Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. And Rev. Billy Graham: The Nature Of Man, J. Travis Paasch May 2000

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. And Rev. Billy Graham: The Nature Of Man, J. Travis Paasch

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

First, the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. moralized individual Christian activism to create dogmatically ethical changes in American society. Second, the Rev. Billy Graham prescribed that the only hope for humanity was in a personal reliance upon the puissant power of Christ's expiative. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate how these two individual's respective views concerning the nature of man do not allow them to have congruent ideas of social activism.

The Efficacy Of Group Bereavement Interventions: An Integrative Review Of The Research Literature, Jim D. Sharpnack

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study involves a meta-analysis of the extant English language literature reporting studies of the effectiveness of bereavement therapeutic interventions. Twenty-six studies (20 adult studies; 6 child studies) were located and served as the database for the current meta-analytic study. Questions asked of the studies in this meta-analysis included:

  1. Describe background variables of subjects seeking bereavement group interventions.
  2. Describe leader variables of persons leading bereavement group interventions.
  3. Describe intervention variables in bereavement group interventions.

The major finding of the meta-analysis was that children and adult experimental subjects benefitted from the grief interventions in comparison to their control counterparts. The ratio …

The Influence Of Parental Attributions And Parenting Behaviors On The Attributions Utilized By Children With And Without Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Brent R. Collett May 2000

The Influence Of Parental Attributions And Parenting Behaviors On The Attributions Utilized By Children With And Without Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Brent R. Collett

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Research suggests that the causal attributions utilized by children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) differ from those of nonclinical children. Additionally, research indicates differences among the mothers of children with and without ADHD regarding parenting behaviors and attributions for child behavior. In this study, children's attributions, maternal attributions, and maternal discipline styles were examined in ADHD and non-ADHD populations. Participants included 26 children diagnosed with ADHD and their mothers as well as a nonclinical sample of 24 children who had never been diagnosed with ADHD and their mothers. The results support the hypotheses that child and maternal attributions would differ between …

Financial Problems As Predictors Of Divorce: A Social Exchange Perspective, Jan D. Anderson May 2000

Financial Problems As Predictors Of Divorce: A Social Exchange Perspective, Jan D. Anderson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

By using a conceptual framework derived from social exchange theory, this study examined the relationship between financial problems and divorce. Nationally representative data from the "Marital Instability Over the Life Course" panel study was used to determine if financial problems reported at one interview could predict those who would divorce by the subsequent interview. A self-replicating design allowed data analyses for three separate time periods: 1980-1983, 1983- 1988, and 1988-1992.

The sample used in this study consisted of 1,620 married men and women under the age of 55. Additionally, the participants were in their first marriages.

Divorce was the only …

The Effects Of Family And Education Backgrounds On The Self-Identification Of Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Persons In Utah, Petra M. Rose

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study examined the effects of family and educational background factors on three dimensions of social identity among 35 deaf and hard-of-hearing respondents in Utah. Three dimensions of social identity-were distinguished: self-definition (i.e., the degree to which a respondent defined himself or herself as deaf), self-evaluation (i.e., the degree to which a respondent attached value and emotional significance to identifying himself or herself as deaf), and group introjection (i.e., the degree of commitment, belonging, and loyalty a respondent attached to membership in the Deaf community). Semi-structured, videotaped interviews were conducted with 35 deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in Utah. Respondents were …

The Geography Of Exploration: A Study In The Process Of Physical Exploration And Geographical Discovery, Joseph St.Onge May 2000

The Geography Of Exploration: A Study In The Process Of Physical Exploration And Geographical Discovery, Joseph St.Onge

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Exploration has been a common literary topic throughout the history of humans. However, much of this historical tradition has possessed a fairly narrow focus, emphasizing the drama and heroics of an individual explorer or concentrating on a description of a particular exploration. There has been little attempt at understanding the process of exploration and placing this important process in context with the historic and geographic phenomena that both affect and are affected by it. In this thesis, the author has broken the process of exploration down into a theoretical structure that is presented in a holistic model. This model has …

Motivation Among Students With Learning Disabilities, April H. Conti May 2000

Motivation Among Students With Learning Disabilities, April H. Conti

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine whether intrinsic motivation is a major factor in explaining academic performance deficits in children with learning disabilities. Harter's Scale of Intrinsic Versus Extrinsic Orientation in the Classroom was given to 34 students with learning disabilities and 36 students without learning disabilities from Grades 4 to 6 from a suburban, middle-class school district located in Southeastern New Jersey. It was proposed that students with learning disabilities were less intrinsically motivated than students without identified learning disabilities. However, the general pattern of results derived from a T-Test for Independent Samples did not show a …

Experiments In Social Salvation: The Settlement Movement In Chicago, 1890-1910, Janet Reed May 2000

Experiments In Social Salvation: The Settlement Movement In Chicago, 1890-1910, Janet Reed

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In this study, the settlement movement in Chicago is presented as a crucible for the development of Progressive reform. The subjective and objective necessities for social settlements are described through the lives of men and women central to the movement. Reformers such as Jane Addams, Graham Taylor, and Mary McDowell fused their personal motives to their expanding assumptions regarding public welfare in their pursuit of social salvation. The settlement community advanced a methodology of experimentation and flexibility, which was instrumental to the transformation of nineteenth century ideas of charity into the new twentieth century science of social work. The processes …

Opining On Death: Witness Sentence Recommendations In Capital Trials, Wayne A. Logan May 2000

Opining On Death: Witness Sentence Recommendations In Capital Trials, Wayne A. Logan

Scholarly Publications

Despite the Supreme Court's command that capital prosecutions be free of undue arbitrary and capricious influences, the trials themselves are becoming increasingly emotional and personalized. This Article addresses a key outgrowth of this evolution: the increasingly common practice of witnesses opining on whether a defendant should be put to death, despite the Court's apparent prohibition of such testimony. The Article addresses why this practice is likely to continue, and advances several reasons why the Supreme Court should impose an unequivocal bar on sentence opinion, testimony in capital trials.

Fish not, with this melancholy bait,
For this fool gudgeon, this opinion. …

Solidarity In Consumption, Cass R. Sunstein, Edna Ullmann-Margalit May 2000

Solidarity In Consumption, Cass R. Sunstein, Edna Ullmann-Margalit

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Contrary to a common picture of relationships in a market economy, people often express communal and membership-seeking impulses via consumption choices, purchasing goods and services because other people are doing so as well. Shared identities are maintained and created in this way. Solidarity goods are goods whose value increases as the number of people enjoying them increases. Exclusivity goods are goods whose value decreases as the number of people enjoying them increases. Distinctions can be drawn among diverse value functions, capturing diverse relationships between the value of goods and the value of shared or unshared consumption. Though markets spontaneously produce …

Prominent Signs Of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity In The Adult, Marcia Katz May 2000

Prominent Signs Of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity In The Adult, Marcia Katz

Master's Projects

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurophyschiatric syndrome which most commonly becomes apparent during the first few years of grade school. While it was previously thought that this disorder remitted before or during adolescence, it has become well established that many patients will have an illness course that persists well into adulthood. The purpose of this study was to determine the 10 most prominent symptoms of ADHD in the adult population. Using the Dunphy and Winland-Brown (1998) "Circle of Caring" conceptual framework and the Wender (1998) Utah Criteria Scale questionnaire, a convenience sample of females (N=l5) from northern California were …

Integrating Residential Care Facilities Into Neighborhoods, Leila H. Moncharsh May 2000

Integrating Residential Care Facilities Into Neighborhoods, Leila H. Moncharsh

Master's Projects

This report examines the issue of integrating residential care facilities (RCFs) into neighborhoods from three perspectives: legal, social scientific research, and from a zoning regulatatory approach. RCFs serve a wide range of disabled persons, but the report focuses mainly upon RCF clients who suffer from mental illness, AIDS/HIV, and drug addiction - i.e., the type of clients that most neighborhoods would not welcome. Rather than focusing, however, upon blaming neighbors or clients, this report deals with recognizing that there can be very real impacts from RCFs located in a neighborhood and looks at ways to address the impacts. The report …

Vernacular Letterforms: An Expression Of Cultural And Social Values, Georgiana Leite

Theses

This thesis investigates similar problem-solving processes used in the fields of graphic design and engineering, revealing an underlying relationship between the two disciplines. It shows the principles these two disciplines share and how they employ a common creative process. By comparing these two vastly different disciplines, an understanding of the methodology of thought is constructed.

The Trusted General Manager And Unit Performance: Empirical Evidence Of A Competitive Advantage, James H. Davis, F. David Schoorman, Roger C. Mayer, Hwee Hoon Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Employee trust for the general manager is proposed as an internal organizational characteristic that provides a competitive advantage for the firm. This paper empirically examines the relationship between trust for a business unit's general manager and organizational performance. Trust was found to be significantly related to sales, profits and employee turnover in the restaurant industry. Managers who were either more or less trusted differed significantly in perceptions of their ability, benevolence and integrity.

Toward The Differentiation Of Trust In Supervisor And Trust In Organization, Hwee Hoon Tan, Christy S. F. Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Trust in supervisor and trust in organization are argued to be distinct but related constructs, each with its own set of antecedents and outcomes. Empirical field results supported the proposition. Although trust in supervisor and trust in organization were positively and significantly correlated, trust in supervisor was more strongly associated with proximal variables (ability, benevolence, and integrity of supervisor), whereas trust in organization was more strongly correlated with global variables (perceived organizational support and justice). This conclusion held despite the inclusion of proximal variables in the regression on trust in organization and the inclusion of global variables in the regression …
