On October 29, 1969, sometime after two o'clock in the afternoon, following yet another heated exchange with defendant Bobby Seale in a courtroom full of spectators, reporters, and armed guards, Judge Julius Jennings Hoffman turned to a marshal and ordered: "Take that defendant into the room in there and deal with him as he should be dealt with in this circumstance."' Judge Hoffman described the aftermath:
In an attempt to maintain order in the courtroom, the Court thereupon ordered the defendant Seale removed from the courtroom at which time he was forcibly restrained by binding and gagging. The defendant Seale …

PROCEEDINGS PROFESSOR WILLIAMS: I am going to talk fast, and talk short as an introduction to this panel. First, just a very few words about the norm of parental care. The goal-my goal, anyway, in using the norm of parental care which, of course, started out really as the norm of mother care-is to try to use the momentum of domesticity to bend our current gender to use the norm of parental care as a way of democratizing access to domesticity, which has always been classbased.
Working Towards A Cartographic Lexicon: The Role Of Units, Structure, Content, And Expression In Geographic Information, Michael Charles Fabbri
Working Towards A Cartographic Lexicon: The Role Of Units, Structure, Content, And Expression In Geographic Information, Michael Charles Fabbri
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This thesis was conceived from an interdisciplinary perspective towards the advancement of cartographic research and geographic education. The primary focus is to understand the cognitive process of cartographic communication as an approach both to improvements in design and to teaching and learning of the cartographic language. Specifically, it attempts to understand more about how the map functions. It accepts that the map is a functional graphic display, whose main purpose is to represent, communicate, and store geographical information, which allows a focus on what that geographical information is conceptually. The essential goal of map use is geographic comprehension, and if …
Training Mediators To Listen: Deconstructing Dialogue And Constructing Understanding, Agendas, And Agreements, Lela P. Love
Training Mediators To Listen: Deconstructing Dialogue And Constructing Understanding, Agendas, And Agreements, Lela P. Love
Articles
This article examines the unique components of dialogue between disputing parties that mediators extract and reframe to move the discussion forward. The same components provide the building blocks of the discussion agenda and the framework of the mediation agreement. The article suggests a number of teaching strategies for training mediators to listen effectively and proactively.

How parents view the nature of a child and their own role as parents has great influence over the life of that child. Many perspectives about the nature of children have arisen in the course of Western Civilization that have shaped childrearing practices for centuries, including the increasingly accepted scholarly view that parents matter relatively little in children’s lives. (2) This chapter emphasizes inspired, eternal principles that are supported by empirical and conceptual scholarship, which suggests that optimal parenting does indeed matter in children’s lives.
Caregivers Locus Of Control For Child Improvement, Timothy B. Smith
Caregivers Locus Of Control For Child Improvement, Timothy B. Smith
Faculty Publications
A potentially important variable that has received little attention in the disabilities literature is the caregiver's locus of control beliefs for child improvement as they relate to treatment compliance and actual child improvement. To evaluate the construct's utility in a practice setting, 131 caregiver-child dyads were assessed twice, twelve months apart. Children were an average of approximately four years old at the first assessment, and all of them had mild to severe developmental disabilities. Aspects of caregiver compliance to treatment were rated, and measures of child development status, family functioning, and caregiver locus of control were administered. Results indicated that …

Dan Cooper, American Designer (1901-1965), Diane Joyce Montenegro
Open Access Master's Theses
Dan Cooper (1901-1965) merits greater attention than he has received for his contributions to twentieth-century American interior design. During his forty-one-year career, he was a keen observer of changes in American society and was in the vanguard of interior designers offering attractive and usable products.
From 1924 to 1965, Cooper decorated the interiors of large private residences, hotels, public spaces, government housing projects, and corporate headquarters as well as several modes of transport. He helped validate his chosen profession by setting standards and advocating solid business practices. He offered furniture, fabrics, and accessories for almost every pocket book.

Gendered Communication Among Second Generation Danish Americans In The "Blair Church:" A Study In Progress, John Mark Nielsen
Gendered Communication Among Second Generation Danish Americans In The "Blair Church:" A Study In Progress, John Mark Nielsen
The Bridge
I am not nor do I pretend to be an expert on gendered communication or feminist criticism. I have, however, used Carol Gilligan's In A Different Voice and Deborah Tannen's You Just Don't Understand in classes with good results.1 While students differ in their responses, these works are accessible to many and have inspired good discussion about how gender may affect decision-making and impact the way messages are sent and received. Additionally, I have found writings by Peggy McIntosh, Carol Smith-Rosenberg, and Barbara Welter helpful in exploring and thinking about the writings of American women writers of the pre-Civil War …
Soul For Sale: An Empirical Study Of Associate Satisfaction, Law Firm Culture, And The Effects Of Billable Hour Requirements, Susan Saab Fortney
Soul For Sale: An Empirical Study Of Associate Satisfaction, Law Firm Culture, And The Effects Of Billable Hour Requirements, Susan Saab Fortney
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
Although billable hour pressure has taken a toll on partners as well as associates, associates appear to be the most disenchanted casualties of the billable hour derby. In discussing attorney dissatisfaction, some authors have relied on the results of studies of law students and attorneys, noting that there is a limited amount of empirical data on the state of the profession. In an attempt to help fill the gap, I conducted an empirical study to gauge the effects of billable hour pressure and practices on the current crop of associates.
The information obtained in my study provides guidance in both …
The Evolving Judicial Role In Child Custody Disputes: From Fault Finder To Conflict Manager To Differential Case Management, Andrew Schepard
The Evolving Judicial Role In Child Custody Disputes: From Fault Finder To Conflict Manager To Differential Case Management, Andrew Schepard
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
The judiciary's role in divorce related child custody disputes has been transformed in the latter half of the twentieth century in response to the changing characteristics of American families, changing perceptions of the needs of children, and an overwhelming case load increase. The transformation occurred in two distinct phases, and a third is currently in process.
In Phase I, from the late 1960s (the beginning of widespread "no fault" divorce) to 1980, the child custody court was a fault finder functioning through adversary procedure. The court's job was to identify a single custodial parent and assign that parent primary legal …

Intervention Selection For Students With Asperger's Disorder, Tracy Lynn Gappa
Intervention Selection For Students With Asperger's Disorder, Tracy Lynn Gappa
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The diagnosis of Asperger's Disorder (AsD) is a relatively recent possibility. Although first described in 1944, AsD was not recognized until its inclusion in the Fourth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders in 1994. Due to the newness of the disorder and because of a lack of a consensual definition, there is considerable confusion among researchers in this field. For those children with characteristics of AsD, the confusion has resulted in misdiagnosis and, more importantly, inappropriate interventions. Individuals with AsD have deficits in several areas that impair their ability to function normally in the educational environment, …

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The study was designed to examine the effectiveness of self-monitoring as an intervention for a preschooler with aggressive behaviors. It specifically looked at treatment effects, parent and teacher evaluations of self-monitoring as a technique, the user-friendliness of self-monitoring, and adult time required to implement the intervention. The subject was Darin, a preschool-aged boy who attended a daycare affiliated with a Midwestern laboratory school. Other subjects included Darin's mother, his two main teachers at the daycare, and multiple aides at the daycare. Darin demonstrated aggressive acts at a high frequency in both the home and school settings. A self-monitoring intervention was …

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This study was designed to examine the effects of external rewards on students' intrinsic motivation to read and reading achievement. It specifically looked at how a reading incentive program affects students' motivational beliefs, time spent in out-of-school reading, and reading achievement. Participants included 83 fourth and fifth grade students from a rural elementary school in Midwestern Iowa. Participants were divided into three groups based on time spent in out-of-school reading before the incentive program was implemented. Specifically, the three groups were: high. middle, and low intrinsic reading groups. The dependent variables in this study included time spent in out-of school …

Ethics, Truth, And Justice In Criminal Litigation, Monroe H. Freedman
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
In this symposium, the editors of the Fordhiam Law Review present an important collection of articles on ethics, truth, and justice in criminal litigation. All of these Articles explore what the applicable standards of professional conduct mean and should mean as applied to prosecutors and defense attorneys. Although the authors participating in this symposium previously presented the substance of their Articles in a series of panel discussions-one on prosecutorial ethics and another on criminal defense ethics-which took place at the Association of American Law Schools Annual Meeting in January 2000, these Articles represent more detailed versions of their presentations.

Sex And Gender Through An Analytic Eye: Butler On Freud And Gender Identity, Anna Gullickson '00
Sex And Gender Through An Analytic Eye: Butler On Freud And Gender Identity, Anna Gullickson '00
Honors Projects
In her book. Gender Trouble, Judith Butler reinforces the conception held by many feminist philosophers that gender identity is not natural but rather culturally-constructed. Butler supports this conception of gender mainly by reading (and misreading) Freud. I will undertake a critical reconstruction of Butler's claims about gender identity which are based on Freud. In order to complete this project, I will outline (J) currents of feminism leading us to this question of the constructedness of gender, (2) Freud's theories, especially his account of sexual development and (3) two of Butler's main criticisms of Freud. Through this exploration, I will explain …

National Political Influence And The Catholic Church, Jennifer Nash '00
Honors Projects
Previous literature has focused on the political importance ofthe Catholic Church within democratic transitions, while little research has followed the role ofthe Church in post transitional settings. The present research acknowledges a marked variation in the political influence among the national Churches of Poland, Brazil, Hungary and Spain following the institution of democracy. Within the national context, the Church's religious mission, the association ofthe Church with the former regime and the influence of the International Catholic Church emerge as explanatory factors.

Vse Luchshe Detiam: All The Best To The Children, Soviet Ideology In Children's Fairy Tale Cartoons, Matthew Boyd '00
Honors Projects
I have chosen as a focus the analysis of fairy tale cartoons in the Soviet Union and have attempted to establish the specific ideological use of five films spanning 1947-1979. For the analysis of these cartoons as ideological tools I have established a theoretical apparatus. This apparatus is based upon a thorough definition of ideology as it applies to these films taken from Terry Eagleton's book Ideology. I have adopted Vladimir Propp's theoretical apparatus on the classification of fairytales from his book Morphology of the Folktale. To aid both in interpreting the history of the 1920s to 1970s Soviet Union …
Loneliness And Self-Esteem At Different Levels Of The Self, Kiley L. Bednar '00
Loneliness And Self-Esteem At Different Levels Of The Self, Kiley L. Bednar '00
Honors Projects
Loneliness is proposed to have three dimensions: isolation, connectedness, and belongingness (Hawkley, et aI., 1999). In an extension of the work by Hawkley and colleagues (1999), these levels are hypothesized to be a function of three unique aspects of self: personal, relational, and collective. Brewer (1996) proposed that self-esteem is experienced differently at each level of self. Personal self-esteem is how a person feels about himself or herself based on his or her individual traits and characteristics. Relational self-esteem is based on whether a person believes that he or she exhibits appropriate behavior in a one-on-one relationship. Collective self-esteem is …
Design Models For Multimedia Learning Environments Based On Interactive Drama, Thomas John Rogers
Design Models For Multimedia Learning Environments Based On Interactive Drama, Thomas John Rogers
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
Interactive multimedia offers a degree of richness that lies outside the scope of conventional design methods for computer based learning. This research seeks to develop an interdisciplinary approach to design, that recognises the ways in which the combination and integration of different media forms can be exploited to stimulate experiential, intuitive, perceptual, and social/communicative aspects of learning. The goal of the project has been to develop a conceptual design model for the development of multimedia learning environments (MLEs), for humanistic learning applications, by using interactive drama. The models and methods developed though a practical design project have been founded upon …

Me Vs. Myself Vs. I (Honors), Dan Witte
Compositions
Sigmund Freud, father of modern day psychology had a theory that the mind was divided into three sections. Two of these sections were subconscious, and the other was our conscience. He divided the subconscious into the Super Ego and the Id, and he labeled our conscience the Ego. The Super Ego represents our closed-minded pessimistic side often instilled upon us by our parents and society. This is not necessarily a bad thing; rather it is what makes us do things in a proper, rational, and secure fashion. The Id is our primal side. It is often the drive behind our …

The Freedom Of Information Act, 1997: Some Observations, Anita Crowdle
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
The Freedom of Information Act 1997 was considered to be a vital part of the daily running within the child care organisation that I was working in and came to my attention whilst working in the caring field in the academic year of 1997/98. As it was my first post within the field of social care, having graduated from college in Athlone just that year with a Diploma, I was fortunate to "grow up" with the Act. Meanwhile the organisation and its staff gained the knowledge and training to make the necessary preparations and changes for the Acts implementation. This …
