Membership At Risk: Representation Of Disability In Popular Counselor Education Textbooks, Nancy A. Rosenau Dec 2000

Membership At Risk: Representation Of Disability In Popular Counselor Education Textbooks, Nancy A. Rosenau

Dissertations

Representations of disability in American culture are saturated with negative images and meanings. Pervasive negativity threatens full societal membership and its related benefits of a sense of belonging, connectedness, and inclusion, and a source of identity, social networks and empowerment for people with disabilities.

Disability pride is a resistant movement that seeks to denaturalize assumptions about the negative experience of disability. The multicultural turn in counseling recognizes that competent practice requires awareness of diverse groups in society. Disability as the largest minority group in the U.S. requires counselor awareness. This study examined the representation of disability in a sample of …

Environment, Cultures, And Social Change On The Great Plains: A History Of Crow Creek Tribal School, Robert W. Galler Jr.

Dissertations

This study explores the socio-cultural history of a school for Native American students on the Crow Creek Sioux Reservation in central South Dakota. The case study places the school's history (1886-present) within the context of the historic interaction between environment, cultures, and social change on the Great Plains.

This work focuses on a Catholic school and the multi-dimensional students and staff who constitute its story. These individuals acted neither as perpetually passive students nor simplistically sinister administrators. Instead, this dissertation broadly explores the challenging nature of intercultural relations that led to the founding of the school and how tribal/Catholic interactions …

This analytic variable study examined the potential differences that exist among male juvenile sexual offenders (JSOs), general offenders (GOs), and nonoffenders (NOs) on the emotional expressiveness variables of alexithymia and affective orientation, and three problematic behavior variables including self-defeating behavior, risk taking, and reckless behavior. It was hypothesized that JSOs and GOs would be statistically significantly different than NOs on all variables but not different from each other.

The study derived its theoretical constructs from concerns theory found in the Concems-Based Adoption Model (CBAM). The Stages of Concern …

Hiring To Maintain Mission, Richard D. Breslin Dec 2000

Hiring To Maintain Mission, Richard D. Breslin

Journal of Catholic Education

This article is a direct outgrowth of the appearance of Ex Corde Ecclesiae and the need for Catholic colleges and universities to address their hiring practices in order to maintain their identity as Catholic institutions of higher learning. The author draws a parallel between the personal philosophy of individuals within the community and the perceived, if not real, institutional philosophy of the college or university as Catholic. Catholic institutions can lose their souls while climbing the ladder of success and prestige simply because they have paid insufficient attention to the question of the philosophical fit between their employees and their …

Ex Corde Ecclesiae: Promises And Challenges, Francis George Dec 2000

Ex Corde Ecclesiae: Promises And Challenges, Francis George

Journal of Catholic Education

How does the mission of the university relate to the mission that Christ gave his Church? This article explores the presuppositions that preceded Ex Corde Ecclesiae and offers an analysis of the recently approved ordinances for its implementation. Candid discussion of the challenges that remain in the implementation process concludes the article. Calling the 1967 Land O’ Lakes Statement by the presidents of the major American Catholic universities “not the path to follow,” the author explains how a successful implementation of Ex Corde Ecclesiae might look.

Religion And U.S. Culture, James L. Heft Dec 2000

Religion And U.S. Culture, James L. Heft

Journal of Catholic Education

After reviewing the history of the interplay between religion and culture in the U.S., this article explores important facets of contemporary American society that color the experience and meaning of religious faith. Among these are excessive individualism, a heightened awareness of the need for personal integrity, and the desire for personal religious experience. While religion is often treated as a “classroom pariah” at universities, the author argues that there are numerous possibilities for a more full integration of religion into university life and overall American culture.

Transparency, Probity And Accountability In Fiscal Operations As Panacea For Economic Development., T. O. Okunrounmu

Economic and Financial Review

The view of the paper is that the experience of public sector failure in Nigeria is not an indictment of fiscal management theory but a reflection of the political and economic environment resulting from the absence of fiscal transparency and probity in management of government finances. This position was corroborated in the report of the collaborative review of Federal Government Expenditure by the officials of the Federal Government and the World Bank (March 1996). It was observed that Nigeria's tremendous potential for growth and poverty reduction has yet to be fulfilled. A key constraint has been the recent conduct of …
