A Summer Reading Program For The Educational Enrichment Of Fourth Grade Students, Heather Taylor Jan 2000

A Summer Reading Program For The Educational Enrichment Of Fourth Grade Students, Heather Taylor

Honors Capstones

In order to create a worthwhile reading program, various topics must be researched and discussed. A beneficial reading program does not just consist of reading and discussing a text. Rather, multiple aspects must be included in the program. In researching the topics of reading and writing, a wide variety of results formed both the basis for this paper and for the program itself Instead of specifically researching information on developing reading programs, the research for this program revolved around various topics that would aid in increasing both reading interest and reading comprehension. Increasing these two favors has become the major …

The Significance Of The Category "Insect" For Folk Biological Classification Systems, Eraldo Medeiros Costa-Neto Jan 2000

The Significance Of The Category "Insect" For Folk Biological Classification Systems, Eraldo Medeiros Costa-Neto

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

In most human societies, the term "insect" denotes a category that includes organisms other than those of the Linnaean class Insecta, such as bats, snakes, toads, spiders, lizards, scorpions, and slugs. Such a pattern of ethnozoological classification occurs because human beings tend to project feelings of noisomeness, danger, disgust, and disdain toward some non-insect animals (including people) by allocating them to the culturally determined category "insect". Metaphors related to this lexeme highlight the negative aspects that are normally associated with real or imaginary perceptions of "insects". This article briefly discusses this cultural pattern. It is suggested that researchers who carry …

Confronting Constitutional Contradictions : A Study Of The War On Drugs In America, W. Steven Edmonds Jan 2000

Confronting Constitutional Contradictions : A Study Of The War On Drugs In America, W. Steven Edmonds

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Of the people, by the people, for the people stated in the Declaration of Independence in 1776 is what the framers of the Constitution had in mind. It was the intention to establish a framework that would create sound and just government. It held a bill of rights that provided examples for the world to follow. Unfortunately, the United States fails its own declaration when considering some of its policy and legislation. When examining drug policy, it is apparent that these laws were not of the people, by the people, or for the people, and in fact are contrary to …

Leg Ornamentation And The Efficacy Of Courtship Display In Four Species Of Wolf Spider (Araneae: Lycosidae), Eileen Hebets, George W. Uetz

Eileen Hebets Publications

This study used both correlative and experimental video playback methods to test the hypothesis that the secondary sexual traits of male wolf spiders act to increase the efficacy of visual courtship displays. Direct observations of courtship of several lycosid genera and a review of the literature revealed a significant association between ornamentation and visual courtship displays. This suggests that the ornamentation may be playing the role of amplifier for a visual display. To test this hypothesis, male courtship behaviors of four Schizocosa species were experimentally manipulated using video-imaging techniques. Females of species with non-visually displaying, non-ornamented males (Schizocosa duplex …
