Affirmative Action And Implications For Effective Cultural Diversity Training, Jill L. Pittelkow Jun 2000

Affirmative Action And Implications For Effective Cultural Diversity Training, Jill L. Pittelkow

Theses and Graduate Projects

Diversity is an important factor in organizations today. As the workforce becomes more diverse in terms of gender, race, ethnicity, age, national origin, and other personal characteristics, employers are looking for ways to develop and manage the changes.

Beginning with Affirmative Action, several approaches have been used to both ensure equal opportunity and encourage diversity. This paper will examine Affirmative Action both historically and in recent times and identify various approaches to training. An emphasis will be made on determining the effectiveness of current training and methods and determining recommendations for leaders to develop cultural competence.

Portable Eyetracking: A Study Of Natural Eye Movements, Jeff B. Pelz, Roxanne Canosa, Diane Kucharczyk, Jason Babcock Jun 2000

Portable Eyetracking: A Study Of Natural Eye Movements, Jeff B. Pelz, Roxanne Canosa, Diane Kucharczyk, Jason Babcock

Presentations and other scholarship

Visual perception, operating below conscious awareness, effortlessly provides the experience of a rich representation of the environment, continuous in space and time. Conscious visual perception is made possible by the 'foveal compromise,' the combination of the high-acuity fovea and a sophisticated suite of eye movements. Our illusory visual experience cannot be understood by introspection, but monitoring eye movements lets us probe the processes of visual perception. Four tasks representing a wide range of complexity were used to explore visual perception; image quality judgments, map reading, model building, and hand-washing. Very short fixation durations were observed in all tasks, some as …

A Study To Determine Why Some Women Age Fifty And Over Choose Not To Have Frequent Papanicolaou Tests, Dorothy Hicks-Burchwell

Masters Theses

This discriptive study used the Health Belief Model to examine the benefits, barriers, and action cues to obtaining Papanicolaou tests perceived by women age 50 and older. A convenience sample of 48 women were interviewed. Comparisons were made between those who obtained Papanicolaou tests at least every three years (n = 24) and those who did not (n = 24)..

One cue to action and four perceived benefits were found to be important influences. Women who had received Papanicolaou tests less frequently than every three years agreed that certain barriers had influenced their decisions more than women who had received …

Anti-Ballistic Missile Defense Systems And Rhetorical Madness, Ibpp Editor

International Bulletin of Political Psychology

This article describes examples of political rhetoric on anti-ballistic missile defense systems from the two main presidential candidates in the United States. These examples may be undone by their consequential implications for military and politico-military deterrence and the development and proliferation of nuclear weapons even as they may garner success as campaign attack vehicles.

Cooking In Eden: Inventing Regional Cuisine In The Pacific Northwest, Amy Jo Woodruff Jun 2000

Cooking In Eden: Inventing Regional Cuisine In The Pacific Northwest, Amy Jo Woodruff

Dissertations and Theses

This study examines how regional cuisine is being self-consciously constructed in the Pacific Northwest and discusses the ways in which it contributes to identity in the region. I identify the characteristics--foods, dishes, and culinary practices--of this "new" Northwest cuisine, as well as social and cultural values associated with it, and explore how together they create a sense of regional distinctiveness and loyalty. Because this type of regional cuisine is closely associated with the professional cooking community, I look to restaurants in Portland, Oregon that self-identity as representative of the Pacific Northwest and to regional cookbooks, in order to pinpoint the …

Always The Same Old Story: How Urban Legends Develop And Spread In Modern America, Stephanie S. Gardner Jun 2000

Always The Same Old Story: How Urban Legends Develop And Spread In Modern America, Stephanie S. Gardner

Publications

This thesis is a study of the common themes shared by traditional folklore and modern American urban legends. The author consulted expert mythologists such as Carl Jung, Joseph Campbell and Marie-Louise von Franz to research the prevalent themes of fairy tales and fables. She identified archetypes and psychological motifs in stories from the past and present. They show that the themes of these stories explain human existence and are repeated in cultures around the world as a means of social control.

Qualitative Evaluation Of Data Compression In Real-Time Ultrasound Imaging, Bijoy J. Sundersingh

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

The purpose of this project was to evaluate qualitatively real-time ultrasound imaging using objective and subjective techniques to determine the minimum bandwidth required for clinical diagnosis of various anatomical and pathological states. In the experimental setup live ultrasound video samples representing the most common clinical examinations were compressed at 128, 256, 384, 768, 1152 and 1536 kbps using a compressor-decompressor (CODEC) adhering to International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T) recommendation H.261. A protocol for qualitative evaluation was developed and subjective and objective testing were performed based on this protocol. Subjective methods comprised of inter-rater reliability tests using kappa statistics and three way …
