The Christian View Of Vocation For Librarians, John Allen Delivuk Jan 2000

The Christian View Of Vocation For Librarians, John Allen Delivuk

The Christian Librarian

Like two brothers, western civilization and Christianity grew up together. Christianity gave the civilization its virtues, its view of work, and its view of service. With the decline of Christian influence, there is an increasing separation between virtue, service and work. This has led to vocational crisis in professions which have described themselves as vocations. Nurses, doctors and teachers have noticed the problem. This paper will make some observations concerning the crisis, give historical and biblical insights into our view of vocation, discuss some errors with the viewpoints, give some proposals for improving the situation and conclude with a summary.

The Y Factor, J. Ray Doerksen Jan 2000

The Y Factor, J. Ray Doerksen

The Christian Librarian

Maybe college and university administrators have had it .right all the time-and librarians have been out of touch with reality. Is it possible that one of our most vocal causes has been a misguided one?

What I am talking about is the size of library budgets for the purchase of information resources. As colleges and universities experienced rapid growth following World War II, libraries shared in the largesse that resulted from increasing enrollments. New library buildings sprouted everywhere; budgets for learning resources expanded to fill the buildings. Life was good.

Access To The Site Has Been Blocked!, Doug Fruehling

The Christian Librarian

I approach the topic of Internet filters as a librarian at a Christian liberal arts institution of higher education, PointLomaNazarene University (PLNU). The following should not be taken as an official statement regarding PLNU policy. No doubt Christian librarians at public libraries find they must address these issues differently from those encountered at Christian campuses.

Thoughts From A Public Librarian, June Bostwick Jan 2000

Thoughts From A Public Librarian, June Bostwick

The Christian Librarian

I am fairly new to the Association of Christian Librarians and librarianship. This year, the 43rd conference, was my fourth ACL conference. I have been a reference librarian for about the same number of years. I felt a bit lost at my first conference. I would imagine most people do. I was just beginning to pursue my MLS and, most of my experience had been in public libraries. So, classes that focused on academic issues didn't mean too much to me. However, other conference goers helped me choose a few subjects that could be adapted to public library service and …

Death Of Eastern: How One Man Destroyed An Airline, Joseph G. Ferrante Jan 2000

Death Of Eastern: How One Man Destroyed An Airline, Joseph G. Ferrante

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

In 1986, when Frank Lorenzo took over Eastern Airlines, the country's third largest carrier was in decline: its route structure was inherently weak, its costs were sky high, and its stiff-necked labor unions fought with each other almost as much as they fought management. To man in corporate America, Lorenzo seemed just the man to whip Eastern back into shape. Lorenzo, with the help of Michael Milken and Drexel Burnham Lambert 's junk bond machine, built his tiny Texas Air Corporation into an empire. Indeed, with the addition of Eastern to Continental, Frontier, and People Express airlines, Lorenzo controlled the …

Residency Status And Age Of Entry As Moderators Of The Effectiveness Of A Special Act School District, Sabrina Beckerink

Theses

This study investigated the effectiveness of the program at Randolph Academy Union Free School District, a special act school district designed to educate students with emotional, behavioral, and learning difficulties. The outcome of treatment is documented by measurement of change in academic achievement. Pre-post comparisons of standardized achievement test scores were collected from the psychoeducational files of 49 students. Results indicate significant gains in academic achievement. A two-way analysis of covariance identified age of entry into the program as a moderator of academic achievement: younger entrants improved their relative ranking more than older entrants.

Hplc/Hydride Generation Aas Coupling For The Speciation Of Sb(Iii) And Sb(V) In Wastewaters, Nuray Şatiroğlu, Sema Bektaş, Ömer Genç, Haydar Hazel

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A comparative study was made with two HPLC columns of different lengths (PRP-X 100, 250 mm \( \times \) 4.1 mm id and PRP-X 100, 100 mm \( \times \) 4.1 mm id) coupled to HGAAS for the speciation of inorganic Sb(III) and Sb(V) species. The effects of eluent concentration and pH on the retention times of Sb species in both columns were investigated. The separation of Sb species was realized by using 50 mmol/L citrate solution at pH 4.0 as the eluent. The retention times were 2.0 min and 10.0 min in the 250 mm column, and 1.4 min …

The Effects Of Selective Capital Controls On Malaysia's Sustainable Economic Growth, Seok Foon Ong

Student Works (2000-2009)

The adoption of selective capital controls by Malaysia since September 1, 1998 remains a controversial issue. Among the opponents, selective capital controls would retard the economic growth of the country. The proponents argue that this measure is necessary to aid the government in regaining autonomy in monetary policy formulation and stabilizing the economy. The objectives of the study are: (i) to understand the contributory role played by the selective capital controls in coping with the recent currency crisis, (ii) to examine the appropriateness and effectiveness of the selective capital controls in relation to the fixed exchange rate, government fiscal and …

The Impact Of Airline Alliances On Airlines, Saadah Huda Sholah

Student Works (2000-2009)

The study is aim at analysing airline alliances and their effect on the airlines. The effects of alliances on the factors critical to the choice of airline were ambiguous. An alliance's effect on conveniency, schedules, levels of service, reliability and other critical issues depends on the strategic decisions taken by the alliance partners. The only critical factor that is affected positively by the alliance almost without exception is the Frequent Flyer Programme that gains momentum with increased route network density. The business strategy of airlines forming collaborative alliances with each other to extend market reach, control costs and to limit …

Success & Failure Of The Sewerage Privatisation In Malaysia : A Management Perspective, Izali Sulaiman

Student Works (2000-2009)

It is depressing to note that the sewerage condition in the country has long been in a deplorable state that untreated waste and unhygienic sanitation is widespread. So little emphasis has been placed on the development of this public utility sector where lack of funds and expertise has always been the logical excuse. The development pace has been too slow to meet the demands of the country's progress and environmental disaster; somehow, looms in the near future. The sewerage privatisation was seen as a necessary move by the government and in doing so, changed the industry from being public-owned to …

In 1961, Prof. Franco Modigliani and Prof. Merton H. Student Works (2000-2009)

The growing complexity and sophistication of the stock market had made stock broking a specialized profession. The era of globalization will pose a threat to securities industry in Malaysia. Thus, the importance of marketing in stock broking firms should not be taken for granted. In terms of market segmentation, demographic characteristics alone may no longer serve as a basis for segmenting individual investors. This had led to the development of psychographics research to more effectively communicate and market. By analyzing the characteristics of the individual investors, brokers in Malaysia will be in a better position to identify new opportunities. The …
