Evaluation Of Packaging Materials Under Vacuum For Potential Use As Internal Cushioning For Semiconductor Industry Vacuum Machinery, Andrew Baisch Jan 2000

Evaluation Of Packaging Materials Under Vacuum For Potential Use As Internal Cushioning For Semiconductor Industry Vacuum Machinery, Andrew Baisch

Theses

This study explores a concept for applying basic packaging materials to an environment of high vacuum. This study identified three basic packaging materials and exposed them to a high vacuum environment to identify visual effects caused by the vacuum. In semiconductor and data storage industries, the machinery needed to ultimately create a computer chip often contains vacuum chambers. A common practice of the industry is to ship this machinery while under a state of high vacuum. There are parts inside these vacuum chambers that need protection from the effects of shock and vibration. By placing a sample of packaging material …

Multigrid For The Mortar Finite Element Method, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Joseph E. Pasciak Jan 2000

Multigrid For The Mortar Finite Element Method, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Joseph E. Pasciak

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A multigrid technique for uniformly preconditioning linear systems arising from a mortar finite element discretization of second order elliptic boundary value problems is described and analyzed. These problems are posed on domains partitioned into subdomains, each of which is independently triangulated in a multilevel fashion. The multilevel mortar finite element spaces based on such triangulations (which need not align across subdomain interfaces) are in general not nested. Suitable grid transfer operators and smoothers are developed which lead to a variable Vcycle preconditioner resulting in a uniformly preconditioned algebraic system. Computational results illustrating the theory are also presented.

Mortar Estimates Independent Of Number Of Subdomains, Jay Gopalakrishnan Jan 2000

Mortar Estimates Independent Of Number Of Subdomains, Jay Gopalakrishnan

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The stability and error estimates for the mortar finite element method are well established. This work examines the dependence of constants in these estimates on shape and number of subdomains. By means of a Poincar´e inequality and some scaling arguments, these estimates are found not to deteriorate with increase in number of subdomains.

Of Moths And Men: Theo Lang And The Persistence Of Richard Goldschmidt's Theory Of Homosexuality, 1916-1960, Michael Dietrich Jan 2000

Of Moths And Men: Theo Lang And The Persistence Of Richard Goldschmidt's Theory Of Homosexuality, 1916-1960, Michael Dietrich

Dartmouth Scholarship

Using an analogy between moths and men, in 1916, Richard Goldschmidt proposed that homosexuality was a case of genetic intersexuality. As he strove to create a unified theory of sex determination that would encompass animals ranging from moths to men, Goldschmidt's doubts grew concerning the association of homosexuality with intersexuality until, in 1931, he dropped homosexuality from his theory of intersexuality. Despite Goldschmidt's explicit rejection of his theory of homosexuality, Thee Lang, a researcher in the Genealogical-Demographic Department of the Institute for Psychiatric Research in Munich, revived it, maintained Goldschmidt's association with it, and argued on its behalf in publications …

The Problem Of The Gene, Michael Dietrich Jan 2000

The Problem Of The Gene, Michael Dietrich

Dartmouth Scholarship

During the early 20th century the diverse practices of genetics were unified by the concept of the gene. This classical gene was simultaneously a unit of structure, function, mutation, and recombination. Starting in the 1940s, however, the classical gene began to fragment. Today when we speak of a gene for some malady, a regulatory gene, a structural gene, or a gene frequency, it is entirely possible that we are deploying different gene concepts even though we are using the same term. The problem of the gene addresses the fragmentation of the classical gene concept by asking to what extent a …

Toward The Restorative Constitution: A Restorative Justice Critique Of Anti-Gang Public Nuisance Injunctions, Joan W. Howarth

Scholarly Works

Gang members from elsewhere congregated on lawns, on sidewalks, and in front of apartment complexes at all hours. They displayed a casual contempt for notions of law, order, and decency -- openly drinking, smoking dope, sniffing toluene, and even snorting cocaine laid out in neat lines on the hoods of residents' cars. San Jose prosecutors responded by obtaining and enforcing a broad injunction against the gangs and their members, based on the finding that the gangs' activities constituted a public nuisance. California prosecutors have sought such anti-gang public nuisance injunctions since 1987. Their constitutionality was in doubt for ten years …

Intelligent Safety And Driver Assistance Systems For Heavy Duty Trucks, Volkmar Gross, Ziad Keirouz Jan 2000

Intelligent Safety And Driver Assistance Systems For Heavy Duty Trucks, Volkmar Gross, Ziad Keirouz

Engineering and Technology Management Student Projects

Preface:

The number of commercial vehicles (trucks) on the U.S. Highways will continue to growth by an average annual ra!e of approximately 10% over the next 3 to 5 years. Along with the predicted increased movement of goods due to the ecommerce revolution, accidents (and death rates) involving commercial trucks are on the rise. In the following, we will investigate the future of Intelligent Safety and Driver Assistance Systems, designed to increase the overall safety of commercial vehicles, in the wake of augmented national and government interest in these technologies. We will concentrate on vehicle-based rather than infrastructure- based technologies. …

Disappearing Acts: The State And Violence Against Women In The Twentieth Century, Michelle Fine, Lois Weis Jan 2000

Disappearing Acts: The State And Violence Against Women In The Twentieth Century, Michelle Fine, Lois Weis

Publications and Research

As children we held our breath, our senses filled with the musty smells of elephants, the staccato flashes of twirling plastic flashlights, the terrors of trapeze. With mystery, moustache, and elegance, the magician waved a wand, invited a woman, usually White, seemingly working class, into a box. She disappeared or was cut in half. Applause. Our early introduction to the notion of the sponsored disappearing act. So, too, at the end of the twentieth century, we witness poor and working-class women shoved into spaces too small for human form, no elegance, no wand. And they too disappear. Disappearing from welfare …

Monoglossic Policies For A Heteroglossic Culture: Misinterpreted Multilingualism In Modern Galicia, José Del Valle

Publications and Research

This article critically discusses the representations of language that, since the 1980s, have been informing language policy in Galicia. Data from Galicia´s Sociolinguisic Map are re-analyzed and an argument is made that current language policies are grounded in a misinterpretation of how speakers map language on to identity.
