Delinquency And Victimization Among Adolescents: An Examination Of The Relationship And Lifestyle Influences, Joy Eileen Livergood

This research examines the correlation between delinquency and victimization. Consideration is given to the lifestyle influences including the routine activities and demographic factors. Data from the 1997 Monitoring the Future data set are analyzed in an attempt to understand the extent of the relationship as well as the impact of various lifestyle activities and demographic factors. The study was guided by previous research examining the correlation between delinquency and victimization as well as the impact of lifestyle elements. Genomic Structure Of Murine Mitochondrial Dna Polymerase-Gamma., Justin L. Mott, Grace Denniger, Steve J. Zullo, H. Peter Zassenhaus

We have sequenced a genomic clone of the gene encoding the mouse mitochondrial DNA polymerase. The gene consists of 23 exons, which span approximately 13.2 kb, with exons ranging in size from 53 to 768 bp. All intron-exon boundaries conform to the GT-AG rule. By comparison with the human genomic sequence, we found remarkable conservation of the gene structure; the intron-exon borders are in almost identical locations for the 22 introns. The 5' upstream region contains approximately 300 bp of homology between the mouse and human sequences that presumably contain the promoter element. This region lacks any obvious TATA domain …

Blood Lead Level In The Jordanian Population, Malek A. Dabbas, Mohammad A. Al-Zoubi

OBJECTIVE: To determine the blood lead level in the non-occupationally exposed Jordanian population as a baseline for comparative studies. METHODS: Seven hundred and forty six blood samples were collected and analyzed using Graphic Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry. A representative sample for the Jordanian community was selected. RESULTS: The arithmetic mean for blood lead level in the whole sample was 1.96 µg/d1 which was lower than the other means determined by international studies. CONCLUSION: The blood lead level among the Jordanian population was found to be less than the levels in other countries, this may be partly explained by the low …

Halipegus eschi n. sp. is described from the esophagus of Rana vaillanti from Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica. The new species differs from other known species of Halipegus on the basis of relative testis size, lateral extent of the uterus, vitelline follicle arrangement, egg size, and polar filament length.

While previous research has demonstrated the importance of studying adolescence, few studies have explored the determinants of Mexican-American adolescent stress. Studies have shown that individual differences exist among adolescents that help determine adolescent stress. Individual differences such as family structure and socioeconomic status among Mexican-American adolescents may help to better understand adolescent stress. This study investigated incidence of Mexican-American adolescent stress in a public high school and middle school composed of 2,686 students from the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District. Determinants Of Health Promoting Behaviors In Older Adults, Kay Wallace

The purpose of this study was to examine relationships between Health Locus of Control, selected demographic variables, and the Health Promoting Behaviors of Physical Activity and Nutrition in older persons. Pender’s (1996) Health Promotion Model (HPM) was used as the conceptual framework to guide this study.

The sample consisted of 48 subjects, aged 65 years and older, who resided in senior living centers. The subjects were predominantly Caucasian (94%) and female (81%). Research instruments were self-administered questionnaires that consisted of demographic data, the Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile II, and the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale.

This article examines the value and usefulness of expanding a particular approach to service learning in an educational setting. As a result of participating in a graduate seminar that combined cultural studies with service learning, reflecting on involvement in a service project, and a careful reading of relevant literature, the authors advocate for a more critical engagement with the reality of overwhelming social injustice. Moreover, the authors suggest a four-step framework (critical service learning), which is informed by both cultural studies and critical pedagogy. Finally, the authors argue for the adaptation of this framework into the school curriculum-thereby providing students …

To assess the influence of orbital-scale variations on late Oligocene to early Miocene climate and ocean chemistry, high-resolution (similar to 5 kyr) benthic foraminiferal carbon and oxygen isotope and percent coarse fraction time series were constructed for Ocean Drilling Program site 929 on Ceara Rise in the western equatorial Atlantic. These time series exhibit pervasive low- to high-frequency variability across a 5-Myr interval (20.5-25.4 Ma). The records also reveal several large-scale secular variations including two positive (similar to 1.6 parts per thousand) oxygen isotope excursions at 22.95 and 21.1 Ma, suggestive of large but brief glacial maxima (Mi-l and Mi-la …

Objective: Borderline epithelial ovarian tumors not uncommonly pose a great difficulty to surgical pathologists as morphologically they may show very similar features as those of malignant epithelial tumors except invasion. However it is important to separate these from their invasive counterparts because of their superior prognosis. Recently, attention has been focussed on the prognostic value of flow cytometric analysis of DNA ploidy in borderline epithelial ovarian tumors. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether flow cytometric analysis of cellular DNA content acts as a useful adjunct to the histopathological diagnosis of borderline malignancy.

The timing of offspring release is a fundamental turning point in the life history of any organism. It represents the end to many of the most costly forms of parental care (e.g., provisioning of nutrients for developing eggs and zygotes) and the beginning of an independent life for the offspring. Generally temporal variation in this event is attributed to a variety of physiological and evolutionary trade-offs. Here we examine the retention of offspring in the freshwater clam Sphaerium striatinum Lamarck.
