Production Of 2,3-Butanediol From Molasses, Isita Sengupta

Student Works (2000-2009)

2,3-Butanediol is an important chemical, which is used in the manufacture of products such as synthetic rubber, printing inks, perfumes, fumigants, moistening and softening agents, explosives and plasticizers. It has been known as a bacterial fermentation product since early part of the 20th century. Klebsiella oxytoca Is an organism, which can convert a variety of sugars to 2,3-butanediol. Available literature shows that principal monosaccharides of cellulosic substances as well as major hemicellulosic compounds have been used as carbon source. However, there is very little information on the application of waste material as carbon source for fermentation of butanediol. In this …

Student Works (2000-2009)

In this study, the yield of biomass and polyhydroxyalkanoate  (PHA) of Pseudomonas oleovorans grown in batch and fed-batch cultivations were compared. When oleic acid (QA) (0.5% w/v) was used as carbon source, a significant increase in biomass.and PHA content were observed through fedbatch cultivation. The biomass and PHA content obtained from batch cultivation were 1.45±0.19 g/I and 2.50±0.77 % cell dry weight (CDW) respectively, while in the fed-batch cultivation, the biomass and PHA content increased significantly to 3.35±0.78 g/I and 32.72±0.30 %CDW respectively.  When saponified palm olein (SPO) (0.5% w/v) was used as a carbon source, the batch cultivation yielded …

The Doctrine Of Certainty In The Islamic Methods Of Inference, Soualhi Yunus Jan 2000

The Doctrine Of Certainty In The Islamic Methods Of Inference, Soualhi Yunus

Student Works (2000-2009)

This thesis is an articulate study on the modes of inference in the legal field. Observing the huge legacy left by early and modem jurists on Usul al-Fiqh, one would find that the rules promulgated to regulate the operation of Ijtihad appears vacillating between certainty and uncertainty. A thorough examination of the criteria set by jurists to determine the accuracy of the legal proofs suggests that every thing appears to have been comprehensively tackled except "Certainty". A lack of an adequate theorization for certainty in the legal field is exactly what has prompted us to venture into this thesis. This …

Subcloning, Characterization And Sequencing Of The Streptomycin Resistance Gene Of A Multiple Antibiotic Resistance Transposon From Salmonella Typhi, Ramesvari Pararajasingam Pillai Jan 2000

Subcloning, Characterization And Sequencing Of The Streptomycin Resistance Gene Of A Multiple Antibiotic Resistance Transposon From Salmonella Typhi, Ramesvari Pararajasingam Pillai

Student Works (2000-2009)

Salmonella typhi S8 is resistant to ampicillin (Ac), chloramphenicol (Cm), cotrimoxazole (Ctm), streptomycin (Sm), and tetracycline (Tc). The Ac, Cm, Ctm. and Sm resistance traits have been shown to be mediated by a multiple antibiotic resistance transposon located on a large conjugative plasmid. Transposition of the transposon encoding Ac^R (ampicillin resistance), Cm^R Ctm^R and Sm^R designated TnX8, was done by Wong (1999) to a recipient replicon, plasmid pUB307. The Ac^R Cm^R, Ctm^R and Sm^R genes were subcloned into plasmid pKan by digesting the recombinant plasmid, des ignated pCL8 (pUB307::TnX8), with San. This subcloning strategy generated different recombinant pKans that harbour …

An alternative fractionation method, preparative thin layer chromatography (TLC), was also investigated to separate …

Use Of Oak Hammocks By Neotropical Migrant Songbirds During Stopover In Coastal South Carolina, Scott Glen Somershoe Jan 2000

Use Of Oak Hammocks By Neotropical Migrant Songbirds During Stopover In Coastal South Carolina, Scott Glen Somershoe

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

Many species of Neotropical migrant songbirds have been reported to be declining in the last few decades, and the loss and fragmentation of stopover habitat has been implicated as a potential cause of these population declines. To manage properly a fragmented forest landscape for migrating songbirds information is needed on how the size and the habitat of forest fragments influence their use by migrants during stopover. Therefore, I conducted censuses of Neotropical migrant birds in eight oak hammocks of varying size (0.32-3.08 ha) at the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge, Jasper County, South Carolina. Censuses were conducted at 0600-1030 h during …

Senior Project: A Paradox In Critical Pedagogy, Mark Allen Winters Jan 2000

Senior Project: A Paradox In Critical Pedagogy, Mark Allen Winters

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

High school education is currently based upon technicist pedagogy, transforming education into mere technical training for the workforce. The regimen of testing in schools standardizes experiences and fails to provide a complete view of what students know and are able to do. Students need freedom to question and to insert their own interests into what they are studying. Such freedom provides more than preparation for graduation; it provides emancipatory education. I focused on a single curricular program—Senior Project. My research questioned, "Can Senior Project provide high school students with the freedom to study topics of personal interest and the freedom …
