Concepts Of Science Fiction In Graphic Design: Concepts Of Science Fiction Applied To Graphic Design Problem Solving, Nawarat Teeraprasert May 2000

Concepts Of Science Fiction In Graphic Design: Concepts Of Science Fiction Applied To Graphic Design Problem Solving, Nawarat Teeraprasert

Theses

This thesis examines how the futuristic ideas in science fiction literature can be applied to graphic design. The paradigm that creates the connection between mind and emotion in science fiction, such as recurring images, pattern, space and time can be described as signifiers, the triggers of imagination, which can also function in graphic design as object orientation. By combining elements and models within science fiction systems with the theory of perception, a new approach to graphic design problem solving will be created.

Typophoto: The Visual Dimensionality, Kitae Kim May 2000

Typophoto: The Visual Dimensionality, Kitae Kim

Theses

This thesis will first document how both typography and photography have merged into a pure form of communication: typophoto. Simultaneously, the study will refine the visual parameters for understanding the concept of typophoto through an examination of the works of a number of designers, design movements and visual theories. The final goal of this thesis study will be to explore a new interpretation of typophoto and to extend its use in the new digital era. In 1925, the designer, painter, photographer and film maker Laszl6 Moholy-Nagy first mentioned the concept or theory of typophoto in Malerei Photographic Film. Typophoto was …

The Effects Of Interviewer Self-Monitoring On Male Appearance Discrimination In Employment Decisions, Charles Mcdowell May 2000

The Effects Of Interviewer Self-Monitoring On Male Appearance Discrimination In Employment Decisions, Charles Mcdowell

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This research examined the effects of appearance discrimination toward men as regards employment decisions and the extent to which the degree of interviewer selfmonitoring influences these decisions. Past research has indicated that discrimination does indeed occur for women, but no empirical research has been conducted on male discrimination in which hair length has been manipulated. Specifically, length of hair (shoulder length, approximately 1 inch, and balding) was manipulated for potential job applicants. These conditions were examined across different types of jobs (traditionally conservative, neutral, and traditionally liberal). Several hypotheses are offered, with most focused on the concept that those scoring …

An Examination Of Local Newspaper Photographs Of The Wounded Knee Occupation Of 1973, Anne Katherine Schmidt May 2000

An Examination Of Local Newspaper Photographs Of The Wounded Knee Occupation Of 1973, Anne Katherine Schmidt

Student Work

In February of 1973, the American Indian Movement occupied the small village of Wounded Knee. AIM’s purpose was twofold, to increase awareness of the plight of Native Americans in the area and to remove the Tribal Chairman, Richard Wilson. AIM used the historic site of Wounded Knee and stereotypical images of Indians in hopes of gaining national attention through the media. AIM thought this media attention was necessary in order to bring about change. Portrayals of Native Americans in the media have for the most part been stereotypical. Evidence of this can be found in the extensive research on Native …

Prints And Printmakers In Viceregal Mexico City, 1600-1800, Kelly Donahue-Wallace Apr 2000

Prints And Printmakers In Viceregal Mexico City, 1600-1800, Kelly Donahue-Wallace

Art & Art History ETDs

Although woodcuts and engravings documented viceregal life and reflected Mexican artistic achievement, they are generally absent from colonial art historiography. This lacuna is the result of persistent biases affecting print scholarship worldwide against art tainted by multiplicity, mechanical interference, labor divisions, and popular audiences. The near total lack of published information concerning the artists and their efforts has also discouraged research on Mexican prints. This dissertation is, therefore, a documentary study of the printmaking profession in the viceregal capital between 1600 and 1800. Its goal is to examine how colonial block-cutters and engravers trained, worked, and understood their art.
