Enforcement Against Counterfeiting In The People's Republic Of China, Daniel C.K. Chow Jan 2000

Enforcement Against Counterfeiting In The People's Republic Of China, Daniel C.K. Chow

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

Although the discussion in this Article is limited to counterfeiting in China, many of the issues discussed are endemic to the Chinese legal system as a whole, and apply also to other intellectual property rights, such as copyright piracy and patent infringements. Moreover, many of the themes raised in this Article also illuminate the current state of the nascent Chinese legal system as a whole and how its capacity is tested as it continues the struggle to keep pace with China's many economic reforms and accompanying social changes. Part I of this Article begins with a review of the enforcement …

Trade In Technology Within The Free Trade Zone: The Impact Of The Wto Agreement, Nafta, And Tax Treaties On The Nafta Signatories, Catherine Brown, Christine Manolakas Jan 2000

Trade In Technology Within The Free Trade Zone: The Impact Of The Wto Agreement, Nafta, And Tax Treaties On The Nafta Signatories, Catherine Brown, Christine Manolakas

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

Trade in technology and related services has assumed a major role both on the world trade agenda and within the NAFTA block. The success of such cross-border trade is dependent upon three factors: protection of intellectual property,' access to foreign markets by service providers, and a minimized risk of double taxation. Each of these factors is impacted by national laws, multinational conventions, and bilateral tax treaties. The last decade has witnessed an explosion of such legislation and agreements. This article focuses on Canada, Mexico and the United States, and explores the World Trade Organization Agreement ("WTO Agreement"), the North American …

Afterword: Antitrust And American Business Abroad Revisited, David J. Gerber Jan 2000

Afterword: Antitrust And American Business Abroad Revisited, David J. Gerber

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

Kingman Brewster's exceptionally influential Antitrust and American Business Abroad (1958) came to symbolize an era in antitrust law and in the relationship of U.S. business to international economic activity. It gave conceptual contours to a fundamental problem that had been only dimly perceived before -- namely, the need to define the reach of U.S. antitrust law.' In a masterful and much expanded third edition of the book, Professor Spencer Waller marks the transition to a new, very different, and far more complex era in antitrust law and in its significance for international business. We have only begun to recognize and …

Microfaunal Investigation Of The Early Toarcian (Lower Jurassic) Extinction Event In N.W. Europe, Mark Donald Hylton Jan 2000

Microfaunal Investigation Of The Early Toarcian (Lower Jurassic) Extinction Event In N.W. Europe, Mark Donald Hylton

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The Early Jurassic was a time of rapidly rising sea-level associated with the extensive spread of anoxic bottom waters. Sea-level rise across the Pliensbachian - Toarcian boundary culminated in the falciferum Zone of the Toarcian and is one of the best authenticated eustatic events in the Jurassic. This major transgressive pulse was marked by deepw ater marine sequencesa nd was associatedw ith the deposition of organic-rich shales. The development of anoxia coincides with a notable period of mass extinction of the marine fauna. High resolution sampling and study of the microfaunast hrough sequencesin N. W. Europe confirm that benthic foraminiferal. …

Accreditation And Academic Quality: A Comparison With Healthcare Accreditation, Ramon B. Zabriskie, Bryan P. Mccormick Jan 2000

Accreditation And Academic Quality: A Comparison With Healthcare Accreditation, Ramon B. Zabriskie, Bryan P. Mccormick

Faculty Publications

The origins of accreditation in higher education began at the turn of this century, resulting from the rapid growth in number and variety of educational institutions. One of the key concerns of accreditation has been to address quality in educational experiences. Specialized accreditation of higher education programs in recreation, park resources, and leisure services has evolved over the past 20 years; however; concerns can be raised regarding the ability of the current process to adequately measure quality. Comparisons are made with trends identified in the evolution of accreditation in healthcare and their implication to the future of accreditation. Recommendations are …

Two Separate Continually Online Trained Neurocontrollers For Excitation And Turbine Control Of A Turbogenerator, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley Jan 2000

Two Separate Continually Online Trained Neurocontrollers For Excitation And Turbine Control Of A Turbogenerator, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents the design of two separate continually online trained (GOT) artificial neural network (ANN) controllers for excitation and turbine control of a turbogenerator connected to the infinite bus through a transmission line. These neurocontrollers augment/replace the conventional automatic voltage regulator and the turbine governor of a generator. A third COT ANN is used to identify the complex nonlinear dynamics of the power system. Results are presented to show that the two COT ANN controllers can control turbogenerators under steady state as well as transient conditions and thus allow turbogenerators to operate more closely to their steady state stability …

My family and I lived in Hawaii when the Gulf War began, and during the early clays of the war, when the daily news announced the results of US bomb raids over Baghdad, my daughter Carrie, who was then six years old, often had trouble sleeping at night.

Muddying Boundaries: Mixing Genres With Five Paragraphs, Deborah M. Dean Jan 2000

Muddying Boundaries: Mixing Genres With Five Paragraphs, Deborah M. Dean

Faculty Publications

The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch is a charming children's picture book. Part of its charm lies in its ability to anticipate the conventions of the fairy tale genre, creating expectations for readers, then pushing the boundaries of the genre in novel ways. As the story moves outside traditional expectations with its unexpected reversals (the princess fights the dragon to save the prince, and the fight is more mental trickery than physical battle), the boundaries of the genre are muddied, making my secondary students smile when I read to them. But it is the ending that surprises them most. …

Going Public: Letters To The World, Deborah Dean Jan 2000

Going Public: Letters To The World, Deborah Dean

Faculty Publications

When we consider why most of us write, the reasons tend to focus on expressing ourselves, particularly to an audience. We want our voices to be heard, our thoughts to be given substance and weight. We want someone to know and care about what we have to say In essence, we want to be published. Because of that, we are willing to spend time with our thoughts, to wrestle with them as we try to shape them into a form that will have meaning for others, and we are willing to revise/ reshape/rethink what we write so that it becomes …

Adaptive Information Filtering: Evolutionary Computation And N-Gram Representation, Daniel R. Tauritz, Ida G. Sprinkhuizen-Kuyper Jan 2000

Adaptive Information Filtering: Evolutionary Computation And N-Gram Representation, Daniel R. Tauritz, Ida G. Sprinkhuizen-Kuyper

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Adaptive Information Filtering (AIF) is concerned with filtering information streams in changing environments. The changes may occur both on the transmission side (the nature of the streams can change) and on the reception side (the interests of a user can change). The research described in this paper details the progress made in a prototype AIF system based on weighted n-gram analysis and evolutionary computation. A major advance is the design and implementation of an n-gram class library allowing experimentation with different values of n instead of solely with 3-grams as in the past. The new prototype system was tested on …

Reducing Cognitive Overheads In A Web Warehouse Using Reverse-Osmosis, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Wee Keong Ng, Ee-Peng Lim, Sourav S. Bhowmick Jan 2000

Reducing Cognitive Overheads In A Web Warehouse Using Reverse-Osmosis, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Wee Keong Ng, Ee-Peng Lim, Sourav S. Bhowmick

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper provides a quantitative analysis of reducing cognitive overheads in a Web warehouse using an important class of operation called reverse osmosis. The analysis is used to examine two different cognitive overheads of locating relevant nodes or information and display time of a Web table. A reverse-osmosis operation enables us to eliminate in relevant information from a collection of Web documents stored in the form of a Web table. We call such an operation reverse-osmosis because it is analogous to the reverse osmosis process in the field of water purification. We discuss a formal algorithm of the reverse-osmosis operation

Adaptive Critic Based Neurocontroller For Turbogenerators With Global Dual Heuristic Programming, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Donald C. Wunsch, Ronald G. Harley Jan 2000

Adaptive Critic Based Neurocontroller For Turbogenerators With Global Dual Heuristic Programming, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Donald C. Wunsch, Ronald G. Harley

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Turbogenerators are nonlinear time varying systems. This paper presents the design of a neurocontroller for such a turbogenerator that augments/replaces the traditional automatic voltage regulator (AVR) and the turbine governor using a novel technique based on the adaptive critic designs (ACDs) with emphasis on global dual heuristic programming (GDHP). Simulation results are presented to show that the neurocontroller derived with the GDHP approach is robust and its performance is better when compared with that derived with other neural network technique, especially when system conditions and configuration changes.

The Use Of Two Mixture Fractions To Treat Coal Combustion Products In Turbulent Pulverized-Coal Flames, Daniel V. Flores, Thomas H. Fletcher Jan 2000

The Use Of Two Mixture Fractions To Treat Coal Combustion Products In Turbulent Pulverized-Coal Flames, Daniel V. Flores, Thomas H. Fletcher

Faculty Publications

Previous coal combustion models using assumed-shape PDF's to treat turbulence-chemistry interactions have used only one progress variable to treat products from coal reactions. This assumes that the products of all coal reactions have the same composition. However. the composition of the combustion products of coal particles is known to vary with burnout, especially between devclatilization and char oxidation. In this work, two progress variables were implemented which distinguish between the products of devolatilization and those of char oxidation. This new approach requires as input the specified volatile content and elemental release during devolatilization. The values for these parameters were estimated …
