Factors Associated With The Quality Of Life Of Persons With Spinal Cord Injuries – A Focus Group Study, Yuh Jang, Yen-Ho Wang, Cheng-Fen Yu, Chi-Wen Chung, Jung-Der Wang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The primary purpose of this qualitative study was designed to identify, from a client and medical personnel perspective, factors that associated with the quality of life of patients with spinal cord injuries (SCI). Three focus groups were recruited and conducted: newly injured patients, patients with a chronic SCI, and medical personnel who worked with these patients. Responses were audio taped, transcribed, and analyzed by pattern coding according to domains and facets of Taiwan version of WHOQOL-BREF. The results indicated that the meaning of quality of life is a subjective perception of their position in life that is influenced by physical …

Kidnaping Of Juveniles: Patterns From Nibrs., David Finkelhor, Richard Ormrod

Crimes Against Children Research Center

The kidnaping of children has generated a great deal of public concern, not to mention confusion and controversy. These crimes, from the kidnaping of the Lindbergh baby to the abduction and murder of Adam Walsh, have been some of the most notorious and highly publicized news stories of recent history, occupying a central place in the fears and anxieties of parents. Yet, an ongoing debate has raged over how frequently such crimes occur, which children are most at risk, and who the primary offenders are.

Examining The Relationships Among Concepts Of Control And Exercise Attendance, Kimberley A. Dawson, Lawrence R. Brawley, James E. Maddux Jun 2000

Examining The Relationships Among Concepts Of Control And Exercise Attendance, Kimberley A. Dawson, Lawrence R. Brawley, James E. Maddux

Kinesiology and Physical Education Faculty Publications

Many researchers in psychology and physical activity have discussed the overlap among control constructs in various theories. Skinner (1996) proposed an integrative control framework based on an agent-means-ends distinction that offered comparisons among and more explicit measurement of 3 control constructs—control, capacity, and strategy beliefs. No study in the exercise domain has yet empirically examined these advantages. This study evaluated Skinner’s framework relative to their contribution to predicting exercise attendance. A prospective design was used to consider the potential change in the nature of the relationships. High correlations (range r = .52-.88) at 2 time points in the exercise program …

Perceived Control, Voluntariness And Emotional Reactions In Relocated Areas Of Russia, Ukraine And Belarus, Carol Jeniffer Figueiredo, Britt-Marie Drottz-Sjöberg

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

[Excerpt] "The Chernobyl accident occurred at a time of considerable social and economic changes in the former Soviet Union. The contamination due to the accident still covers parts of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. Some areas were considered too contaminated to suit long-term human settlement and a considerable number of people were therefore moved from their homes and resettled in other areas. Resettlement policies often differed between the states. Some variations in state policy included the duration before implementation of the decision to resettle people from certain areas, the swiftness of the transition, and the acceptance of personal initiatives in the …

Varied Definitions Of Risk Related To Sensation Seeking Trait, Pål Ø.U. Dåstol, Britt-Marie Drottz-Sjöberg

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

[Excerpt] "Risk judgments seem related to which definitions of risk a person uses. Earlier studies suggest that people who use a "probability" definition of risk give different, and somewhat lower, subjective estimates of risk than those who instead prefer a "consequence" definition. In addition, an "optimistic bias" often can be found, and subjects usually evaluate personal risk systematically lower than risk for people in general."

"Preface" To Negotiating Adolescence In Times Of Social Change, Lisa J. Crockett, Rainer K. Silbereisen Jun 2000

"Preface" To Negotiating Adolescence In Times Of Social Change, Lisa J. Crockett, Rainer K. Silbereisen

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

In February 1996, a diverse group of social scientists (psychologists, sociologists, and anthropologists) from Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States convened at the Pennsylvania State University to discuss the ways in which social change may affect adolescent development, the likely consequences for adolescent functioning and well-being, and the kinds of social interventions needed to support healthy development in a changing society. Entitled "Negotiating Adolescence in Times of Social Change," the conference was organized to consider the abrupt and more gradual social changes affecting Western industrialized countries. Drawing on the ecological and life course perspectives, we were especially interested …

Mixing At Young Ages Reduces Fighting In Unacquainted Domestic Pigs, Anton D. Pitts, Daniel M. Weary, Edmond A. Pajor, David Fraser Jun 2000

Mixing At Young Ages Reduces Fighting In Unacquainted Domestic Pigs, Anton D. Pitts, Daniel M. Weary, Edmond A. Pajor, David Fraser

Agonistic Behavior Collection

Under normal farming practices, piglets from different litters are often mixed around the time of weaning, and a high incidence of fighting and minor injuries often occur. The aim of this experiment was to determine the effect of age on the incidence of fighting in piglets mixed before weaning, at different ages between 5 and 26 days. We found no significant relationship between age and the likelihood that a pair of piglets would fight during the first 75 min after mixing. However, the duration of the first fight observed increased from 101±38 s at 5 days to 621±278 s at …

Dosso Dossi, Garofalo, And The Costabili Polyptych: Imaging Spiritual Authority, Giancarlo Fiorenza Jun 2000

Dosso Dossi, Garofalo, And The Costabili Polyptych: Imaging Spiritual Authority, Giancarlo Fiorenza

Art and Design

Recent debate over the chronology of the Costabili polyptych, painted for the high altar of S. Andrea in Ferrara, has overlooked the broader question of interpretation regarding its genesis following Ferrara's participation in the Cambrai Wars. This essay analyzes how the altarpiece negotiates the concept of "just war" while communicating God's peace and salvation. Especially relevant to interpreting the imagery are the writings of Andrea Baura and Antonio Meli, two contemporary Augustinian friars from S. Andrea, who offered new ways of reading Scripture to overcome Ferrara's historical and spiritual conflicts.

Establishing A Legitimate Expectation Of Privacy In Clickstream Data, Gavin Skok Jun 2000

Establishing A Legitimate Expectation Of Privacy In Clickstream Data, Gavin Skok

Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review

This Article argues that Web users should enjoy a legitimate expectation of privacy in clickstream data. Fourth Amendment jurisprudence as developed over the last half-century does not support an expectation of privacy. However, reference to the history of the Fourth Amendment and the intent of its drafters reveals that government investigation and monitoring of clickstream data is precisely the type of activity the Framers sought to limit. Courts must update outdated methods of expectation of privacy analysis to address the unique challenges posed by the Internet in order to fulfill the Amendment's purpose. Part I provides an overview of the …

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

For history to be truly understood more than reporting facts about past events must occur. The significance of events to people must also be described. Hence, our lead story "Early Beginnings in Outdoor Education" by Julie Carlson provides a good summary of outdoor education history. Her scholarly approach outlines the progress of the movement from 1930 to the present. Carlson's careful documentation furnishes good suggestions for those who would read more deeply.

Reviving The Public/Private Distinction In Feminist Theorizing, Tracy E. Higgins Jun 2000

Reviving The Public/Private Distinction In Feminist Theorizing, Tracy E. Higgins

Chicago-Kent Law Review

In this Essay, Higgins explores the various uses of the public/private distinction in feminist theorizing. She suggests that feminist attacks on the public/private line tend to overstate the threat that the concept poses to women's equality and to understate the potential value of the distinction in feminist theory. Acknowledging that, despite thoroughgoing theoretical critiques, the public/private line persists in practice, Higgins offers a qualified revival of the distinction in feminist theory and suggests ways of refocusing and refining it to respond to existing critiques.
