Intimate Partner Violence Among Men And Women In South Carolina, 1998, Ann L. Coker, Christina Derrick, Julia L. Lumpkin, Robert Oldendick, R H. Potter Jan 2000

Intimate Partner Violence Among Men And Women In South Carolina, 1998, Ann L. Coker, Christina Derrick, Julia L. Lumpkin, Robert Oldendick, R H. Potter

CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles

Few studies provide population-based estimates of intimate partner violence (IPV) for men and women, especially at the state level. IPV may result in adverse health effects for victims and perpetrators (1-3). To estimate the lifetime incidence of IPV by type of violence (e.g., physical, sexual, and perceived emotional abuse) and to explore demographic correlates of reporting IPV among men and women, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control and the University of South Carolina conducted a population-based random-digit-dialed telephone survey of adults in the state. This report summarizes the results of the survey, which indicated that approximately 25% …

The Use Of Animals In Higher Education: Problems, Alternatives, & Recommendations, Jonathan Balcombe Jan 2000

The Use Of Animals In Higher Education: Problems, Alternatives, & Recommendations, Jonathan Balcombe

eBooks

Despite recent advances in technology and increasing societal concern for animals, animals continue to be exploited and killed in large numbers so that students can learn about their structure and function. Dissection may not be without its merits from an educational standpoint, if well implemented, but it appears from student surveys that it usually is not. When one considers the associated costs—animal suffering and death in the supply trade, disruption of wild animal populations, messages that tend to undermine rather than reinforce respect for life and concern for others, rising costs of animal carcasses (as compared with alternatives with longer …

Wetland Manipulation In The Yalahau Region Of The Northern Maya Lowlands, Scott L. Fedick, Bethany A. Morrison, B. J. Andersen, S. Boucher, J. C. Acosta, Jennifer P. Mathews Jan 2000

Wetland Manipulation In The Yalahau Region Of The Northern Maya Lowlands, Scott L. Fedick, Bethany A. Morrison, B. J. Andersen, S. Boucher, J. C. Acosta, Jennifer P. Mathews

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Research

Manipulation of wetlands for agricultural purposes by the ancient Maya of southern Mexico and Central America has been a subject of much research and debate since the 1970s. Evidence for wetland cultivation systems, in the form of drained or channelized fields, and raised planting platforms, has been restricted primarily to the southern Maya Lowlands. New research in the Yalahau region of Quintana Roo, Mexico, has recorded evidence for wetland manipulation in the far northern lowlands, in the form of rock alignments that apparently functioned to control water movement and soil accumulation in seasonally inundated areas. Nearby ancient settlements date primarily …

Perceived Conditions Of Confinement: A National Evaluation Of Juvenile Boot Camps And Traditional Facilities., Gaylene Armstrong, Doris Layton Mackenzie, Angela Gover, Ojmarrh Mitchell

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

In a national study of juvenile correctional facilities, the perceived environment of 22 juvenile boot camps was compared to the perceived environment of 22 traditional facilities. Self-report surveys completed by 4,121 juveniles recorded information on demographics, risk factors, and perceptions of the facility's environment. Compared to juveniles in traditional correctional facilities, boot camp residents consistently perceived the environment as significantly more controlled, active, and structured, and as having less danger from other residents. Boot camp juveniles also perceived the environment as providing more therapeutic and transitional programming. Overall, from the perspective of the juveniles, boot camps appear to provide a …

An Investigation Into The Impact That Witnessing Or Experiencing Childhood Violence Has On Adult Women, Jennifer Anne Hochdoerfer Jan 2000

An Investigation Into The Impact That Witnessing Or Experiencing Childhood Violence Has On Adult Women, Jennifer Anne Hochdoerfer

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This paper examined the relation between witnessing or experiencing childhood violence and its impact on adult women’s criminal and/or violent acts, and their attitudes towards violence. It was hypothesized that women who committed criminal and/or violent acts would significantly differ in witnessing or experiencing childhood violence than those who did not commit criminal and/or violent acts. Further, it was also hypothesized that attitudes towards violence would also be positively correlated with having witnessed or experienced violence as a child. Finally, it was also hypothesized that women who committed criminal and/or violent acts would have significantly different attitudes towards violence than …

Panelist (Symposium: The Second Amendment), David S. Yassky Jan 2000

Panelist (Symposium: The Second Amendment), David S. Yassky

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

To understand the Second Amendment and what the Founders who wrote it were trying to do, you have to understand the conceptual framework that they were working in. And that conceptual framework is based on two concepts regarding the military: the concept of the army and the concept of the militia.

The Second Amendment is about how the military power of the United States should be organized. It grew out of one of the most pretentious issues faced by the Philadelphia Convention, which was: what military power should they give this new Federal Government? They're sitting down to write the …

Cultural Resistance To Global Governance, Joel Richard Paul Jan 2000

Cultural Resistance To Global Governance, Joel Richard Paul

Michigan Journal of International Law

This article maps out the terrain in which state actors and legal scholars make claims premised on a cultural exception to justify derogating from international legal norms. The author’s aim is to understand why some of these claimed cultural practices displace international legal norms, while other practices are dismissed as violating international legal norms. Part II will examine this discourse in relation to the rights of women and sexual minorities. This article will show that the international community generally regards gender norms as cultural and the international legal norm of gender equality usually defers to national cultural practices. Part III …

Resisting Globalization: Notes On The Seattle Uprising, Steven Pfaff

Sociology Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"The world seems to have been startled by recent events in Seattle. Between November 29th and December 3rd the city was gripped by unexpectedly powerful protests against the World Trade Organization meeting in the city. By now the conflict and chaos into which the conference descended - both in the streets outside the Washington State Convention Center and within it - are widely acknowledged. Not only did the WTO fail to agree upon an agenda for the next round of international trade liberalization and left the city in frustration, but Seattle presented a picture of urban protest rarely seen since …

Predictors Of Academic Success In The University Of North Dakota Master Of Physical Therapy Program, Sherry Sisneros Jan 2000

Predictors Of Academic Success In The University Of North Dakota Master Of Physical Therapy Program, Sherry Sisneros

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Due to the fact that the number of positions available in the University of North Dakota's Physical Therapy program is few yet the number of qualified applicants is many, the admissions committee has the responsibility to be selective in their process to ensure the most qualified students are admitted. In order to determine the most qualified students, one needs to determine the possible variables that predict not only academic, but clinical success as well.

Data was gathered from 145 students who attended the UND-PT program with admit years of1991-1995. Traditional descriptive and analytical statistics were utilized to describe applicants, outcomes, …

The Perceptions Of Male And Female Western Australian Adolescents In Relation To Body Image And Smoking, Mary Edwards Jan 2000

The Perceptions Of Male And Female Western Australian Adolescents In Relation To Body Image And Smoking, Mary Edwards

Theses : Honours

Although the numbers of adult smokers has declined, numbers of adolescent smokers have not, with females outnumbering males. Research has indicated that adolescent females have higher levels of body image dissatisfaction than males. This dissatisfaction is mostly with regard to weight, which suggests a possible association between female adolescents smoking and weight control. A study of American adolescents (Camp, Klesges & Relyea, 1993) found that adolescent females were more likely to perceive that smoking is a method of weight control and to use smoking to control their weight than adolescent males. This present study investigated the perceptions of625 Western Australian …

Death Resurrected: The Reimplementation Of The Federal Death Penalty, Christopher Q. Cutler

Seattle University Law Review

This Comment analyzes the federal death penalty. Part one discusses the history of the federal death penalty, from its roots in the superstitions and religious dogma of colonial America to the Drug Kingpin Act and the Federal Death Penalty Act of 1994. Part two examines the Drug Kingpin Act, the first federal move into the death penalty arena since the landmark Supreme Court case of Furman v. Georgia. Next, the Comment explores Congress' broad expansion of the federal death penalty in its most recent statute, the Federal Death Penalty Act of 1994. Part four examines the practical application of …
