A Mediational Coping Model Of Sociopersonal Well-Being And Quality Of Life, William Burton Disch Jan 2000

A Mediational Coping Model Of Sociopersonal Well-Being And Quality Of Life, William Burton Disch

Open Access Dissertations

The current study assessed relationships between composite and latent measures of stress, coping, and sociopersonal well-being and quality of life. A latent variable mediational coping model was proposed and it was hypothesized that coping would be a significant mediator between measures of stress and measures of quality of life. The process of mediational coping is theoretically explained using a pragmatic and teleological application of need motivation and goal directed behavior (Maslow, 1968, 1971), and behavioral specificity, delay of gratification, and context (Mischel, 1973, 1986). Social learning and humanistic concepts are synthesized within a discussion of ontological, epistemological, and methodological congruence …

Women, Wilderness, And Everyday Life: A Documentation Of The Connection Between Wilderness Recreation And Women's Everyday Lives, William T. Borrie, Sarah L. Pohl, Michael E. Patterson Jan 2000

Women, Wilderness, And Everyday Life: A Documentation Of The Connection Between Wilderness Recreation And Women's Everyday Lives, William T. Borrie, Sarah L. Pohl, Michael E. Patterson

Society and Conservation Faculty Publications

Past research provides evidence that outdoor recreation can aid in our deconstruction of gender and gender stereotyping (Henderson, Bialeschki, Shaw, & Freysinger, 1996). Outcomes from recreational experiences can transfer into other realms of daily life, resulting in a heightened sense of empowerment and social change for women (Henderson, 1996). Scarce, however, are conceptual frameworks for understanding how and why meaningful changes take place when women experience the outdoors. In examining the connection between wilderness recreation and social change for women, data were collected from twenty-four qualitative interviews with women who recreate in wilderness. Analysis indicated wilderness recreation can influence women's …

Examining Winter Visitor Use In Yellowstone National Park, Mae A. Davenport, Wayne A. Freimund, William T. Borrie, Robert E. Manning, William A. Valliere, Benjamin Wang

Society and Conservation Faculty Publications

This research was designed to assist the managers of Yellowstone National Park (YNP) in their decision making about winter visitation. The focus of this report is on winter use patterns and winter visitor preferences. It is the author’s hope that this information will benefit both the quality of winter experiences and the stewardship of the park resources. This report addresses three fundamental questions: 1) Who are the visitors to YNP and why did they visit? 2) What are the characteristics of the winter visit and how do visitors travel within the park 3) What are the visitor evaluations of current …

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder : Developments In The Last Decade Concerning Causes And Treatments, Phyllis Damgaard Jan 2000

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder : Developments In The Last Decade Concerning Causes And Treatments, Phyllis Damgaard

Graduate Research Papers

The last ten years have brought major advances in the fields of medicine and technology, advances that have illuminated many of the dark comers of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This article seeks to pull together those illuminating advances, condensing the voluminous information available into comprehensive, but readable, pages. The causes of the disorder are discussed from both the scientific and psychological/social perspectives. The controversy resulting from medicating so many, so young is an integral part of this country's interest in ADHD, due largely to coverage by the popular media.

Research concerning successful treatment strategies is also discussed. Medication, behavior …

Tenure Impediments For Women Professors, Mary A. Traetow Jan 2000

Tenure Impediments For Women Professors, Mary A. Traetow

Graduate Research Papers

Women have long been struggling for equality in the tenured ranks of academia. The rigid tenure system has historically sanctioned rules for all who wish to enter. Research into this persistent inequity has focused on the "chilly" structure of universities (Blum, 1991) and on the question of women's ability to produce scholarship (Cole & Zuckerman, 1987). However, gender related issues as possible impeding factors for women professors seeking tenure have not been researched fully. The research focus is on how women's issues can be detrimental to the tenure climb of women professors. The paper will begin with a literature review …

Diversity In The College Curriculum : Overview Of The Literature, Ruben J. Carrion Jan 2000

Diversity In The College Curriculum : Overview Of The Literature, Ruben J. Carrion

Graduate Research Papers

The colleges and universities in the United States that have adopted a proactive commitment to diversity in the curriculum have done so because they understand how their central mission is linked with the future of a diverse society. They are aware that, in the new millennium, most new jobs in the economy require a postsecondary education, and women and racial/ethnic minorities compose a majority of the workforce. One result of this awareness is the transformation taking place at many institutions that links diversity in the curriculum with the development of new teaching practices and learning practices.

This review of the …

Distance Perception: A Comparison Of In-Class And Distance-Learning Psychology Of Perception Classes, Greg C. Elvers, Donald J. Polzella Jan 2000

Distance Perception: A Comparison Of In-Class And Distance-Learning Psychology Of Perception Classes, Greg C. Elvers, Donald J. Polzella

Psychology Faculty Publications

Fifty students were randomly assigned to take a perception class either in a traditional lecture or in a distance-learning format in which the students attended class only to take tests. The results failed to suggest that the students in the distance-learning condition performed differently in the course than the lecture students. There were differences in what the distance-learning and the lecture students found useful and what they disliked about the course. These findings could be used to help design better distance-learning courses.

Single-Sex High School Choice And African-American Girls Why Do African-American Girls Choose And Stay At A Single-Sex High School?, Gabrielle Dobel Jan 2000

Single-Sex High School Choice And African-American Girls Why Do African-American Girls Choose And Stay At A Single-Sex High School?, Gabrielle Dobel

Education | Print Theses

The aim of this study was to investigate the choice of a single-sex school for African American high school girls and their families. Additionally, their reasons for staying at the school were also examined. Six African American seniors and three of their mothers were interviewed. All girls attend a single-sex high school in the East Bay Area of Northern California. An extensive literature review was compiled as well. Tire literature review focused on sexism in coeducational learning environments, experiences in single-sex schools and choosing a single-sex school. Results indicated that in most cases, the parents in fact chose the single-sex …

Alone You Are Nobody, Together We Float: The Manuela Ramos Movement, Judith Bruce, Debbie Rogow

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Quality/Calidad/Qualité, a publication of the Population Council, highlights examples of clinical and educational programs which bring a strong commitment, as well as innovative and thoughtful approaches, to the issue of quality care in sexual and reproductive health. The series is based on the philosophy that women and their partners have a fundamental right to respectful treatment, information, choice, and follow-up from reproductive health care providers. This issue discusses improving women’s health and well being through a range of empowerment strategies in rural Peru.

Managing Population-Environment Systems: Problems Of Institutional Design, Geoffrey Mcnicoll Jan 2000

Managing Population-Environment Systems: Problems Of Institutional Design, Geoffrey Mcnicoll

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

In population–environment systems human activity is inherently part of the system rather than something to be minimized in order to maintain or restore “natural” environmental conditions. Issues arising in managing such systems are discussed in this paper. The system’s boundaries must be identified, defining its human participants and its ecological content. Procedures for monitoring demographic and environmental change in the system must be set up and consensus must be reached on how to evaluate that change.

Unmet Need For Family Planning In Developing Countries And Implications For Population Policy [Arabic], John B. Casterline, Steven W. Sinding Jan 2000

Unmet Need For Family Planning In Developing Countries And Implications For Population Policy [Arabic], John B. Casterline, Steven W. Sinding

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Unmet need for family planning has been a core concept in international population discourse for several decades. In this paper we reevaluate its utility. We review the history of unmet need and the development of increasingly refined methods of its empirical measurement. We then turn to the main questions that have been raised about unmet need during the past decade, some of which concern the validity of the concept and others its role in the post-ICPD environment. The discussion draws heavily on empirical research conducted during the 1990s, much of it localized, in-depth studies combining quantitative and qualitative methodologies, that …

Greater Investments In Children Through Women's Empowerment: A Key To Demographic Change In Pakistan?, Valerie L. Durrant, Zeba Sathar Jan 2000

Greater Investments In Children Through Women's Empowerment: A Key To Demographic Change In Pakistan?, Valerie L. Durrant, Zeba Sathar

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Women’s status has received considerable attention as a significant factor in demographic behavior and outcomes in South Asia however, little research has addressed the links between women’s status and their investments in children. In this paper, we empirically investigate how women’s status on multiple levels is associated with demographic outcomes. Using data from the Pakistan Status of Women and Fertility Survey in rural Punjab, we confirm that empowered women, or those with higher status, are better able to make positive investments in their children, thus increasing their children’s chances of survival during infancy and increasing their likelihood of ever attending …

Adolescent Pregnancy And Parenthood In South Africa, Carol E. Kaufman, Thea De Wet, Jonathan Stadler Jan 2000

Adolescent Pregnancy And Parenthood In South Africa, Carol E. Kaufman, Thea De Wet, Jonathan Stadler

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

South Africa’s total fertility rate is estimated to be one of the lowest in sub-Saharan Africa, less than 3.0 births per woman nationally and declining. At the same time, adolescent childbearing levels remain high more than 30 percent of 19-year-old girls are reported to have given birth at least once. Using evidence from focus groups conducted in urban and rural areas in South Africa with young black women and men, and with the parents of teenage mothers, we consider the experience of early parenthood. Specifically, the analysis explores four aspects of teenage childbearing as it relates to key transitions into …

Spatial Variation In Contraceptive Use In Bangladesh: Looking Beyond The Borders, Sajeda Amin, Alaka Malwade Basu, Rob Stephenson Jan 2000

Spatial Variation In Contraceptive Use In Bangladesh: Looking Beyond The Borders, Sajeda Amin, Alaka Malwade Basu, Rob Stephenson

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This paper tries to promote a more complete understanding of social change by analyzing spatial patterns of contraceptive use in Bangladesh and the contiguous state of West Bengal in India. The paper takes it’s cue from earlier analysis which found strong evidence of higher contraceptive prevalence in districts of Bangladesh that border Bengali speaking districts on India, as well as from analysis of fertility decline in historical Europe where language played a critical role. Using multilevel analysis to control for variations in individual and household level correlates, mapping districts that deviate considerably from their regional averages, the analysis highlights an …

Schooling Opportunities For Girls As A Stimulus For Fertility Change In Rural Pakistan, Zeba Sathar, Cynthia B. Lloyd, Cem Mete, Minhaj Ul Haque Jan 2000

Schooling Opportunities For Girls As A Stimulus For Fertility Change In Rural Pakistan, Zeba Sathar, Cynthia B. Lloyd, Cem Mete, Minhaj Ul Haque

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This paper tests Caldwell’s mass schooling hypothesis in the context of rural Pakistan. His hypothesis was that the onset of the fertility transition is closely linked to the achievement of “mass formal schooling” of boys and girls. Punjab and Northwest Frontier Province (NWFP) were selected for this study because they appear to be on the leading edge of the demographic transition-a transition that has only recently begun-as suggested by rapid recent increases in contraceptive practice. The study covered a range of rural villages or communities with very different socioeconomic and schooling conditions in order to examine the effects of both …
