herb Jr., D. Brent Burt

Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society

We document the habitat use patterns of the Brown-headed Nuthatch (Sitta pusilla). We describe how its habitat use patterns contribute to ecological constraints that may maintain cooperative breeding in this species. Brown-headed Nuthatches are pine specialists. In particularly, Brown-headed Nuthatches forage primarily on the bark and cones in the top distal portions of mature pines. Breeding territories differ considerably in pine density. We suggest that differences in pine density are an indicator of habitat and territory quality. We predict that additional studies will document that helpers are more common on relatively small territories with high tree densities and in habitats …

There is considerable uncertainty surrounding the taxonomic relationship between Cynopterus sphinx and C. brachyotis, and the status of the many named forms within C. sphinx (Storz & Kunz 1999). Polymorphic microsatellite markers for cynopterine fruit bats would greatly aid efforts to elucidate species boundaries and genetic correlates of morphological variation within species. To assess levels of variation in C. sphinx and C. brachyotis, microsatellite genotypes were obtained for a total of 731 bats (620 C. sphinx and 111 C. brachyotis).

The effect of beta -adrenergic receptor blockade on retention in a mildly aversive passive-avoidance procedure was investigated. Rats were given passive-avoidance training-1 trial per day for 4 days-and were administered saline, the centrally and peripherally acting beta -adrenergic blocker propranolol (4 or 10 mg/kg ip), or the peripherally acting P-adrenergic blocker sotalol (4 or 10 mg/kg ip) immediately or 2 hr after the Ist trial. Enhanced retention occurred only with the higher dose (10 mg/kg) of propranolol and only when it was administered immediately after training. The enhanced retention produced by propranolol is discussed in terms of opposing, regionally specific …

This Article explores what nondiscrimination means in the context of intercollegiate athletics. After reviewing the Department of Education's controversial Title IX Policy Interpretation, it critically examines the analytical framework used in Title IX athletic cases and concludes that commonly made analogies to litigation under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act are inapt. A major part of the Article is an empirical study, looking first at gender equity plans written by institutions of higher education for the National Collegiate Athletic Association and then at data collected from more than 325 institutions pursuant to the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act. …

Identification And Characterization Of Zinc-Responsive Genes In Pseudomonas Fluorescens, Thomas L. Wilson

Masters Theses

Genes responsive to elevated concentrations of zinc were identified via transposon mutagenesis in the common soil bacterium, Pseudomonas fluorescens ATCC13525. Some of these genes were essential to maintain metal homeostasis in the bacterial cell. DNA sequences of the transposon-tagged genes were determined by DNA sequencing of arbitrary PCR products. DNA sequence analysis indicated that one gene was similar to P-type ATPases responsible for transporting metal ions out of the cell. The corresponding mutant was sensitive to zinc, cadmium, and lead indicating that this gene may be responsible for defending Pseudomonas fluorescens against these metal ions. A method to produce composites of hydroxyapatite (HA) with ZrO2 (Y-TZP) additions between 0 and 10 wt % at a low sinter temperature of 750 °C is presented. The method limits the amount of reaction between the HA and ZrO2. A ZrO2 loading level that would improve strength while limiting the decomposition of the HA is studied.

This study explores the socio-cultural history of a school for Native American students on the Crow Creek Sioux Reservation in central South Dakota. The case study places the school's history (1886-present) within the context of the historic interaction between environment, cultures, and social change on the Great Plains.

This work focuses on a Catholic school and the multi-dimensional students and staff who constitute its story. These individuals acted neither as perpetually passive students nor simplistically sinister administrators. Teenage pregnancy is a critical health indicator. Using a risk reduction model, this study examined the relationship between the characteristics o f the teenage mother i and her newborn. The research questions were: ( I) what risk factors are associated with poor birth outcomes, (2) is addressing each factor the best way to reduce the risk, and (3) has the overall risk changed as the birth rate has declined? Developmental, psychosocial and economic risks were identified as independent variables, while age and race were mediators.

This analytic variable study examined the potential differences that exist among male juvenile sexual offenders (JSOs), general offenders (GOs), and nonoffenders (NOs) on the emotional expressiveness variables of alexithymia and affective orientation, and three problematic behavior variables including self-defeating behavior, risk taking, and reckless behavior. It was hypothesized that JSOs and GOs would be statistically significantly different than NOs on all variables but not different from each other.

Biofilms are complex communities of microorganisms attached to surfaces or associated with interfaces. Despite the focus of modern microbiology research on pure culture, planktonic (free-swimming) bacteria, it is now widely recognized that most bacteria found in natural, clinical, and industrial settings persist in association with surfaces. Furthermore, these microbial communities are often composed of multiple species that interact with each other and their environment.
