Dawning Of The Age Of Quantitative/Empirical Methods In Accounting Research: Evidence From The Leading Authors Of The Accounting Review, 1966-1985, Robert James Fleming, Joel E. Thompson

Accounting Historians Journal

This study documents changes that took place in The Accounting Review during 1966-1985 compared with earlier 20-year periods, 1926-1945 and 1946-1965. The comparisons are based on examining the articles published in The Accounting Review and written by its leading authors (i.e., those authors who published the most articles). The article considers topics, research methods, financial accounting subtopics, citation analyses (including influential journals, articles, books, and authors), length, author background, and other items. This study shows that The Accounting Review evolved into a journal with demanding acceptance standards whose leading authors were highly educated accounting academics who, to a large degree, …

Building The Canadian Chartered Accountancy Profession: A Biography Of George Edwards, Fca, Cbe, Lld, 1861-1947, Alan John Richardson Jan 2000

Building The Canadian Chartered Accountancy Profession: A Biography Of George Edwards, Fca, Cbe, Lld, 1861-1947, Alan John Richardson

Accounting Historians Journal

George Edwards was a key figure in the creation of the modern institutional structure of accounting in Canada. He worked to implement a vision of accountancy as a profession rather than a business. This was reflected in his commitment to accounting education, to the restriction of entry to the CA profession to those who passed a test of competency, and to his desire to demonstrate the social and ethical value of accounting. He was president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario, president of the Dominion Association of CAs, and president of the Society of Cost Accountants of Canada. …

Prescriptive Travel And Adventure-Based Activities As Adjuncts To Counselling, Jeffery A. Kottler, Marilyn J. Montgomery Jan 2000

Prescriptive Travel And Adventure-Based Activities As Adjuncts To Counselling, Jeffery A. Kottler, Marilyn J. Montgomery

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

One of the greatest challenges for counsellors is finding ways to promote constructive client actions outside sessions (Shelton & Levy, 1981). Often, clients perform well during therapeutic encounters but have difficulty applying what they have learned to real life situations (Stokes & Baer, 1977). In fact, inability to generalize learning is one of the most frequent problems encountered in our field (Rose, 1989).

Some of our most difficult and resistant clients are those who appear compliant, cooperative, eager, and solicitous in sessions but don't translate insights into action in their lives (Kottler, 1992), and don't continue their progress after treatment …

Neural Network Learning Theory Integrates Behavior Therapy And Behavior Genetics, Warren W. Tryon Jan 2000

Neural Network Learning Theory Integrates Behavior Therapy And Behavior Genetics, Warren W. Tryon

Psychology Faculty Publications

This article makes several preliminary points prior to presenting two examples of how Neural Network Learning Theory (NNLT) integrates behavior therapy and behavior genetics. I will argue that NNLT is both a cognitive and behavioral theory; that neither cognitive nor behavior theory informs us about biological, including genetic, factors; and that NNLT provides and understanding of how biological, including genetic, factors influence psychology and behavior. I use the term integration to mean that NNLT provides a single vocabulary and set of explanatory concepts consistent with the broad spectrum of behavioral and cognitive therapies and informs us as to how genetics …

Personal Philosophical Perspective On Educational Leadership For Secondary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Deborah L. Padomek Jan 2000

Personal Philosophical Perspective On Educational Leadership For Secondary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Deborah L. Padomek

Graduate Research Papers

Every child deserves the best possible education we can provide them. Burdick, Pond, & Yamamoto (1994) found that too many persons leave our educational system at both the secondary and collegiate levels unequipped with the vocational skills, the self-understanding and career decision-making skills, or the work attitudes that are essential for making a successful transition from school to work. It is important to teach students skills necessary for future employment, and also teach them the importance of being critical thinkers and applying previous learning.

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this study is to compare the actual achievement of 28 students from the Appalachian area over a three year period with their scores on the SON-R to assess if the instrument is a valid predictor of classroom achievement among culturally impaired youth. The subjects were 11 boys and 17 girls ranging from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, lower-middle class backgrounds, and middle-class backgrounds. Correlation of the SON-R raw score with GPA was moderate at .54 and significant at the .01 level. Correlation of SON-R Subtest scores with GPA were moderate for Mosaics (r= . 47, p< 05), Categories (r= .51, p< 01) and Patterns (r= .54, p< 01).

The Effects Of Anxiety Management And Study Skills Training On Test Anxiety In College Students, Karen Carter-Harvey

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study measured the effects of anxiety management and study skills training on test anxiety in college students. Twenty-one college students from two sections of Introductory Sociology were involved in the study. The Test Anxiety Inventory (TAI) and exam scores were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the training. Pre-test, post-test, and delayed post-test measures were obtained. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated no significant difference on TAI scores or exam scores between the control and experimental groups. Recommendations for further research are given.
