The Role Of The Internet Entrepreneur In The Information Economy, Neal Hauser Apr 2000

The Role Of The Internet Entrepreneur In The Information Economy, Neal Hauser

Theses and Graduate Projects

The information economy and the Internet entrepreneur are two significant developments of the late 20th century. This theoretical study seeks to understand the connection between the two phenomena. From a perspective of leadership it is critical to understand the relationship between individual actors and a system, and the implications of their interaction on the world. The research question asks whether Internet entrepreneurs are active creators of the information economy, or are they a creation of the information economy?

Central to answering the research question are the theoretical concepts of active and passive human agency. Active human agency proposes that the …

Individual Or Shared Entrepreneurship: The Influence Of Personal Leadership Style, Susan M. James

Theses and Graduate Projects

A key issue faced by new entrepreneurs is selection of a business structure. Overwhelmingly, one of two options is chosen: sole proprietorship or shared partnership. Personal leadership style, encompassing personal values, an individual definition of success, and possession of entrepreneurial traits, impacts the ultimate decision. Through a woman's perspective, selection of a business structure through definition of personal leadership style is examined in this paper.

A Discussion Of Response Distortion In Personality Tests And Its Effect On Criterion Validity And Applicant Ranking In Employee Selection, Mary E. Stacke Apr 2000

A Discussion Of Response Distortion In Personality Tests And Its Effect On Criterion Validity And Applicant Ranking In Employee Selection, Mary E. Stacke

Theses and Graduate Projects

Personality testing is widely used in the employee selection process, particularly to determine leadership potential for management positions. Recent research has established personality tests as potentially valuable predictors of job performance. However, a reliance upon personality testing in the employment setting raises a common concern about the prevalence of response distortion and its effect on criterion validity and applicant ranking.

This paper provides background information on personality definition and construct validity and then discusses the two primary types of response distortion, self-deception and impression management. Areas of focus include the prevalence of impression management in personality testing for employee selection, …

African-American And White Female Homicide Offenders: Women Who Kill Intimate Partners Versus Non-Intimate Partners In Chicago Between 1980-1995, Shauntey James Apr 2000

African-American And White Female Homicide Offenders: Women Who Kill Intimate Partners Versus Non-Intimate Partners In Chicago Between 1980-1995, Shauntey James

Dissertations

The research that examines female homicide offenders goes little further than investigating whether or not offenders were previously victimized by those whom they kill. This research project is designed to contribute to this extant body of literature and theory in two ways. The first is to add and provide a comprehensive picture of African-American and white female homicide offenders in intimate versus non-intimate relationships in homicidal events. The second manner of contribution lies in the testing of a creative and integrative theoretical model. This model addresses race, underclass context, alcohol use, social disorganization and prior arrest record of female homicide …

Some Questions For Civil Society-Revivalists, Linda C. Mcclain, James E. Fleming Apr 2000

Some Questions For Civil Society-Revivalists, Linda C. Mcclain, James E. Fleming

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This Article raises some questions for proponents of reviving civil society as a cure for many of our nation's political, civic, and moral ills (whom McClain and Fleming designate as "civil society-revivalists"). How does civil society serve as "seedbeds of virtue" and foster self-government? Have liberal conceptions of the person corroded civil society and undermined self-government? Does the revivalists' focus on the family focus on the right problems? Have gains in equality and liberty caused the decline of civil society? Should we revive civil society or "a civil society?" Would a revitalized civil society support democratic self-government or supplant it? …

The Moral Exclusivity Of The New Civil Society, Dorothy E. Roberts Apr 2000

The Moral Exclusivity Of The New Civil Society, Dorothy E. Roberts

Chicago-Kent Law Review

While commending civil society revivalists' commitment to freedom and equality, this Article argues that the revivalists' moral vision is marred by exclusivity. Roberts locates this moral exclusivity in a flawed account of the relationship between social inequality and moral decline. By discounting the importance of social justice for creating civic faith, involvement, and solidarity, the revivalists' proposals tend to benefit society's most privileged families.

Secondary objectives were to determine: (a) the perceived efficacy of currently available treatments, (b) the needs and expectations with regard to consultation and treatment, ( c) the perceived need of professionals with specialized knowledge of music and treating musicians, and …

Of Moons, Thongs, Holdings And Dicta: State V. Fly And The Rule Of Law, Thomas L. Fowler

Campbell Law Review

Section I of this Article reviews the facts of State v. Fly, North Carolina's law of indecent exposure prior to Fly and the Court of Appeals' decision. Section II analyzes the Supreme Court's opinion in Fly and the various rationales offered by the Court to justify its decision. Section III considers the plight of the trial judges in applying the principles, statements, and analysis announced in State v. Fly. Although trial judges must apply the rule of law, and therefore must abide by the "holding" in State v. Fly, this Article argues that trial judges have the same authority as …

Empathy And The Questioning Spirit In Liberal Education: Reports From The Field, Sara Varhus Apr 2000

Empathy And The Questioning Spirit In Liberal Education: Reports From The Field, Sara Varhus

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

Current justifications of liberal education usually take one of two tacks: itemizing the applicable skills that students derive from a liberal education, or asserting that it is liberal education that society must look to for the capacity for community or citizenship. The former is an argument probably worth making because it appeals to the preoccupations of students, parents, and employers, but it is the second that reveals the relevance, for our time, of liberal education. Bruce Kimball argues that this latter focus on the virtues instilled by education de-emphasizes rational inquiry and the individual pursuit of truth in what he …

The Shock Of The Strange, The Shock Of The Familiar: Learning From Study Abroad, Diane Levy Apr 2000

The Shock Of The Strange, The Shock Of The Familiar: Learning From Study Abroad, Diane Levy

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

I began writing this as I sat in a borrowed office in the outskirts of London on a strange computer with an unfamiliar keyboard. I blundered my way from my guest house after riding two buses and walking several blocks, London A to Z in hand. Cup of white tea and biscuits by,my side, I find that this is not a bad setting for writing about the adjustments of study abroad.
