The Involvement Of Gay Men In The Lutheran Church, Mary E. Vorhes
The Involvement Of Gay Men In The Lutheran Church, Mary E. Vorhes
Theses and Graduate Projects
Gay men have varying degrees of involvement in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). This exploratory, qualitative study looked at the participation of gay men in Reconciling-In-Chnst (RIC) Lutheran congregations, what has affected that participation, and how the participants feel about their involvement in the Lutheran Church. Five gay men between the ages of 40-60 were interviewed regarding how they feel about their participation in the Lutheran church. The findings indicate that some participants left the church at some time, that all participants are curently active in the Lutheran Church, and that all participants are dissatisfied with the ELCA …

Now in regard to Oliver he was born in the Town of Wells in the state of Vermont[.] when he was three years of age Father married my Mother she resided in the Town of Poultney so Oliver was brought up in Poultney Rutland County Vermont and when he arrived at the age of twenty he went to the State of New York where his older brothers were married and Settled and in about two years my father moved …
Teaching Prayer: Pilot Survey Of Academic Courses On Personal Prayer, E. James Baesler
Teaching Prayer: Pilot Survey Of Academic Courses On Personal Prayer, E. James Baesler
Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications
The practical concerns of an individual interested in learning about prayer in an academic context are interconnected with the practical concerns about teaching an academic course on prayer. A pilot study proposed to investigate and evaluate the context and content of academic courses on personal prayer from the perspective of teaching prayer, asking what proportion of institutions of higher education offer courses on prayer, in which department, and on what level. The search was limited to the Christian faith, and in particular to private colleges and universities of the Catholic denomination. An online Internet search yielded a sample of 126 …
Catholic And Intellectual: Conjunction Or Disjunction?, Marcia L. Colish
Catholic And Intellectual: Conjunction Or Disjunction?, Marcia L. Colish
Marianist Award Lectures
Marcia L. Colish lectures on the apparent disconnect that is being formed in the contemporary world of the notion that Catholicism could not be related to anything rational. She highlights the idea that throughout history and through her practice, the Church in her institutions and universities has been a supporter of intellectual formation and development, not an inhibitor.

Consumed By Faith: The Development Of Christian Fundamentalism And Its Applications In Contemporary Society, Laura M. Gagne
Honors Theses
My research aims to understand how and why fundamentalists justify violence against people who do not fit their profile of "righteous" or "saved" persons, such as abortion doctors and clinic workers, gays and lesbians, and Jews. The first section of this paper travels through the history of fundamentalism since its origins in the British and American apocalipticism, or belief in the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. However, my history of Protestant Fundamentalism in the United States will focus on the ways in which Fundamentalism developed in response to many changes in American social structure. I interpret Fundamentalism as an anti-modern …

We Also Marched: The Women And Children Of Zion's Camp, 1834, Andrea G. Radke
BYU Studies
"All victory and glory is brought to pass unto you through your diligence, faithfulness, and prayers of faith" (D&C 103:36). On February 24, 1834, Joseph Smith received this promise for the members of the Zion's Camp expedition. Further, the assurance came that "my [the Lord's] presence shall be with you.... Let no man be afraid to lay down his life for my sake; for whoso layeth down his life for my sake shall find it again" (D&C 103:26-27). Certainly the expedition to Missouri in 1834 held terrible possibilities for danger, sickness, and violence. Nevertheless, spiritual blessings were promised to those …

In Your Face I Hear The Word Of God: Lévinas And The Trinity, Glenn J. Morrison
Theology Papers and Journal Articles
When was the last time you recognised the Word of God in the face of another person? Or perhaps when was the last time you clearly saw the face of the other beyond those plastic masks -unconsciously moulded upon our faces during the process of enculturation, diffusion and the development of our self-consciousness? Recently, a disabled person travelling on her motorised wheelchair approached me at the station, and began talking to me about her cat that bites her. She told me how fond she is of this cat, and yet how hurt she feels about its strange behaviour. This cat …
Information Vs. Formation In The Training Of Church Musicians, Quentin Faulkner
Information Vs. Formation In The Training Of Church Musicians, Quentin Faulkner
Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications
The inexorable erosion of purpose in the formation of United States clergy—which is of course a reflection of the current malaise in US religious life—is both well established and well-documented. An article by Paul Wilkes in The Atlantic Monthly reveals the uneasy situation in US seminaries of all denominational stripes:
The issue of personal spirituality of Protestant clergy has traditionally hardly ever been addressed in seminaries, and has not until recently been considered especially relevant. …faculty appointments are often made on the basis not only of scholarship but also of outlook. Religious beliefs are hardly considered. As for religious practice—attending …
