Tell Hesban And Vicinity In The Iron Age, Paul J. Ray
Tell Hesban And Vicinity In The Iron Age, Paul J. Ray
Dissertations
Problem. Tell Hesban is a major archaeological ruin in central Transjordan. It was excavated from 1968-76 by Andrews University. However, almost 25 years after the termination of this endeavor, a final report dealing with the Iron Age remains has not yet appeared. Although relatively little remains from the Iron Age, which is the earliest period represented on the tell, an understanding of what is left is nevertheless important for comprehending the role the site played in the region at this time.
Method. A historical research design has been used in this study. The excavated architectural and soil/debris layers were analyzed …
Sustainable Living: A Case Study Of Nuns And Their Beliefs, Attitudes And Practices, Mary Catherine Clipson
Sustainable Living: A Case Study Of Nuns And Their Beliefs, Attitudes And Practices, Mary Catherine Clipson
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation is a case study of monastic nuns in the context of sustainable living. The essential core question is: How has the way of life of nuns in a monastic community been a sustaining one. There are six chapters: Introduction, Historical Context and Overview, Methodology, The Context and People of The Priory of Our Lady of Peace, Analysis of Data, and Synthesis and Interpretation.
The methodology used to get at the case study is, primarily, participant observation and individual interviews with twelve (of the eighteen) nuns; and secondarily, an ecological assessment of the community and buildings, and a questionnaire …

Indoctrination And Assimilation In Plural Settings, Ken Badley
Indoctrination And Assimilation In Plural Settings, Ken Badley
Faculty Publications - College of Education
"A twofold problem faces Canadian education. The first fold involves the indoctrination debate, still unsettled after several decades, yet still bearing decisively on educational policy. The second fold involves the changing Canadian educational landscape, now obviously characterized by increasing cultural, religious, and linguistic plurality. This plurality manifests itself in tribalism and in regular conflicts about normativity in the public square. In the midst of this plurality, many Canadian parents of school-aged children believe that courts, provincial governments, and educational authorities deny them educational justice by determining that their own religion cannot inform what their children learn in schools. Yet, from …
Exclusive Or Concurrent Competence To Make Medical Decisions For Adolescents In The United States And United Kingdom , Robert L. Stenger
Exclusive Or Concurrent Competence To Make Medical Decisions For Adolescents In The United States And United Kingdom , Robert L. Stenger
Journal of Law and Health
Medical decision-making is one area where drawing and applying a single defining line between childhood and adulthood has proven difficult. Each society determines how it will allocate decision-making authority with respect to children. This article will address how such allocations have been developed in the United States and the United Kingdom. An analysis of the capacity of an adolescent to make decisions remains incomplete without some consideration of the role of parent(s) and of the government. It is precisely here that recent developments in the United Kingdom may provide helpful guidance in the United States.

An Ethical Exploration Of Gender Inequality In Church Leadership, Elizabeth Rickert
An Ethical Exploration Of Gender Inequality In Church Leadership, Elizabeth Rickert
Honors Theses
An Ethical Exploration of Gender Inequality in Church Leadership provides a moral analysis of the current status of women leaders in the church. Drawing on socio- analytical, ethical-theological, and leadership studies perspectives, this thesis sheds light on the disparity between the theological principles of equality and the ecclesiastical practices of inequality that create an unhealthy moral environment in churches.
Gender inequality in church leadership exists today in both the congregations permitting the ordination of women as well as in those that do not. This widespread discrepancy between rules and practices concerning women leaders in the church points to the socially …

I don't think it's accurate to say this panel has six experts on incarceration. I think we really have five experts and one dilettante. I know a bit about international human rights law. I am not an expert on prisons and I am overwhelmed by the expertise and the statistics that we've just received and about which I hope to learn a great deal more. So I apologize to you in advance for supplying nothing more than impressions of the international realities of incarceration. I will then skip quickly ahead to the law.

Cultural Adjustment Factors Of Senior Missionaries On Assignment In The South Pacific For The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Jonathan W. Shute
Theses and Dissertations
The number of senior missionaries serving missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has increased in recent years. Many of these volunteers travel overseas and are therefore immersed in a different culture. Some of them adjust successfully and others do not. The purpose of this research was to assess senior missionaries' perceptions of the type of preparation they made and training they received before departure, the expectations they had of their assignment, the people and way of life in the islands, and the accuracy of those expectations, the challenges they faced, the factors that they felt helped …

Comparison And Evaluation Of The Moral Significance Of Emotions In Aquinas, The Manualists And Catholic Moral Theology 1960-1990, Thomas Ryan
Theses
This is a comparative study of the moral significance of emotions in Catholic Moral Theology. It is done with reference to Thomas Aquinas, to selected Manualist authors immediately prior to Vatican II, to representative Catholic theologians 1960-1990 and to a sample of contemporary writers from other disciplines. The project argues five points. Firstly, Aquinas sees emotions as designed to have a necessary and constructive significance in moral reasoning and moral development. In their habituated form as affective virtues, they enable a person to have the right emotional responses in terms of their object and intensity. Secondly, the Manualists, by a …
A Comparative Analysis Of Indonesian And Philippino Contraceptive Determinants And Use, Emily Dora Norman
A Comparative Analysis Of Indonesian And Philippino Contraceptive Determinants And Use, Emily Dora Norman
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This exploratory study investigates the contraceptive determinants affecting the variation behind different contraceptive use patterns in Indonesia and the Philippines. I analyze how much effect various determinants have on use patterns and whether these same determinants are relevant to a similar degree in both countries. Several demographic studies have indicated that while education and other socio-economic; variables play a large role in contraceptive use, other factors are pertinent as well. Physical access in terms of distance to a facility or ease in reaching it is one concept. In addition, informational access via availability of mass media and the related function …

"Journal Of The Branch Of The Church Of Christ In Pontiac,…1834": Hyrum Smith's Division Of Zion's Camp, Craig K. Manscill
BYU Studies
On April 21, 1834, Hyrum Smith and Lyman Wight set out from Kirtland, Ohio, for Pontiac, Michigan, to recruit volunteers for the march of Zion's Camp. Their objective was to lead their recruits on a six-hundred-mile march to a prearranged rendezvous with Joseph Smith's Kirtland division in Missouri. Typically, scholarly treatments of the march of Zion's Camp have focused on the accounts of the Kirtland, Ohio, legion while overlooking the Hyrum Smith-Lyman Wight division of Zion's Camp. Yet Hyrum's group, when compared with Joseph's command, demonstrated a similarly significant commitment to addressing the needs of their fellow Saints in Missouri. …
Hindu Occidentalism, Tinu Ruparell
Hindu Occidentalism, Tinu Ruparell
Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies
On a research trip through India one of my goals was to talk to Hindu scholars about their views of Christianity and in particular Hindu-Christian dialogue. Though I visited numerous Universities, Colleges, and maths, I found very few Hindus who took any interest at all in the doctrinal conversation between religions then characteristic of interreligious dialogue. Time and again I was told by these distinguished and erudite academics that they were not interested in Hindu-Christian dialogue. While this may have been due to a failure on my part to ask the right sorts of questions, or simply my bad …
