Univercity News (2000-04-03)

UniverCity News, 1998-2001

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Evaluation Of Selected Scales Of The Revised Neo Personality Inventory (Neo Pi-R) And The State -Trait Anger Expression Inventory (Staxi) With A College Student Population., John Raeburn Reid

Theses and Dissertations

It has been noted that some individuals seem to be chronically angry and hostile but experience little dysfunction in their lives because of that anger. On the other hand, other individuals experience high levels of anger around certain stimuli, experience dysfunction, and display problematic behaviors. Further, if an anger assessment is indicated and one of two such assessing instruments must be chosen, it would seem to be important to know which is most appropriate. In this study dimensional anger is investigated through the use of the Revised Neo Personality Inventory (NEO PI-R) and The State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI). Selected …

Applying Science To Public Policy: The Context Of The Surgeon General's Report On Mental Health, Richard Hegner

National Health Policy Forum

Intended to provide public policy context for the December 1999 Surgeon General's Report on Mental Health, this background paper discusses the historic skepticism about the efficacy of treatment of mental illness in this country, insurance practices that have discriminated against mental illness and the reasons for them, the disproportionate share of mental health funding provided by government sources such as Medicaid and state general revenues, the role of state and local public government as providers of catastrophic coverage for mental illness, the cascading cost-shifting game in mental health finance, obstacles to needed treatment (including popular attitudes toward mental illness), the …

Drugs In The Heartland: Methamphetamine Use In Rural Nebraska, Denise C. Herz Apr 2000

Drugs In The Heartland: Methamphetamine Use In Rural Nebraska, Denise C. Herz

United States Public Health Resources

A decade ago, methamphetamine was commonly believed to be limited to the West Coast and a few other, isolated areas. Recent evidence shows that substantial proportions of arrestees in several large urban areas of the West and Midwest are using the drug. Increasingly, the problem is coming to the attention of policymakers and law enforcement nationwide. (See “The Federal Government Responds.”)
Methamphetamine has generated concern because of its ready availability and the severity of its effects on the user. It is cheaper than cocaine, it is easy to manufacture, it produces a longer lasting “high,” and its short- and long-term …

African-American And White Female Homicide Offenders: Women Who Kill Intimate Partners Versus Non-Intimate Partners In Chicago Between 1980-1995, Shauntey James

Dissertations

The research that examines female homicide offenders goes little further than investigating whether or not offenders were previously victimized by those whom they kill. This research project is designed to contribute to this extant body of literature and theory in two ways. The first is to add and provide a comprehensive picture of African-American and white female homicide offenders in intimate versus non-intimate relationships in homicidal events. The second manner of contribution lies in the testing of a creative and integrative theoretical model. This model addresses race, underclass context, alcohol use, social disorganization and prior arrest record of female homicide …
