Stress Management For Teachers In Vocational Education And Training Sector, Gloria, Ching Wah Chan

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference

Much of the stress of teaching is related to problem behaviour in the classrooms. The most effective way of managing behavioural problems is to prevent them from arising, and to minimize their occurrence. The focus is the teacher's ability and willingness to create a successful learning situation appropriate to the student's needs. Essentially, stress can be a challenging, exciting stimulus to personal growth, whilst excessive stress can prove damaging to psychological and physical health because it often triggers emotional and physical strain that may be harmful. So, people are motivated to cope with stress. However, the reactions to stress and …

Integrating The Strengths Of The Web-Based And Traditional Models Of Teaching, T.Y. Leung, Sarah Y.S. Tran

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference

The Internet has revolutionized the way we communicate and created new paradigms for innovation in education. This paper discusses the pedagogical issues conforming to constructivism that educators may consider in the delivery of instruction in post-secondary vocational education. The roles of both the students and teachers must be redefined in the new paradigm. An intellectually exciting learning experience can happen in a classroom, a laboratory or the cyberspace. The art of combining the strengths of classroom face-to-face teaching and Web-based self-directed instruction will be a challenge to educators. In addition to management support and a fair reward system as drivers …

Role Of Supported Services In The Provision Of Vocational Training For Open Employment To People With Disabilities In Hong Kong, Woon-Ching, Eliza Lo Chan

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference

The performance indicator for training for open employment is on how successfully the trainee is being employed in a job. Other than providing the job skills required which was always the emphasis in the vocational training, there are other issues, equally important, that should be addressed to prepare the trainees to enter into the competitive open job market. Independent and social skills should be strengthened through programmed activities. Attention should also be paid to minimize the mismatch between skills training and job opportunities to the trainees. Based on the provision in the skills centres for the people with disabilities aiming …

What Is Missing From Iso 9000 International Quality Standards Training In The United States?, Paul Krueger Aug 2000

What Is Missing From Iso 9000 International Quality Standards Training In The United States?, Paul Krueger

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference

Carnevale, Gainer and Villet (1991) observed that employers have too often used training approaches that failed to deliver “new knowledge in a context meaningful to the learner.” This conclusion was consistent with the results found in a recent study of 406 United States companies that used training to prepare their employees for registration to the ISO 9000 series of international quality assurance standards. The vast majority of companies failed to address employee learning needs, and used few research-based instructional strategies to enhance training transfer from workshop to shop floor. Companies rarely grouped employees by their ability to learn and infrequently …

Curriculum Development In Vocational Education: Achieving Balance And Coherence, Christopher Parkin

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference

In the era of lifelong learning, with the potential of new information technologies to facilitate learning and assessment, the need for curriculum balance and coherence is as important as ever. Lessons from the past should be applied to future development. Over specification of curriculum requirements must be avoided, alternative viewpoints of coherence accommodated, and continuity in development sought. Curriculum components should be in balance, with appropriate emphasis on valued learning experiences. Emphasis should be given to developing key skills in breadth and depth, and to a balance of accountability and flexibility. A template of interrelated key descriptors is suggested.

Education of statistical practitioners is specifically concerned with preparation for improving performance in applications of statistics in industries such as finance, manufacturing, etc.. This advocates learning problem solving skills which require practice in thinking about, implementing …

Telling Stories In The Use Of Portfolio Assessment In Higher Education: Some Implementation Issues, Annie Y.W Nicholson, Sharon Bryant, Judy W.F. Ng

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference

Evidence has shown that the results of traditional standardized tests characterized by pencil and paper formats, multiple-choice responses and time-restricted completion are not sufficient in telling how pupils engage in the learning process and their progress in learning. In addition, these tests tend to emphasize on the assessment of basic skills but fail to measure higher level thinking and problem solving skills. This inadequacy can be addressed by incorporating authentic assessment approaches such as performance tasks, portfolios, and grading for team effort. This paper aims to tell stories from an action learning research group whose members have used ‘portfolio’ as …

The Effects Of The Whole Educational Experience On Graduate Employability And Further Study, Michael John Pomfret

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference

A study of recent graduates was conducted in which their present status, campus life experiences, perceptions of their own performances in work or study, and suggestions on improving the curriculum design were explored. Altogether, 315 completed questionnaires were received and the result confirmed that students’ campus involvement positively but weakly correlated with their perceived performances in both working and studying environments after graduation. To enhance students’ involvement in attaining whole educational experience, group-based programmes involving peer activities are suggested.

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference

This paper aims at presenting the concept of Socratic interactions and discovery learning of classic electrical machines principles. The theories of electrical machines are by nature quite boring and abstract although there are a lot of experiments supported the theories. Traditional, students learnt the subject by drill and practice approach with standard textbooks. In the past two decades, computer is no doubt recognized to be the educational tool. The so-called “interactive” approach is applied to the learning process. Most of this approach applied to various subjects in different levels is mainly based on drill and practice. However, few packages are …

This study focuses on the effectiveness of using technology such as e-mail and websites in teaching and learning English. Around 50 in-depth interviews were made with teachers and students in the College to examine the effectiveness of using technology, such as e-mail, websites as teaching tools. Through such analysis, we can develop a better understanding on the students' and teachers' perception of their language abilities and effectiveness of using e-mail and websites for teaching. If there is a wide discrepancy between teachers and students' perception, it is better to equip our teachers with better understanding of the students' problems when …
