The Personal Information Protection And Electronic Documents Act: A Lost Opportunity To Democratize Canada's "Technological Society", Tina Piper

Bill C-6, more recently known as the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, is promoted by the Canadian government as privacy legislation to protect Canadians' personal information. This paper explores that characterization and concludes that it is inaccurate and misleading. The problems that motivated a response by Parliament are the proliferation and commercial importance of personal information, concerns Canadians have about its uncontrolled use by the private sector and the inadequacy of existing law to address those concerns. However, the Act has not responded to these problems. There are several reasons for this, primarily the disproportionate and antidemocratic importance …

Shame In Adolescence: A Pilot-Study Utilizing The Thurston-Cradock Test, Renee K.P. Botero

This study was designed to contribute evidence for the validity of Thurston-Cradock Test (of Shame) and to contribute to the growing set of empirical studies relating to shame dynamics in adolescence. The Thurston-Cradock Test is a newly published projective instrument for assessing shame dynamics. Its use had previously been limited to adult populations. Subjects were research volunteers at adjudicated and a non-adjudicated private high schools ranging in age from 14-18 years. The adjudicated group included 31 subjects, 15 male and 16 female, while the private school group included 21 subjects, 11 male and 10 female. A comparison of means using …

Atrazine Induction Of Cytochrome P450 In Chironomus Tentans Larvae, Francisca Miota, Blair Siegfried, Michael E. Scharf, Michael J. Lydy

Cytochrome P450-dependent aldrin epoxidation was characterized in third instar larvae of the aquatic midge, Chironomus tentans. Optimal in vitro assay conditions for the epoxidase were pH 7.6 and 31°C. Activity was linear up to 40 min of incubation time and 0.5 mg microsomal protein per incubation. The activity was concentrated in the mic rosomal fraction of whole body homogenates and was NADPH-dependent. The effect of atrazine exposure on aldrin epoxidase was measured to determine if this herbicide induces cytochrome P450-dependent activity. Comparisons of control and atrazine-exposed midges indicated increased epoxidase activity as a result of atrazine exposure, and a …

OBJECTIVE: To study the frequency, type, and severity of adverse reactions to intravenous immunoglobulin infusions and possible preventable measures. METHODS: We prospectively studied the frequency, type, and severity of adverse reactions in 104 intravenous immunoglobulin infusions (IntraglobinTMF) given to 13 patients suffering from several immunodeficiency and autoimmune diseases over 15 months in King Hussein Medical Center. The severity of the reaction was classified as mild, moderate and severe. Transmission of infections such as human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis B, and C was monitored. RESULTS: The total number of reactions documented was 16 out of 104 (14.5%) infusions and all resolved without …

This essay provides a selective overview of the Canadian historiography on family. The roots of family history not only extend backwards much further than the “new social history,” bom of the tumultuous 1960s, they are buried deep in several other disciplines, most notably sociology, anthropology, and demography, whose practitioners were concerned as much with the historical process of family change as with the state of families contemporary to their times. I consider how pioneering social scientists, by grappling with the family's relationship to structural change, historicized early 20th century family studies and offered up many of the questions, concepts, theories, …

Varying The Abundance Of O Antigen In Rhizobium Etli And Its Effect On Symbiosis With Phaseolus Vulgaris, K. Dale Noel, Lennart Scott Forsberg, Russell W. Carlson

Judged by migration of its lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in gel electrophoresis, the O antigen of Rhizobium etli mutant strain CE166 was apparently of normal size. However, its LPS sugar composition and staining of the LPS bands after electrophoresis indicated that the proportion of its LPS molecules that possessed O antigen was only 40% of the wild-type value. Its LPS also differed from the wild type by lacking quinovosamine (2-amino-2,6-dideoxyglucose). Both of these defects were due to a single genetic locus carrying a Tn5 insertion. The deficiency in O-antigen amount, but not the absence of quinovosamine, was suppressed by transferring into …

Is Reproduction By Tree Swallows (Tachycineta Bicolor) Cost-Free?, Michael T. Murphy

We manipulated brood sizes of Tree Swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) in 1996 and 1997 to test for the existence of intra- and intergenerational costs of reproduction. Modal clutch size was six eggs, but experimental brood sizes ranged from two to nine young. Nestling starvation was higher in 1996 (and dependent on brood size) than in 1997, but in both years enlargement of brood size resulted in increased productivity. Nestling mass near fledging was negatively correlated with brood size, but tarsus length and wing chord were not. Food deliveries by parents increased steadily between broods of two to six young but then …
