Restorative Services: Inventory Of Minnesota's Restorative Services And An Examination Of Integration Of Restorative Philosophy In Service Providers' Policies And Procedures, Deanna L. Mundt Steckman

Theses and Graduate Projects

Restorative services are offered in various settings where harm has occurred and, it has been unclear what is available in Minnesota. Minnesota, as a national leader in restorative justice, has been unable to compile a comprehensive list of restorative service providers until now. An open- and closed-ended questionnaire was sent to potential Minnesota restorative service providers. The intent was to determine what types of restorative services and models are practiced by what types of agencies, where services are provided, and to examine to what extent restorative philosophy values are integrated into agency policies. Various univariate and bivariate analysis were utilized. …

Policy Analysis Of Minnesota's Department Of Children, Families, And Learning Violence Prevention Plan, Todd S. Harvey

Theses and Graduate Projects

School violence has received major publicity in recent years due to several violent and premeditated school shootings that received national attention. Gallup polls have indicated over the past three years that school violence is the top concern of parents, resulting in increased public pressure upon school administrators and legislators to develop effective school violence prevention policy. This study examined the Minnesota Department of Children Families and Learning (CFL) official violence prevention plan entitled Unlearning Violence. The analysis compared Minnesota's plan with elements identified in the literature as critical and necessary to prevent violence. The results of the analysis found that …

Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of A Urinary Continence Program With Urinary Incontinent Rehabilitation Patients, Pat Emmons

Master's Projects

This study used a quasi-experimental design to evaluate the outcomes of a continence program in a rehabilitation center with patients receiving therapies (N=l2) and to evaluate the knowledge and attitudes of the rehabilitation staff (N=27) before and after reviewing a teaching module about urinary incontinence. Roy's adaptation theory was used as the conceptual framework for this research project. The tools used for data collection were: the Functional Independence Measure {FIM), daily 24 hour incontinence logs, pre/post true and false knowledge tests and pre/post staff attitude questionnaires. Eleven of the 12 patients admitted to the program had improved FIM scores and …

Culture Of Origin And Illness Attribution: The Implications Of Cross-Cultural Awareness For Health Care Professionals, Eri Matsumoto-Lyons May 2000

Culture Of Origin And Illness Attribution: The Implications Of Cross-Cultural Awareness For Health Care Professionals, Eri Matsumoto-Lyons

Master's Projects

People from different cultural backgrounds have different beliefs and perceptions concerning health and illness. Differing illness beliefs between health professionals and patients may result in conflicting expectations regarding treatment choice and outcome. This non-experimental research was designed to explore illness attribution among Caucasian, Hispanics, and Asians with chronic or acute illness. The results suggest that there was no significant difference in illness attribution beliefs between the three ethnic groups; however, primary language, years spent in U.S., and educational backgrounds were associated with differences in illness attribution. Health care providers must think of culture in a broader spectrum than just race …

Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of The "Youth Leadership" Class In The Prevention Of Adolescent Depression, Jacqueline Oria May 2000

Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of The "Youth Leadership" Class In The Prevention Of Adolescent Depression, Jacqueline Oria

Master's Projects

Depression in adolescence is a common and potentially life-threatening health problem. Depending upon the severity of symptoms, anywhere from 2% to 40% of teenagers are affected with depression (Sadler, 1993). The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of prevention strategies on decreasing the rate of depression in adolescents. It is hoped that a class addressing specific skills identified as having an impact on adolescent depression will affect the youth participating in the program.

Comorbidity Of Seasonal Affective Disorders With Schizophrenia In The Extreme North, Julie Ellen Doorack May 2000

Comorbidity Of Seasonal Affective Disorders With Schizophrenia In The Extreme North, Julie Ellen Doorack

Psychology

The purpose of this study was to provide estimates of the prevalence of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) among Alaska residents with schizophrenia and to evaluate the relation of SAD symptoms to symptoms of general depression, negative schizophrenia, and alcohol abuse. Nine (33%) of the subjects exceeded cut-off criteria for SAD. Assessment of depression supported the diagnostic classification of respondents who met cut-off criteria for SAD as depressed, but also supported conceptualizations of SAD as a syndrome separate from unipolar depression. Evaluation of negative symptoms of schizophrenia validated the divergence of SAD and depression symptoms from negative symptoms. Implications of this …

An Investigation Of The Effectiveness Of Human Resource Management In The Hong Kong Police, Chung Man Lam, Yuen Shan Leung, Wai Fung Tai

Bachelor Degree - Management - Final Year Project

In the literature, there is the increasing trend to link human resource planning with strategic planning giving greater importance to, and greater involvement of, human resource management in organization strategy. Also the Hong Kong Police is a manpower oriented discipline force and the human resource management functions play a critical role in the effective management of these human resources. Therefore, the critical nature of the human resource management of the Hong Kong Police justifies a management report orientation where the focus is on the production of positive and practical recommendations.

The objectives of the report are to evaluate the effectiveness …

Perceived Parental Drinking Patterns Among Adult Alcoholics In Residential Treatment, Victor John Behling May 2000

Perceived Parental Drinking Patterns Among Adult Alcoholics In Residential Treatment, Victor John Behling

Psychology

Drinking in Alaska has almost reached epidemic proportions in some subcultures. Alaska Natives have the highest number of FAS cases as compared to non-Natives. Nationally, youth drinking has been correlated to parental drinking. This study addressed the issue of whether there is a difference between the perceived drinking of people in treatment by gender, age, and ethnicity. The parental drinking of one hundred and thirty-four people diagnosed as alcohol dependent or alcohol abusers and in treatment was examined. Significant differences were found between the perceived parental drinking by age, gender, and ethnicity. In addition, many of the subjects did not …

Adaptation Of Engineering Education In Emerging Technological Revolution: A Review, Casmir I. Agbaraji May 2000

Adaptation Of Engineering Education In Emerging Technological Revolution: A Review, Casmir I. Agbaraji

Engineering

The future of engineering education has been a subject of concern in past years. There is no doubt that changes are needed to keep abreast with the new tools of technology and business, and to attract students. The planning of curricula should be governed by the definition of an engineer as the creator for public goods and by the demands of the industry. The tools that were available for engineering education in the past, those that are being presently used, and the techniques that dominate in the twenty-first century are analyzed. The problems associated with the new engineering education are …

Cognitive Learning In The Presence Of Immediacy: An Exploratory Study Of The Relationship Between Perceived And Actual Cognitive Learning And Nonverbal Immediacy, Keli Hite Mcgee May 2000

Cognitive Learning In The Presence Of Immediacy: An Exploratory Study Of The Relationship Between Perceived And Actual Cognitive Learning And Nonverbal Immediacy, Keli Hite Mcgee

Communication

The immediacy construct continues to be a hot topic in Instructional Communication. It is shown repeatedly to positively affect student perceptions of the classroom. Although student perceptions of the classroom are important for a more conducive learning environment, increasing student learning is also important. The effects of teacher immediacy on cognitive learning are still unclear due largely in part to the inability to consistently and accurately assess actual learning. Many studies relate cognitive learning to immediacy, but the primary use of student self-reports to measure cognitive learning limits the interpretation to student perceptions of their learning rather than necessarily actual …

"The Winter's Tale": Leontes' Derangement And The Chronotope Of Melancholy, David Houston Wood May 2000

"The Winter's Tale": Leontes' Derangement And The Chronotope Of Melancholy, David Houston Wood

English

To recent critical formulations regarding melancholy and its role in the Renaissance humoral body, this project contributes the argument that melancholy's trajectory from its natural to its unnatural state carries with it a fundamental shift in temporal-senses. I illustrate this shift through close analysis of Leontes' derangement in Shakespeare's 'The winter's tale.' Based on Renaissance physiological texts, as well as modern psychoanalytic, anthropological, and gender studies, I explore how melancholy's inherent volatility signifies the masculine anxieties of early modern English patriarchy. I argue that melancholy's bifurcated temporal-senses serve to clarify the subjectivity of Renaissancee passions.

Analysis Of The Vocalizations Of Orcinus Orca In Response To Anthropogenic Noise, Carolyn Elizabeth Talus May 2000

Analysis Of The Vocalizations Of Orcinus Orca In Response To Anthropogenic Noise, Carolyn Elizabeth Talus

Fisheries

Underwater noise created by vessel traffic in the world's oceans may be detrimental to marine life that relies on acoustic senses for survival. An analytical study was completed which examined changes in vocal behavior of subpod A36, killer whales (Orcinus orca) that reside off Vancouver Island. The average call rate of each call type was calculated from the recordings, and call rates were found to significantly decrease in the presence of vessel noise. Structural characteristics of specific call types such as differences in frequency, duration, and harmonics were also examined and statistically compared with and without boat noise. Differences found …

The Role Of The School Social Worker With English Language Learner Students In Suburban Elementary Schools, Pamela Sue Storry

Theses and Graduate Projects

This descriptive study explores the role of the school social worker with English Language Learner (ELL) students in suburban elementary schools. It has become increasingly more common for classrooms to have students who do not speak English and spend part of their school day in an English Language Learner class. The purpose of the study is to provide information and awareness of immigrant issues to school districts, social workers and teachers. Three school districts with similar demographics, northwest suburbs of a metropolitan area, participated in the study. A survey that included both quantitative and qualitative questions, focused on the role …

Sleight Of Hand: A Mystery Unveiled, Claudia Mederos May 2000

Sleight Of Hand: A Mystery Unveiled, Claudia Mederos

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is an exploration in painting via approximately one hundred small works in acrylic, gouache, and graphite on paper. The written discussion clarifies my approach to this body of work: how it was conceived, the use of materials, as well as its purpose.

More specifically, I look toward the contemporary proliferation of visual media along with the concept of "art for art's sake" as influences. Surrealism and the revelation of the subconscious mind through painting are central topics. A tendency toward introspection, and subliminal sexuality along with the subconscious direction of mind, are brought to light by the use …

The Role Of Education In The Treatment Of Chronic Pain Patients: A Quantitative Study Of Factors That Influence The Self -Management Of Chronic Pain, Donna L. Agan Edd May 2000

The Role Of Education In The Treatment Of Chronic Pain Patients: A Quantitative Study Of Factors That Influence The Self -Management Of Chronic Pain, Donna L. Agan Edd

Dissertations

The factors involved in the successful self-management of chronic pain are not well understood. Many issues complicate addressing these factors. Individual suffering, exhaustion of family resources, and the costs to society for medical care, lost wages, welfare and disability benefits demand increasingly more resources each year. At the micro level, patients who live the daily rigors of chronic pain want medical science to solve their malady. At the macro level, health plan administrators want their patients to successfully self-manage pain with the least medical intervention and cost, because they know a cure is not probable. In the middle, the medical …

Gambling Addiction And Personality Type, Michael Athanasios Gatis

Theses and Dissertations

Twenty-six students from a state university in New Jersey were administered the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) form M in order to examine the relationship between gambling addiction and personality types. A chi-square test was performed at a 95 percent significance in order to determine if statistically significant relationships existed among the following: the relationship between personality types of gamblers within the group, the relationship between the personality types of non-gamblers within the group, and finally the relationship between the personality types of gamblers and non-gamblers between groups. No statistically significant relationships were found; …
