Abusive Relationships: Hidden Crimes, Neidra V. Banton

Theses

Domestic violence is a crime, and the first step toward addressing the problem is through communication. Making society aware that there is a problem starts the process. Once communication of the problem is known then education is the next step. Educating society and all individuals affected by domestic violence whether as a victim or as a community helper is crucial toward stopping the crime.

Research of this social problem comprises the first three chapters of the graduate paper. Chapter one addresses the thoughts and reasons behind the belief that domestic violence is criminal through the research gathered from the social …

Conceptual Clarification And Policy-Related Science: The Case Of Chemical Hormesis, Kevin C. Elliott

Faculty Publications

This paper examines the epistemological warrant for a toxicological phenomenon known as chemical hormesis. First, it argues that conceptual confusion contributes significantly to current disagreements about the status of chemical hormesis as a biological hypothesis. Second, it analyzes seven distinct concepts of chemical hormesis, arguing that none are completely satisfactory. Finally, it suggests three ramifications of this analysis for ongoing debates about the epistemological status of chemical hormesis. This serves as a case study supporting the value of philosophical methodologies such as conceptual clarification for addressing contemporary scientific disputes, including policy-related scientific disputes that may be heavily influencedby social and …

Tribes As Rich Nations, Raymond Cross

Faculty Law Review Articles

This article critiques the contemporary doctrine of Indian tribal self-determination thirty years after its inception in President Richard M. Nixon's famed 1970 Indian Message to Congress.

The first part focuses on the three most prominent strategies for tribal self-determination: 1) tribal strategy that seeks to "morph" their inherent and reserved sovereign powers into tribal regulatory powers that are effective throughout Indian Country; 2) tribal strategy that seeks to develop and assert economic sovereignty over their lands, resources, and commercial relationships as a means of revitalizing Indian Country; and 3) tribal strategy that seeks to reassert traditional cultural and religious beliefs …

Leadership Reconsidered: Engaging Higher Education In Social Change, Alexander W. Astin, Helen S. Astin

Higher Education

This book was prepared over a period of two years. Most of us have worked together previously as members of an advisory committee for “College Age Youth,” a W.K. Kellogg Foundation initiative to develop leadership abilities in college undergraduates at 31 institutions. That program demonstrated that colleges and universities can provide highly effective environments for the development of future leaders (Zimmerman-Oster & Burkhardt, 1999).

Intergenerational, Community-Based Learning And Science Education, James J. Gallagher, Kathleen Hogan Jan 2000

Intergenerational, Community-Based Learning And Science Education, James J. Gallagher, Kathleen Hogan

Intergenerational

In the typical mode of formal schooling, adults and youngsters interact within boundaries of clearly defined roles in which teachers teach and students learn. An alternative format is one in which not only adults teach children, but children teach adults, as multiple generations work together on a topic of common concern to their community. Evidence of the benefits of an intergenerational, community-based approach to science education is emerging in various parts of the world.

New Efforts To Engage Youth In Legislative Advocacy, Wendy Schaetzel Lesko

Civic Engagement

The National Secretaries of State recent report confirms earlier findings that more Americans feel disconnected from government. The Council for Excellence in Government warns that "if each new generation continued to form a weaker attachment to government than the one before, the country would fairly soon find that only a small minority of citizens was connected to and involved with government." Concerted efforts are underway to test new approaches to entice young people to participate in the public policy arena at local, state, and national levels. A snapshot follows of a few promising initiatives along with some pointers on how …
