Why Did People Stop Committing Crimes? An Essay About Criminology And Ideology, George L. Kelling

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This essay considers the sharp decline in crime that was observed in 1994 in New York City and across the nation. The author suggests that crime reduction in various areas must be understood in a local context. This article discusses the steps New York City took prior to the observed crime reduction. The essay then discusses how urban renewal projects, weakening institutional control of youth behavior, and highly centralized facilities and strategies of law enforcement may have contributed to the violence of the 1980's. The author concludes that bad social policies contributed to elevated the crime rate and improvement of …

The Role Of Strategic Management Planning In Improving The Representation Of Clients: A Child Advocacy Example, Jane M. Spinak

Faculty Scholarship

This article will discuss my experience managing a legal organization representing children – the Juvenile Rights Division (JRD) that Schinitsky began thirty-eight years ago – by exploring the interactive role that organizational management plays in enhancing the quality of child client representation. Part I briefly examines two issues: the historic and systemic context of court-based practice within JRD and the way in which changes in child welfare law and policies since 1979 have affected the ability of lawyers to represent child clients through this court-based practice. Part II presents a model for restructuring organizational conventions and patterns in order to …

The Effects Of Government Funding On Non -Profit Organizational Behavior., Melissa Scott Flournoy Jan 2000

The Effects Of Government Funding On Non -Profit Organizational Behavior., Melissa Scott Flournoy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation addresses the problem of determining the effects of government funding on non-profit organizational behavior. The definition of a non-profit organization is a formal organization, privately incorporated but serving a public purpose, self-governing, voluntary to some degree and non-profit distributing (Salamon, 1993). The literature review demonstrates the increasing role of non-profit organizations as a means of social service delivery in the United States. As a result of policy changes and funding opportunities, non-profit organizations are increasingly providing services that were in the purview of government. The hypothesis for this study is that government funding positively affects the organizational behavior …

Can the PfP Military Contact Program objectives be executed through a reorganization of responsibilities (funding, selecting and scheduling of events and administrative processes) and still accomplish the mission/national strategies in a better manner? 2. Determine if the purpose of the PfP Military Contacts Program can be improved through reorganization, as it applies to its workings within the military command structure and the participating PfP countries.

A Decision Technology System To Advance The Diagnosis And Treatment Of Breast Cancer, Guisseppi A. Forgionne, Aryya Gangopadhyay, Monica Adya Jan 2000

A Decision Technology System To Advance The Diagnosis And Treatment Of Breast Cancer, Guisseppi A. Forgionne, Aryya Gangopadhyay, Monica Adya

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Geographical variations in cancer rates have been observed for decades. Described spatial patterns and trends have provided clues for generating hypotheses about the etiology of cancer. For breast cancer, investigators have demonstrated that some variation can be explained by differences in the population distribution of known breast cancer risk factors such as menstrual and reproductive variables (Laden, Spiegelman, and Neas, 1997; Robbins, Bescianini, and Kelsey, 1997; Sturgeon, Schairer, and Gail, 1995). However, regional patterns also may reflect the effects of Workshop on Hormones, Hormone Metabolism, Environment, and Breast Cancer (1995): (a) environmental hazards (such as air and water pollution), (b) …

An Ethical Exploration Of Gender Inequality In Church Leadership, Elizabeth Rickert Jan 2000

An Ethical Exploration Of Gender Inequality In Church Leadership, Elizabeth Rickert

Honors Theses

An Ethical Exploration of Gender Inequality in Church Leadership provides a moral analysis of the current status of women leaders in the church. Drawing on socio- analytical, ethical-theological, and leadership studies perspectives, this thesis sheds light on the disparity between the theological principles of equality and the ecclesiastical practices of inequality that create an unhealthy moral environment in churches.

Gender inequality in church leadership exists today in both the congregations permitting the ordination of women as well as in those that do not. This widespread discrepancy between rules and practices concerning women leaders in the church points to the socially …

The Clapham Sect : An Investigation Into The Effects Of Deep Faith In A Personal God On A Change Effort, Victoria Marple Jan 2000

The Clapham Sect : An Investigation Into The Effects Of Deep Faith In A Personal God On A Change Effort, Victoria Marple

Honors Theses

This study was undertaken primarily out of an apparent inability of leadership material to answer the question of "Why" in their studies of change efforts. Despite many scholarly materials on how societal alterations occurs and steps to make social action successful, little has been written regarding the internal influences on individuals involved in these efforts and on how these influences make the leader or group successful. This particular case study has been chosen because of its clear portrayal of various leadership theories including catalytic leadership, charismatic leadership and change theory. Moreover, writings about the Clapham Sect clearly evidence that the …

High School Career Academies: A Pathway To Education Reform In Urban School Districts?, Nan L. Maxwell, Victor Rubin

Upjohn Press

Maxwell and Rubin examine the capacity of career academies to address academic reform in terms of increased education and workplace skills. They accomplish this on two levels. First, they assess academies' development and implementation within an urban school district. Then they assess academies' potential to promote postsecondary success among academy students as compared to nonacademy students. Their findings will help educators and policymakers better understand the strengths and limitations of this method of reform.

Women Managers And Gendered Values, Diane Kay Sloan, Kathleen J. Krone Jan 2000

Women Managers And Gendered Values, Diane Kay Sloan, Kathleen J. Krone

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

In this study we interviewed 30 women managers to better understand ways in which they experience gendered values and behavior in organizational leadership and their responses to those experiences. The results, based on a constant comparison, thematic analysis, indicate the emergence of surprisingly strong and similar perceptions among the 30 women that there are distinct feminine and masculine power orientations in leadership communication with corresponding sets of gendered values: (a) open/closed and (b) supportive/intimidating. Their most common responses were: (a) rejection of masculine power, (b) self-doubt and blame, (c) competence, (d) confrontation, (e) isolation, and (f) resignation. These women judge …

Organizational Attachment: Exploring The Psychodynamics Of The Employment Relationship, Lynda St. Clair Jan 2000

Organizational Attachment: Exploring The Psychodynamics Of The Employment Relationship, Lynda St. Clair

Management Department Faculty Working Papers

This paper outlines a theoretical framework that may be useful for understanding how and why employees become psychologically attached to the organizations that employ them, in spite of growing evidence that many of these organizations are not reliable sources of security. Building on attachment theory from developmental psychology, I develop the concept of organizational attachment and distinguish between it and concepts of organizational commitment and organizational identification. Attachment theory suggests that individuals have attachment styles that reflect their beliefs and expectations about themselves in relation to the broader social system. I extend this theory and apply it to relationships between …
