Toward An Understanding Of Academic And Nonacademic Tasks Procrastinated By Students: The Use Of Daily Logs, Steven Scher, Joseph Ferrrari Jan 2000

Toward An Understanding Of Academic And Nonacademic Tasks Procrastinated By Students: The Use Of Daily Logs, Steven Scher, Joseph Ferrrari

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

For five consecutive days, at either the beginning or the end of a term, college students (30 women, 7 men) listed daily academic and nonacademic tasks they intended to complete and whether they actually completed them. Students reported nonacademic tasks (e.g., household chores, making telephone calls, exercising, and playing sports) as completed most often regardless of the time within the term. Results from 2 (early vs. later sessions) by 2 (completed vs. not completed tasks) by 2 (academic vs. nonacademic tasks) ANOVAs found that procrastinated tasks early in the term were more effortful and anxiety provoking than any other task …

Processes As Theory In Information Systems Research, Kevin Crowston Jan 2000

Processes As Theory In Information Systems Research, Kevin Crowston

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

Many researchers have searched for evidence of organizational improvements from the huge sums invested in ICT. Unfortunately, evidence for such a pay back is spotty at best (e.g., Brynjolfsson, 1994; Meyer and Gupta, 1994; Brynjolfsson and Hitt, 1998). On the other hand, at the individual level, computing and communication technologies are increasingly merging into work in ways that make it impossible to separate the two (Gasser, 1986; Zuboff, 1988; Bridges, 1995). This problem—usually referred to as the productivity paradox—is an example of a more pervasive issue—linking phenomena and theories from different levels of analysis. Organizational processes provide a bridge between …

Exposing The ‘Pretty Woman’ Myth: A Qualitative Investigation Of The Lives Of Female Streetwalkers, Rochelle L. Dalla Dr.

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Intensive interviews were conducted with 43 women involved in street-walking prostitution. Data were analyzed according to Phenomenological Descriptive Analysis, results of which are presented in two parts. Detailed accounts of the lives of a subgroup of 5 participants are described first, followed by a broader discussion of results including the entire sample of 43. Themes common across the larger group are presented int three segments, including (a) early development, (b) life in "the game," and (c) leaving the streets. Implications for advocacy and further research are presented.

Mis Legitimacy And The Proposition Of A New Multi-Dimensional Model Of Mis, Gondy Leroy, Paul Benjamin Lowry, H. Wayne Anderson, Dennis C. Wilson, Lin Lin Jan 2000

Mis Legitimacy And The Proposition Of A New Multi-Dimensional Model Of Mis, Gondy Leroy, Paul Benjamin Lowry, H. Wayne Anderson, Dennis C. Wilson, Lin Lin

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

This paper addresses the definition of MIS and the legitimacy of MIS as an academic discipline. Both sides of the MIS legitimacy debate are presented, with the authors embracing the diversity of MIS as a strength that enhances the legitimacy of the MIS discipline. Based on the diversity theory of MIS, the authors propose a new-multidimensional model of MIS that presents a new way of looking at the discipline and the researchers who work in it.

Rising Off The Plateau In Learning Arabic, Daniel Scott Linquist Jan 2000

Rising Off The Plateau In Learning Arabic, Daniel Scott Linquist

MA TESOL Collection

Experiencing plateaus in second language learning is a common experience, especially for language student studying Arabic or one of the other languages considered more difficult. Some of the causes for the plateau experience in Arabic are its complex grammar, its vast amount of vocabulary, and the different roles of Modern Standard Arabic and the spoken dialects of Arabic.

Rising off the Plateau in Studying Arabic is a thesis project, which analyzes this second language learner’s attempt to make significant progress in studying Modern Standard Arabic. The project was based on a self-directed, semi-intensive Arabic language program, which prioritized the reading …

The Effect Of Educational Kinesiology On Second Language Acquisition, Tina Lynne Haverstick Jan 2000

The Effect Of Educational Kinesiology On Second Language Acquisition, Tina Lynne Haverstick

MA TESOL Collection

This thesis is a summary of my experience working with the theory of Educational Kinesiology (Edu-K) in the foreign language classroom environment. It may serve as a guide for anyone who is interested in tapping into the full potential of students’ brains within a structured learning environment.

A case study is presented here examining the effects of educational kinesiology on two groups of kindergarten students I taught simultaneously in my EFL classroom in Taiwan.

I chose to assess their attitudes toward different classroom activities, including those geared toward improving listening, speaking, reading and writing, as well as the overall attitude …

Reflective Teaching: In-Sights Into The Process And Development Of The Skill Of Reflection, Marie-Claude M. Durand Jan 2000

Reflective Teaching: In-Sights Into The Process And Development Of The Skill Of Reflection, Marie-Claude M. Durand

MA TESOL Collection

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate and document the stages and levels of reflection based on the Millett, Rogers, & Stanley Framework for Reflection as they manifested in the working lives and professional contextual realities of three experienced teachers. Their Framework is a four-step model of reflection that looks at the reflective cycle in terms of the stages of Experience, description, Analysis, and Intelligent Action. It further categorizes the skill of reflection in terms of Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced levels. The second goal of the study was to examine the development of the reflective process in a …
